00:00:06:17 00:00:08:10 >> I think local government 00:00:08:10 00:00:09:17 is what will impact them 00:00:09:17 00:00:10:27 the most in their daily lives 00:00:10:27 00:00:12:06 when they're adults. 00:00:12:06 00:00:13:12 And I think it's a part of 00:00:13:12 00:00:14:14 the curriculum that is 00:00:14:14 00:00:16:01 often missing. 00:00:16:01 00:00:17:00 I think current events 00:00:17:00 00:00:18:19 are really important. 00:00:18:19 00:00:19:27 And I didn't want current events 00:00:19:27 00:00:21:04 to be something that kids hate. 00:00:21:04 00:00:22:10 I wanted something that would 00:00:22:10 00:00:23:22 engage them, and they would go 00:00:23:22 00:00:24:21 out on their own and read 00:00:24:21 00:00:25:21 the paper, and things. 00:00:25:21 00:00:26:21 I think you have to, 00:00:26:21 00:00:27:23 on an emotional level, if you 00:00:27:23 00:00:28:25 can connect them a little bit, 00:00:28:25 00:00:30:24 that's helpful. 00:00:30:24 00:00:32:29 If you teach a controversy, 00:00:32:29 00:00:34:06 where you're giving multiple 00:00:34:06 00:00:35:20 perspectives on the issue, 00:00:35:20 00:00:37:13 that's an appropriate thing 00:00:37:13 00:00:38:17 to do. 00:00:38:17 00:00:39:17 All right, so today what 00:00:39:17 00:00:40:29 we're going to do, is 00:00:40:29 00:00:42:25 we're going to look at a lesson 00:00:42:25 00:00:44:11 about Native American mascots. 00:00:44:11 00:00:45:23 So what I want you guys to do, 00:00:45:23 00:00:46:20 is you can kind of see 00:00:46:20 00:00:48:23 these images. 00:00:48:23 00:00:49:24 What words or images 00:00:49:24 00:00:51:06 come to mind when viewing 00:00:51:06 00:00:53:11 the Indian mascot? 00:00:53:11 00:00:54:10 Any? 00:00:54:10 00:00:55:15 It's word association. 00:00:55:15 00:00:56:13 What do you think of 00:00:56:13 00:00:58:03 when you see these images? 00:00:58:03 00:00:59:01 I'll put them back. 00:00:59:01 00:01:00:26 Word association. 00:01:00:26 00:01:02:24 You have like two minutes. 00:01:02:24 00:01:04:19 >> I just think about 00:01:04:19 00:01:07:12 the stereotypes toward Indians. 00:01:07:12 00:01:09:01 >> Anthony, what did you think? 00:01:09:01 00:01:11:13 >> Team spirit. 00:01:11:13 00:01:13:10 >> Dances with Wolves, 00:01:13:10 00:01:14:13 with Kevin Costner. 00:01:14:13 00:01:15:16 (laughter) 00:01:15:16 00:01:16:15 >> Cowboys. 00:01:16:15 00:01:17:12 >> Indians. 00:01:17:12 00:01:18:14 >> Cowboys and Indians. 00:01:18:14 00:01:19:12 >> Baseball. 00:01:19:12 00:01:21:10 >> Baseball? Why baseball? 00:01:21:10 00:01:22:21 >> Because that's a mascot. 00:01:22:21 00:01:25:03 >> I think what's interesting 00:01:25:03 00:01:26:17 from your images and your words 00:01:26:17 00:01:28:07 is that some of you had negative 00:01:28:07 00:01:29:20 images, and some of you had 00:01:29:20 00:01:31:09 positive images, which is 00:01:31:09 00:01:32:11 interesting, because our issue 00:01:32:11 00:01:33:25 today raises a lot 00:01:33:25 00:01:36:02 of emotional issues, 00:01:36:02 00:01:37:20 some on the positive side 00:01:37:20 00:01:40:06 and some on the negative side. 00:01:40:06 00:01:41:13 So what we're going to look at 00:01:41:13 00:01:44:09 today, and our question is, 00:01:44:09 00:01:46:02 should Wisconsin ban the use 00:01:46:02 00:01:47:23 of Indian mascots and logos 00:01:47:23 00:01:49:24 in their public schools? 00:01:49:24 00:01:50:29 I had divided them from the 00:01:50:29 00:01:53:06 groups of four into partners. 00:01:53:06 00:01:54:18 And they have to talk about what 00:01:54:18 00:01:55:27 they thought two good arguments 00:01:55:27 00:01:57:10 were that they already heard. 00:01:57:10 00:01:58:24 And then, my goal on this lesson 00:01:58:24 00:02:00:02 was for them to find 00:02:00:02 00:02:01:09 one additional new argument 00:02:01:09 00:02:02:20 to support that side. 00:02:02:20 00:02:03:25 And I'm going to put you 00:02:03:25 00:02:05:18 in groups of four, okay. 00:02:05:18 00:02:06:19 So that's the group 00:02:06:19 00:02:07:17 you're going to be working 00:02:07:17 00:02:08:22 on this issue with. 00:02:08:22 00:02:09:24 From the four, you're going 00:02:09:24 00:02:11:08 to break into pairs. 00:02:11:08 00:02:12:14 Two are going to support 00:02:12:14 00:02:14:03 and two are going to oppose 00:02:14:03 00:02:15:25 the issue of mascots. 00:02:15:25 00:02:17:11 Once they learn about an issue, 00:02:17:11 00:02:18:18 they become more engaged. 00:02:18:18 00:02:20:05 And what I found is that 00:02:20:05 00:02:21:18 a variety of different issues 00:02:21:18 00:02:22:27 engage different kids, 00:02:22:27 00:02:24:08 so you have to provide 00:02:24:08 00:02:25:14 a variety of issues, because 00:02:25:14 00:02:26:14 some will engage some students 00:02:26:14 00:02:28:05 and some will engage others. 00:02:28:05 00:02:30:00 To start with, though, 00:02:30:00 00:02:31:11 I thought I'd provide to you 00:02:31:11 00:02:33:23 a variety of information. 00:02:33:23 00:02:34:26 So I'm going to show you, 00:02:34:26 00:02:37:00 actually, two video clips. 00:02:37:00 00:02:38:04 And you're going to find 00:02:38:04 00:02:39:23 arguments, both to support 00:02:39:23 00:02:42:04 the yes and the no argument. 00:02:47:13 00:02:48:19 So I think what I'd do is just 00:02:48:19 00:02:50:06 jot down a few words or images 00:02:50:06 00:02:51:05 about some of the arguments 00:02:51:05 00:02:52:03 you heard, 00:02:52:03 00:02:53:03 while you remember them. 00:02:53:03 00:02:54:03 And you can expand on them 00:02:54:03 00:02:55:03 before I show you 00:02:55:03 00:02:57:22 the other videotape. 00:02:57:22 00:02:59:00 >> And so, when the Chief 00:02:59:00 00:03:00:12 stepped foot on the court 00:03:00:12 00:03:01:25 one last time, it seemed as if 00:03:01:25 00:03:03:02 the fans knew that they were 00:03:03:02 00:03:04:27 witnessing something historic, 00:03:04:27 00:03:07:00 the end of a controversial era. 00:03:07:00 00:03:09:29 The Chief's last dance. 00:03:09:29 00:03:11:03 >> Students can bring 00:03:11:03 00:03:12:06 the awareness to me. 00:03:12:06 00:03:13:01 They might have an issue 00:03:13:01 00:03:14:03 or concern 00:03:14:03 00:03:15:08 that they want to talk about. 00:03:15:08 00:03:16:21 I look in the paper. 00:03:16:21 00:03:17:26 I watch the news. 00:03:17:26 00:03:19:14 I like to think 00:03:19:14 00:03:20:29 I'm an engaged citizen. 00:03:20:29 00:03:22:11 So, I can bring some awareness 00:03:22:11 00:03:23:17 to them about what's going on 00:03:23:17 00:03:24:27 in the world. 00:03:24:27 00:03:27:00 And if I'm engaged, 00:03:27:00 00:03:29:02 their parents might be engaged. 00:03:29:02 00:03:30:16 It's kind of an interesting 00:03:30:16 00:03:31:26 marriage between what 00:03:31:26 00:03:33:00 the kids are interested in and 00:03:33:00 00:03:34:16 what's going on in the world. 00:03:34:16 00:03:35:20 Find as many arguments 00:03:35:20 00:03:37:07 as you can, okay? 00:03:37:07 00:03:38:16 Write them in your notes 00:03:38:16 00:03:39:17 and then you and your partner 00:03:39:17 00:03:40:17 will discuss what you think 00:03:40:17 00:03:42:16 are the top four. 00:03:42:16 00:03:43:23 >> So, we're supposed to like, 00:03:43:23 00:03:44:29 skim these and? 00:03:44:29 00:03:46:10 >> Yeah. 00:03:46:10 00:03:47:06 >> Those who want 00:03:47:06 00:03:48:08 the name changed 00:03:48:08 00:03:49:22 would like it changed to what? 00:03:49:22 00:03:50:27 The Pussy Cats 00:03:50:27 00:03:53:08 or the Fighting Librarians? 00:03:53:08 00:03:54:11 You don't name your own team 00:03:54:11 00:03:55:15 after someone or something 00:03:55:15 00:03:56:20 you don't respect. 00:03:56:20 00:03:57:26 >> They had me 00:03:57:26 00:03:59:16 for like the first paragraph. 00:03:59:16 00:04:02:06 After that, it was ridiculous. 00:04:02:06 00:04:03:12 It's like you could name it 00:04:03:12 00:04:05:16 a bunch of other stuff. 00:04:05:16 00:04:06:20 >> It may be a violation 00:04:06:20 00:04:08:10 of civil rights, it says. 00:04:08:10 00:04:09:23 >> I think when 00:04:09:23 00:04:12:03 a teacher comes to the table, 00:04:12:03 00:04:14:17 you always have biases. 00:04:14:17 00:04:16:13 By providing multiple 00:04:16:13 00:04:19:00 perspectives in the classroom 00:04:19:00 00:04:20:08 and when leading the discussion, 00:04:20:08 00:04:21:24 not saying, "Really, 00:04:21:24 00:04:24:11 that's your position?" 00:04:24:11 00:04:25:21 You know, I want to make it 00:04:25:21 00:04:27:00 feel like they can have 00:04:27:00 00:04:28:11 the perspective they want, 00:04:28:11 00:04:30:21 just support it with evidence, 00:04:30:21 00:04:31:29 and teach good arguing skills, 00:04:31:29 00:04:33:21 but not tell them how 00:04:33:21 00:04:36:01 they have to think or believe. 00:04:36:01 00:04:37:05 I heard you over there say, 00:04:37:05 00:04:38:05 "I already have opinions, 00:04:38:05 00:04:39:03 I don't need to write 00:04:39:03 00:04:40:02 stuff down." 00:04:40:02 00:04:40:29 See if there are other arguments 00:04:40:29 00:04:42:13 that help support your position 00:04:42:13 00:04:43:20 on this. 00:04:43:20 00:04:44:29 >> They want to keep it around, 00:04:44:29 00:04:46:24 because it means something 00:04:46:24 00:04:48:04 to the students, and just like, 00:04:48:04 00:04:49:09 it makes the school 00:04:49:09 00:04:50:09 a better place. 00:04:50:09 00:04:51:08 If they got rid of the mascot, 00:04:51:08 00:04:52:12 I think the school 00:04:52:12 00:04:53:14 would just get worse. 00:04:53:14 00:04:54:20 >> On the issue, I'm just hoping 00:04:54:20 00:04:55:28 that they can have 00:04:55:28 00:04:57:02 a broader understanding 00:04:57:02 00:04:58:01 of the controversy, why it's 00:04:58:01 00:05:00:04 a controversy, and perhaps 00:05:00:04 00:05:01:09 why people are pretty emotional 00:05:01:09 00:05:02:28 about it. 00:05:02:28 00:05:03:28 >> All they're saying 00:05:03:28 00:05:05:02 is that they want to honor the 00:05:05:02 00:05:07:06 Native Americans, and not like, 00:05:07:06 00:05:08:15 discriminate them. 00:05:08:15 00:05:09:21 They're not trying 00:05:09:21 00:05:11:17 to take them down. 00:05:11:17 00:05:12:26 >> I think, to be an engaged 00:05:12:26 00:05:14:05 and active citizen is a really 00:05:14:05 00:05:15:09 important goal of a government 00:05:15:09 00:05:17:06 and a social studies curriculum. 00:05:17:06 00:05:18:14 That was why I hadn't 00:05:18:14 00:05:20:21 jumped to the activism part. 00:05:20:21 00:05:21:23 Because I knew that they weren't 00:05:21:23 00:05:23:25 ready to go there yet. 00:05:23:25 00:05:25:11 I wanted them to keep exploring 00:05:25:11 00:05:26:24 the two sides of the issue. 00:05:26:24 00:05:28:01 And I thought it was interesting 00:05:28:01 00:05:29:18 that at the end they were 00:05:29:18 00:05:31:06 actually addressing one another. 00:05:31:06 00:05:32:12 That's one of the big goals 00:05:32:12 00:05:33:19 of my discussion. 00:05:33:19 00:05:34:27 It's not me that they have to 00:05:34:27 00:05:36:03 direct all their comments to. 00:05:36:03 00:05:37:05 They should be talking 00:05:37:05 00:05:38:04 to one another, 00:05:38:04 00:05:39:12 and addressing themselves. 00:05:39:12 00:05:40:24 >> There's other mascots 00:05:40:24 00:05:42:04 that are for like Irish people, 00:05:42:04 00:05:43:05 and stuff like that. 00:05:43:05 00:05:44:00 It's not like 00:05:44:00 00:05:45:03 they're getting offended. 00:05:45:03 00:05:46:02 But I think 00:05:46:02 00:05:47:16 they take it differently, 00:05:47:16 00:05:49:07 because of the past history. 00:05:49:07 00:05:50:15 >> I'm looking at all of these 00:05:50:15 00:05:51:19 in Wisconsin. 00:05:51:19 00:05:52:28 It is such a big part of 00:05:52:28 00:05:54:13 our culture, because of all the 00:05:54:13 00:05:56:01 Indian tribes that were here. 00:05:56:01 00:05:57:10 It's been part of our history. 00:05:57:10 00:05:58:14 It's an important thing 00:05:58:14 00:06:00:14 to be representing. 00:06:00:14 00:06:01:15 >> He's in the school district 00:06:01:15 00:06:02:17 right next door. 00:06:02:17 00:06:03:20 He's arguing that they shouldn't 00:06:03:20 00:06:04:21 have their Native American 00:06:04:21 00:06:06:02 mascot. 00:06:06:02 00:06:08:17 >> Okay, 81%. 00:06:08:17 00:06:10:20 >> 81% of Americans said that 00:06:10:20 00:06:12:16 they shouldn't use mascots 00:06:12:16 00:06:13:27 for high school and college. 00:06:13:27 00:06:17:07 And 83% said no for pro teams. 00:06:17:07 00:06:18:17 >> It kind of seems like 00:06:18:17 00:06:20:11 most of them are saying no 00:06:20:11 00:06:21:25 for anything at all. 00:06:21:25 00:06:23:08 Native Americans are like, 00:06:23:08 00:06:24:23 they don't want it, because 00:06:24:23 00:06:26:26 the way they're using it now 00:06:26:26 00:06:28:19 is derogatory. 00:06:28:19 00:06:30:21 >> So, what from the video, 00:06:30:21 00:06:33:03 what from this do you think are 00:06:33:03 00:06:34:14 the most compelling arguments? 00:06:34:14 00:06:35:14 You don't have to agree with 00:06:35:14 00:06:36:13 them, but just the arguments 00:06:36:13 00:06:37:17 that you think 00:06:37:17 00:06:38:15 are the most compelling. 00:06:38:15 00:06:39:18 Think about once you have 00:06:39:18 00:06:40:23 four really good arguments, 00:06:40:23 00:06:41:23 you're going to team up with 00:06:41:23 00:06:42:23 them and share what arguments 00:06:42:23 00:06:44:02 you came up with. 00:06:44:02 00:06:45:08 >> If they want them banned, 00:06:45:08 00:06:46:22 they should be able to like, 00:06:46:22 00:06:48:03 have the opinion of banning 00:06:48:03 00:06:49:13 them, because like, 00:06:49:13 00:06:50:16 I'm not Native American. 00:06:50:16 00:06:51:16 Sam and I 00:06:51:16 00:06:52:18 both talked about this. 00:06:52:18 00:06:53:26 >> Yeah. 00:06:53:26 00:06:55:03 >> We're not Native Americans. 00:06:55:03 00:06:56:15 >> People use them, like 00:06:56:15 00:06:57:23 an Indian as their mascot, 00:06:57:23 00:06:58:25 because they thought 00:06:58:25 00:07:00:17 that it showed their opposition 00:07:00:17 00:07:02:08 that they were fierce, 00:07:02:08 00:07:03:20 and they were ready to win. 00:07:03:20 00:07:06:02 >> Our first argument was that 00:07:06:02 00:07:08:23 having Indians as a mascot 00:07:08:23 00:07:10:07 is not trying to demoralize 00:07:10:07 00:07:12:09 Native Americans. 00:07:12:09 00:07:13:15 It's more of an honor 00:07:13:15 00:07:15:18 for the Native Americans. 00:07:15:18 00:07:17:22 >> For ours, we said 00:07:17:22 00:07:20:00 it was disrespectful 00:07:20:00 00:07:21:21 to the Indian beliefs. 00:07:21:21 00:07:23:16 Mostly because it's like being 00:07:23:16 00:07:27:23 like they're wanting to fight. 00:07:27:23 00:07:29:14 >> We don't have, like, 00:07:29:14 00:07:31:24 Mexicans as mascots, 00:07:31:24 00:07:33:25 or black people as your mascots. 00:07:33:25 00:07:35:09 We're people, and we're all 00:07:35:09 00:07:36:17 the same, so I don't think 00:07:36:17 00:07:37:24 we should use people 00:07:37:24 00:07:39:21 as our mascots. 00:07:39:21 00:07:40:25 >> The lesson was done 00:07:40:25 00:07:43:09 in two days. 00:07:46:18 00:07:47:24 So I want you 00:07:47:24 00:07:48:23 to switch positions. 00:07:48:23 00:07:49:22 Find and talk about what 00:07:49:22 00:07:50:20 you think the two best ones 00:07:50:20 00:07:51:20 are that you've already heard. 00:07:51:20 00:07:53:09 Try to come up with a new one. 00:07:53:09 00:07:54:25 Then I want you to come back 00:07:54:25 00:07:56:18 together as a group of four, 00:07:56:18 00:07:57:23 share your arguments 00:07:57:23 00:07:59:07 that you thought were the best. 00:07:59:07 00:08:00:20 And then I have a ten-minute 00:08:00:20 00:08:02:06 video to show you, to further 00:08:02:06 00:08:03:27 enhance your understanding 00:08:03:27 00:08:05:07 of the issue. 00:08:05:07 00:08:07:20 Yeah, I think video, pictures, 00:08:07:20 00:08:10:08 any sort of technology 00:08:10:08 00:08:11:08 is important. 00:08:11:08 00:08:12:09 Kids are used to that. 00:08:12:09 00:08:13:09 They see all these images 00:08:13:09 00:08:14:04 all day. 00:08:14:04 00:08:15:18 They do those sorts of things. 00:08:15:18 00:08:16:28 So, to be able to bring that 00:08:16:28 00:08:18:00 into the classroom, 00:08:18:00 00:08:19:20 that's part of the engagement, 00:08:19:20 00:08:22:12 to have a variety of ways 00:08:22:12 00:08:24:08 for them to take in information. 00:08:24:08 00:08:25:21 >> People who don't know 00:08:25:21 00:08:27:23 as much may not be as careful 00:08:27:23 00:08:29:13 how to use it. 00:08:29:13 00:08:31:28 >> Okay, so what if you had 00:08:31:28 00:08:34:01 a friend who was Native American 00:08:34:01 00:08:35:27 and he or she found it 00:08:35:27 00:08:37:25 offensive? 00:08:37:25 00:08:39:09 >> I'm confused. 00:08:39:09 00:08:41:05 The yes side, I think, can say 00:08:41:05 00:08:42:28 that they should be banned, 00:08:42:28 00:08:45:21 just 'cause they're racist. 00:08:45:21 00:08:47:18 But then, the only thing 00:08:47:18 00:08:49:15 I agree with on the other side, 00:08:49:15 00:08:50:28 is that they show, like, bravery 00:08:50:28 00:08:52:15 and power, and stuff, 00:08:52:15 00:08:54:00 so it's kind of respectful. 00:08:54:00 00:08:55:20 >> But you know, in the same way 00:08:55:20 00:08:57:14 you're showing the bravery 00:08:57:14 00:08:59:04 and power, you're kind of 00:08:59:04 00:09:01:09 showing silliness. 00:09:01:09 00:09:02:22 >> But like for the other side, 00:09:02:22 00:09:04:12 they show respect. 00:09:04:12 00:09:06:18 So, I'm really confused. 00:09:06:18 00:09:07:29 >> It's nice that 00:09:07:29 00:09:09:23 they're choosing Indians 00:09:09:23 00:09:11:16 to portray what's respectful. 00:09:11:16 00:09:12:25 What's disrespectful is how 00:09:12:25 00:09:15:11 they portray them, you know? 00:09:15:11 00:09:16:22 >> Most people that are racist 00:09:16:22 00:09:18:02 aren't people that you think 00:09:18:02 00:09:19:16 would be. 00:09:19:16 00:09:20:16 >> Yeah. 00:09:20:16 00:09:21:13 >> I thought that was, that 00:09:21:13 00:09:23:02 they used the resources well. 00:09:23:02 00:09:24:20 >> We looked at this map 00:09:24:20 00:09:26:27 and saw that most of the schools 00:09:26:27 00:09:28:13 that have Indians as mascots 00:09:28:13 00:09:29:29 are in southern 00:09:29:29 00:09:32:06 and eastern Wisconsin, 00:09:32:06 00:09:34:10 whereas all the tribes and that 00:09:34:10 00:09:35:22 kind of thing, the reservations, 00:09:35:22 00:09:38:08 are in northern. 00:09:38:08 00:09:39:22 So, we weren't sure 00:09:39:22 00:09:40:28 what that meant at first. 00:09:40:28 00:09:42:14 But we came to the conclusion 00:09:42:14 00:09:43:24 that the people that don't know 00:09:43:24 00:09:46:02 as much may not be as careful 00:09:46:02 00:09:47:20 to how they use it, 00:09:47:20 00:09:49:15 how that may affect people. 00:09:49:15 00:09:50:17 >> I think it'd be 00:09:50:17 00:09:52:13 more respectful. 00:09:52:13 00:09:54:20 Like, we're using it. 00:09:54:20 00:09:55:27 >> Showing respect. 00:09:55:27 00:09:57:10 >> Like in here, 00:09:57:10 00:09:58:27 they're saying how like, 00:09:58:27 00:10:00:12 they got the information wrong. 00:10:00:12 00:10:01:17 And they're saying that this 00:10:01:17 00:10:03:02 one mascot was this chief, but 00:10:03:02 00:10:05:10 in reality, he wasn't actually. 00:10:05:10 00:10:06:23 >> It does impact your children. 00:10:06:23 00:10:07:26 That's what this American 00:10:07:26 00:10:09:11 Psychological Association found. 00:10:09:11 00:10:11:14 I'm saying that because they're 00:10:11:14 00:10:14:02 using Indians as mascots, 00:10:14:02 00:10:16:06 the only reason people 00:10:16:06 00:10:17:12 are getting upset 00:10:17:12 00:10:18:11 is because of the past history 00:10:18:11 00:10:20:21 that America has had with them. 00:10:20:21 00:10:21:26 >> I have a video. 00:10:21:26 00:10:23:17 It's about ten minutes long. 00:10:23:17 00:10:24:29 It's going to talk 00:10:24:29 00:10:26:02 about this issue. 00:10:26:02 00:10:27:04 And what this issue does, 00:10:27:04 00:10:28:11 is it brings it now, 00:10:28:11 00:10:29:21 down to Wisconsin's level, 00:10:29:21 00:10:31:09 at our state level. 00:10:31:09 00:10:32:20 So, you're going to meet some 00:10:32:20 00:10:35:02 kids from Prescott, Wisconsin. 00:10:35:02 00:10:36:11 They do not have an Indian 00:10:36:11 00:10:37:24 mascot, but a number of schools 00:10:37:24 00:10:39:12 in their conference do. 00:10:39:12 00:10:41:00 They are looking more broadly. 00:10:41:00 00:10:42:07 Now, we're kind of narrowing 00:10:42:07 00:10:43:17 the issue a little bit, 00:10:43:17 00:10:44:27 and they can see kids their age 00:10:44:27 00:10:46:03 and what they felt 00:10:46:03 00:10:47:28 about the issue. 00:10:49:21 00:10:50:27 >> Being non-Indian people, 00:10:50:27 00:10:51:26 there's a lot of people 00:10:51:26 00:10:52:22 who would say, 00:10:52:22 00:10:54:09 "Why do you care?" 00:10:54:09 00:10:55:10 Why should you care 00:10:55:10 00:10:57:04 about an issue like this? 00:10:57:04 00:10:58:08 >> We had to write an essay 00:10:58:08 00:10:59:14 on our opinion, about do you 00:10:59:14 00:11:00:21 think Native American mascots 00:11:00:21 00:11:02:12 are offensive. 00:11:02:12 00:11:03:14 >> It hurts the self-esteem 00:11:03:14 00:11:04:24 of Native Americans. 00:11:04:24 00:11:06:08 >> It hits close to home, 00:11:06:08 00:11:07:23 because we have a bunch 00:11:07:23 00:11:08:29 of schools in our area 00:11:08:29 00:11:10:23 that do have Indian mascots. 00:11:10:23 00:11:12:13 I know Native Americans, 00:11:12:13 00:11:13:20 hearing them say, 00:11:13:20 00:11:16:02 "That's very offensive to me," 00:11:16:02 00:11:19:24 made way more of an impact. 00:11:19:24 00:11:20:29 >> How many of you, 00:11:20:29 00:11:22:05 raise your hand, if you have an 00:11:22:05 00:11:24:04 opinion on this issue right now? 00:11:24:04 00:11:25:22 Okay. 00:11:25:22 00:11:27:20 How many of you are still 00:11:27:20 00:11:31:01 forming your opinion right now? 00:11:31:01 00:11:32:09 Okay, all right. 00:11:32:09 00:11:33:16 This is kind of interesting. 00:11:33:16 00:11:35:10 So, I'm going to open it up now, 00:11:35:10 00:11:36:21 and let's address our question. 00:11:36:21 00:11:39:02 And our question is, 00:11:39:02 00:11:41:03 should Wisconsin ban the use 00:11:41:03 00:11:43:18 of American Indian mascot logos 00:11:43:18 00:11:46:13 in their public schools? 00:11:46:13 00:11:47:20 In the discussion that we had 00:11:47:20 00:11:50:04 today, it started a little slow. 00:11:50:04 00:11:52:08 And so, just allowing students, 00:11:52:08 00:11:54:07 kind of that space, 00:11:54:07 00:11:55:25 to kind of think about it. 00:11:55:25 00:11:57:15 >> I think because 00:11:57:15 00:11:59:13 it'll affect a lot of people, 00:11:59:13 00:12:01:18 I think it should be voted on 00:12:01:18 00:12:03:01 by the people, instead of 00:12:03:01 00:12:05:16 the elected, the committee. 00:12:05:16 00:12:06:24 >> What do you mean? 00:12:06:24 00:12:08:04 >> It should be on the ballot. 00:12:08:04 00:12:09:04 >> Oh, so you think this should 00:12:09:04 00:12:10:10 be a referendum question 00:12:10:10 00:12:11:27 for everyone to weigh in on. 00:12:11:27 00:12:13:02 >> Yeah. 00:12:13:02 00:12:14:06 >> I think you need to 00:12:14:06 00:12:15:05 look at how the mascot 00:12:15:05 00:12:16:15 is being depicted, like, 00:12:16:15 00:12:18:24 Cleveland's baseball mascot, 00:12:18:24 00:12:20:24 I mean, that's pretty bad. 00:12:20:24 00:12:22:16 But otherwise, there are some 00:12:22:16 00:12:24:11 that it's just an arrow 00:12:24:11 00:12:25:25 with a feather. 00:12:25:25 00:12:27:14 >> But it does show honor, that 00:12:27:14 00:12:29:23 they chose Native Americans, 00:12:29:23 00:12:31:15 you know, to be their mascot. 00:12:31:15 00:12:33:00 But what the dishonor is, 00:12:33:00 00:12:34:21 is how they portray them, 00:12:34:21 00:12:35:26 like with the dances 00:12:35:26 00:12:37:09 and the tomahawk chop, 00:12:37:09 00:12:39:14 and stuff like that. 00:12:39:14 00:12:41:06 Like, with the dances 00:12:41:06 00:12:42:18 and the war cries, too. 00:12:42:18 00:12:43:19 Native Americans, 00:12:43:19 00:12:44:23 when they do those things, 00:12:44:23 00:12:45:26 it means something. 00:12:45:26 00:12:47:26 And for them, it's just like, 00:12:47:26 00:12:49:00 just doing it. 00:12:49:00 00:12:50:03 They don't know 00:12:50:03 00:12:51:16 what they're doing. 00:12:51:16 00:12:53:06 >> If people, if they're not 00:12:53:06 00:12:54:13 okay with all the dancing, 00:12:54:13 00:12:55:12 and stuff, then they 00:12:55:12 00:12:56:12 probably shouldn't be using 00:12:56:12 00:12:57:16 their mascots. 00:12:57:16 00:12:58:15 Because the purpose 00:12:58:15 00:13:00:14 that we have them for 00:13:00:14 00:13:01:16 is to get everybody going. 00:13:01:16 00:13:02:17 So, I don't know if it's 00:13:02:17 00:13:03:20 necessarily that we're being 00:13:03:20 00:13:04:25 disrespectful to their culture, 00:13:04:25 00:13:06:22 or if we're just doing what 00:13:06:22 00:13:08:11 the whole purpose, in our minds, 00:13:08:11 00:13:10:05 of what a mascot is. 00:13:10:05 00:13:11:12 >> Okay, so what I'm hearing 00:13:11:12 00:13:12:22 you say, Sarah, is that 00:13:12:22 00:13:13:24 you're having trouble, 00:13:13:24 00:13:15:01 where do you draw the line. 00:13:15:01 00:13:16:00 >> Yeah. 00:13:16:00 00:13:17:00 >> It's hard to draw that line 00:13:17:00 00:13:18:01 a little bit. 00:13:18:01 00:13:19:10 Interesting. 00:13:19:10 00:13:21:08 >> I think we should ask, 00:13:21:08 00:13:22:29 like in that article, 00:13:22:29 00:13:24:15 the actual Native Americans, 00:13:24:15 00:13:25:22 and see what they think. 00:13:25:22 00:13:27:02 And if they don't mind it, 00:13:27:02 00:13:28:13 it shouldn't be changed 00:13:28:13 00:13:29:21 because it's not offending 00:13:29:21 00:13:31:07 many people at all. 00:13:31:07 00:13:32:11 >> There's always going to be 00:13:32:11 00:13:33:13 people that don't agree, 00:13:33:13 00:13:34:11 so you might as well 00:13:34:11 00:13:36:02 just kind of play it safe. 00:13:36:02 00:13:37:04 >> But if we do what Morgan 00:13:37:04 00:13:38:06 says, then we're going to have 00:13:38:06 00:13:39:22 to try and please everyone. 00:13:39:22 00:13:41:23 And like, you can't do that, 00:13:41:23 00:13:42:26 because someone is always going 00:13:42:26 00:13:44:19 to be offended by something, 00:13:44:19 00:13:46:21 or not like something else. 00:13:46:21 00:13:48:14 >> All right, thank you guys. 00:13:48:14 00:13:49:15 You can leave the desks 00:13:49:15 00:13:50:16 how they are. 00:13:50:16 00:13:51:24 I'll fix them. 00:13:51:24 00:13:53:07 Over all, I was pleased with how 00:13:53:07 00:13:54:27 they engaged with the materials, 00:13:54:27 00:13:56:06 how they talked to one another, 00:13:56:06 00:13:57:20 and I thought 00:13:57:20 00:13:59:13 they did pretty well. 00:14:08:03 00:14:09:19 >> For more information, 00:14:09:19 00:14:11:05 visit us on the Web at: 00:14:11:05 00:14:15:13 ecb.org/engage
