00:00:00:00 00:00:01:18 >> I think local government 00:00:01:18 00:00:02:25 is what will impact them 00:00:02:25 00:00:04:05 the most in their daily lives 00:00:04:05 00:00:05:14 when they're adults. 00:00:05:14 00:00:06:20 And I think it's a part of 00:00:06:20 00:00:07:22 the curriculum that is 00:00:07:22 00:00:09:09 often missing. 00:00:09:09 00:00:10:08 I think current events 00:00:10:08 00:00:11:27 are really important. 00:00:11:27 00:00:13:05 And I didn't want current events 00:00:13:05 00:00:14:12 to be something that kids hate. 00:00:14:12 00:00:15:18 I wanted something that would 00:00:15:18 00:00:17:00 engage them, and they would go 00:00:17:00 00:00:17:29 out on their own and read 00:00:17:29 00:00:18:29 the paper, and things. 00:00:18:29 00:00:19:29 I think you have to, 00:00:19:29 00:00:21:01 on an emotional level, if you 00:00:21:01 00:00:22:03 can connect them a little bit, 00:00:22:03 00:00:24:02 that's helpful. 00:00:24:02 00:00:26:07 If you teach a controversy, 00:00:26:07 00:00:27:14 where you're giving multiple 00:00:27:14 00:00:28:28 perspectives on the issue, 00:00:28:28 00:00:30:21 that's an appropriate thing 00:00:30:21 00:00:31:25 to do. 00:00:31:25 00:00:32:25 All right, so today what 00:00:32:25 00:00:34:07 we're going to do, is 00:00:34:07 00:00:36:03 we're going to look at a lesson 00:00:36:03 00:00:37:19 about Native American mascots. 00:00:37:19 00:00:39:01 So what I want you guys to do, 00:00:39:01 00:00:39:28 is you can kind of see 00:00:39:28 00:00:42:01 these images. 00:00:42:01 00:00:43:02 What words or images 00:00:43:02 00:00:44:14 come to mind when viewing 00:00:44:14 00:00:46:19 the Indian mascot? 00:00:46:19 00:00:47:18 Any? 00:00:47:18 00:00:48:23 It's word association. 00:00:48:23 00:00:49:21 What do you think of 00:00:49:21 00:00:51:11 when you see these images? 00:00:51:11 00:00:52:09 I'll put them back. 00:00:52:09 00:00:54:02 Word association. 00:00:54:02 00:00:56:00 You have like two minutes. 00:00:56:00 00:00:57:25 >> I just think about 00:00:57:25 00:01:00:20 the stereotypes toward Indians. 00:01:00:20 00:01:02:09 >> Anthony, what did you think? 00:01:02:09 00:01:04:21 >> Team spirit. 00:01:04:21 00:01:06:18 >> Dances with Wolves, 00:01:06:18 00:01:07:21 with Kevin Costner. 00:01:07:21 00:01:08:24 (laughter) 00:01:08:24 00:01:09:23 >> Cowboys. 00:01:09:23 00:01:10:20 >> Indians. 00:01:10:20 00:01:11:22 >> Cowboys and Indians. 00:01:11:22 00:01:12:20 >> Baseball. 00:01:12:20 00:01:14:18 >> Baseball? Why baseball? 00:01:14:18 00:01:15:29 >> Because that's a mascot. 00:01:15:29 00:01:18:11 >> I think what's interesting 00:01:18:11 00:01:19:25 from your images and your words 00:01:19:25 00:01:21:15 is that some of you had negative 00:01:21:15 00:01:22:28 images, and some of you had 00:01:22:28 00:01:24:17 positive images, which is 00:01:24:17 00:01:25:19 interesting, because our issue 00:01:25:19 00:01:27:03 today raises a lot 00:01:27:03 00:01:29:10 of emotional issues, 00:01:29:10 00:01:30:28 some on the positive side 00:01:30:28 00:01:33:14 and some on the negative side. 00:01:33:14 00:01:34:21 So what we're going to look at 00:01:34:21 00:01:37:17 today, and our question is, 00:01:37:17 00:01:39:10 should Wisconsin ban the use 00:01:39:10 00:01:41:01 of Indian mascots and logos 00:01:41:01 00:01:43:02 in their public schools? 00:01:43:02 00:01:44:07 I had divided them from the 00:01:44:07 00:01:46:14 groups of four into partners. 00:01:46:14 00:01:47:26 And they have to talk about what 00:01:47:26 00:01:49:05 they thought two good arguments 00:01:49:05 00:01:50:18 were that they already heard. 00:01:50:18 00:01:52:02 And then, my goal on this lesson 00:01:52:02 00:01:53:08 was for them to find 00:01:53:08 00:01:54:15 one additional new argument 00:01:54:15 00:01:55:26 to support that side. 00:01:55:26 00:01:57:01 And I'm going to put you 00:01:57:01 00:01:58:24 in groups of four, okay. 00:01:58:24 00:01:59:25 So that's the group 00:01:59:25 00:02:00:25 you're going to be working 00:02:00:25 00:02:02:00 on this issue with. 00:02:02:00 00:02:03:02 From the four, you're going 00:02:03:02 00:02:04:16 to break into pairs. 00:02:04:16 00:02:05:22 Two are going to support 00:02:05:22 00:02:07:11 and two are going to oppose 00:02:07:11 00:02:09:03 the issue of mascots. 00:02:09:03 00:02:10:19 Once they learn about an issue, 00:02:10:19 00:02:11:26 they become more engaged. 00:02:11:26 00:02:13:13 And what I found is that 00:02:13:13 00:02:14:26 a variety of different issues 00:02:14:26 00:02:16:05 engage different kids, 00:02:16:05 00:02:17:16 so you have to provide 00:02:17:16 00:02:18:22 a variety of issues, because 00:02:18:22 00:02:19:22 some will engage some students 00:02:19:22 00:02:21:13 and some will engage others. 00:02:21:13 00:02:23:08 To start with, though, 00:02:23:08 00:02:24:19 I thought I'd provide to you 00:02:24:19 00:02:27:01 a variety of information. 00:02:27:01 00:02:28:04 So I'm going to show you, 00:02:28:04 00:02:30:08 actually, two video clips. 00:02:30:08 00:02:31:12 And you're going to find 00:02:31:12 00:02:33:01 arguments, both to support 00:02:33:01 00:02:35:12 the yes and the no argument. 00:02:40:21 00:02:41:27 So I think what I'd do is just 00:02:41:27 00:02:43:14 jot down a few words or images 00:02:43:14 00:02:44:13 about some of the arguments 00:02:44:13 00:02:45:11 you heard, 00:02:45:11 00:02:46:11 while you remember them. 00:02:46:11 00:02:47:11 And you can expand on them 00:02:47:11 00:02:48:11 before I show you 00:02:48:11 00:02:51:00 the other videotape. 00:02:51:00 00:02:52:08 >> And so, when the Chief 00:02:52:08 00:02:53:18 stepped foot on the court 00:02:53:18 00:02:55:01 one last time, it seemed as if 00:02:55:01 00:02:56:08 the fans knew that they were 00:02:56:08 00:02:58:03 witnessing something historic, 00:02:58:03 00:03:00:08 the end of a controversial era. 00:03:00:08 00:03:03:07 The Chief's last dance. 00:03:03:07 00:03:04:11 >> Students can bring 00:03:04:11 00:03:05:14 the awareness to me. 00:03:05:14 00:03:06:09 They might have an issue 00:03:06:09 00:03:07:11 or concern 00:03:07:11 00:03:08:16 that they want to talk about. 00:03:08:16 00:03:09:29 I look in the paper. 00:03:09:29 00:03:11:04 I watch the news. 00:03:11:04 00:03:12:22 I like to think 00:03:12:22 00:03:14:07 I'm an engaged citizen. 00:03:14:07 00:03:15:19 So, I can bring some awareness 00:03:15:19 00:03:16:25 to them about what's going on 00:03:16:25 00:03:18:05 in the world. 00:03:18:05 00:03:20:08 And if I'm engaged, 00:03:20:08 00:03:22:10 their parents might be engaged. 00:03:22:10 00:03:23:24 It's kind of an interesting 00:03:23:24 00:03:25:04 marriage between what 00:03:25:04 00:03:26:08 the kids are interested in and 00:03:26:08 00:03:27:24 what's going on in the world. 00:03:27:24 00:03:28:28 Find as many arguments 00:03:28:28 00:03:30:15 as you can, okay? 00:03:30:15 00:03:31:24 Write them in your notes 00:03:31:24 00:03:32:25 and then you and your partner 00:03:32:25 00:03:33:25 will discuss what you think 00:03:33:25 00:03:35:24 are the top four. 00:03:35:24 00:03:37:01 >> So, we're supposed to like, 00:03:37:01 00:03:38:07 skim these and? 00:03:38:07 00:03:39:18 >> Yeah. 00:03:39:18 00:03:40:14 >> Those who want 00:03:40:14 00:03:41:16 the name changed 00:03:41:16 00:03:43:00 would like it changed to what? 00:03:43:00 00:03:44:05 The Pussy Cats 00:03:44:05 00:03:46:16 or the Fighting Librarians? 00:03:46:16 00:03:47:19 You don't name your own team 00:03:47:19 00:03:48:23 after someone or something 00:03:48:23 00:03:49:28 you don't respect. 00:03:49:28 00:03:51:04 >> They had me 00:03:51:04 00:03:52:24 for like the first paragraph. 00:03:52:24 00:03:55:12 After that, it was ridiculous. 00:03:55:12 00:03:56:18 It's like you could name it 00:03:56:18 00:03:58:22 a bunch of other stuff. 00:03:58:22 00:03:59:26 >> It may be a violation 00:03:59:26 00:04:01:18 of civil rights, it says. 00:04:01:18 00:04:03:01 >> I think when 00:04:03:01 00:04:05:11 a teacher comes to the table, 00:04:05:11 00:04:07:25 you always have biases. 00:04:07:25 00:04:09:21 By providing multiple 00:04:09:21 00:04:12:08 perspectives in the classroom 00:04:12:08 00:04:13:16 and when leading the discussion, 00:04:13:16 00:04:15:02 not saying, "Really, 00:04:15:02 00:04:17:19 that's your position?" 00:04:17:19 00:04:18:29 You know, I want to make it 00:04:18:29 00:04:20:08 feel like they can have 00:04:20:08 00:04:21:19 the perspective they want, 00:04:21:19 00:04:23:29 just support it with evidence, 00:04:23:29 00:04:25:07 and teach good arguing skills, 00:04:25:07 00:04:26:29 but not tell them how 00:04:26:29 00:04:29:09 they have to think or believe. 00:04:29:09 00:04:30:13 I heard you over there say, 00:04:30:13 00:04:31:13 "I already have opinions, 00:04:31:13 00:04:32:11 I don't need to write 00:04:32:11 00:04:33:10 stuff down." 00:04:33:10 00:04:34:07 See if there are other arguments 00:04:34:07 00:04:35:21 that help support your position 00:04:35:21 00:04:36:28 on this. 00:04:36:28 00:04:38:07 >> They want to keep it around, 00:04:38:07 00:04:40:02 because it means something 00:04:40:02 00:04:41:12 to the students, and just like, 00:04:41:12 00:04:42:17 it makes the school 00:04:42:17 00:04:43:17 a better place. 00:04:43:17 00:04:44:16 If they got rid of the mascot, 00:04:44:16 00:04:45:20 I think the school 00:04:45:20 00:04:46:22 would just get worse. 00:04:46:22 00:04:47:28 >> On the issue, I'm just hoping 00:04:47:28 00:04:49:06 that they can have 00:04:49:06 00:04:50:10 a broader understanding 00:04:50:10 00:04:51:09 of the controversy, why it's 00:04:51:09 00:04:53:10 a controversy, and perhaps 00:04:53:10 00:04:54:15 why people are pretty emotional 00:04:54:15 00:04:56:04 about it. 00:04:56:04 00:04:57:04 >> All they're saying 00:04:57:04 00:04:58:08 is that they want to honor the 00:04:58:08 00:05:00:14 Native Americans, and not like, 00:05:00:14 00:05:01:23 discriminate them. 00:05:01:23 00:05:02:29 They're not trying 00:05:02:29 00:05:04:25 to take them down. 00:05:04:25 00:05:06:04 >> I think, to be an engaged 00:05:06:04 00:05:07:13 and active citizen is a really 00:05:07:13 00:05:08:17 important goal of a government 00:05:08:17 00:05:10:14 and a social studies curriculum. 00:05:10:14 00:05:11:22 That was why I hadn't 00:05:11:22 00:05:13:29 jumped to the activism part. 00:05:13:29 00:05:15:01 Because I knew that they weren't 00:05:15:01 00:05:17:03 ready to go there yet. 00:05:17:03 00:05:18:19 I wanted them to keep exploring 00:05:18:19 00:05:20:02 the two sides of the issue. 00:05:20:02 00:05:21:09 And I thought it was interesting 00:05:21:09 00:05:22:26 that at the end they were 00:05:22:26 00:05:24:14 actually addressing one another. 00:05:24:14 00:05:25:20 That's one of the big goals 00:05:25:20 00:05:26:27 of my discussion. 00:05:26:27 00:05:28:05 It's not me that they have to 00:05:28:05 00:05:29:11 direct all their comments to. 00:05:29:11 00:05:30:13 They should be talking 00:05:30:13 00:05:31:12 to one another, 00:05:31:12 00:05:32:20 and addressing themselves. 00:05:32:20 00:05:34:02 >> There's other mascots 00:05:34:02 00:05:35:12 that are for like Irish people, 00:05:35:12 00:05:36:13 and stuff like that. 00:05:36:13 00:05:37:08 It's not like 00:05:37:08 00:05:38:11 they're getting offended. 00:05:38:11 00:05:39:10 But I think 00:05:39:10 00:05:40:24 they take it differently, 00:05:40:24 00:05:42:15 because of the past history. 00:05:42:15 00:05:43:23 >> I'm looking at all of these 00:05:43:23 00:05:44:27 in Wisconsin. 00:05:44:27 00:05:46:06 It is such a big part of 00:05:46:06 00:05:47:21 our culture, because of all the 00:05:47:21 00:05:49:09 Indian tribes that were here. 00:05:49:09 00:05:50:18 It's been part of our history. 00:05:50:18 00:05:51:22 It's an important thing 00:05:51:22 00:05:53:20 to be representing. 00:05:53:20 00:05:54:21 >> He's in the school district 00:05:54:21 00:05:55:23 right next door. 00:05:55:23 00:05:56:26 He's arguing that they shouldn't 00:05:56:26 00:05:57:27 have their Native American 00:05:57:27 00:05:59:08 mascot. 00:05:59:08 00:06:01:25 >> Okay, 81%. 00:06:01:25 00:06:03:28 >> 81% of Americans said that 00:06:03:28 00:06:05:24 they shouldn't use mascots 00:06:05:24 00:06:07:05 for high school and college. 00:06:07:05 00:06:10:15 And 83% said no for pro teams. 00:06:10:15 00:06:11:25 >> It kind of seems like 00:06:11:25 00:06:13:19 most of them are saying no 00:06:13:19 00:06:15:03 for anything at all. 00:06:15:03 00:06:16:16 Native Americans are like, 00:06:16:16 00:06:18:01 they don't want it, because 00:06:18:01 00:06:20:04 the way they're using it now 00:06:20:04 00:06:21:27 is derogatory. 00:06:21:27 00:06:23:29 >> So, what from the video, 00:06:23:29 00:06:26:11 what from this do you think are 00:06:26:11 00:06:27:22 the most compelling arguments? 00:06:27:22 00:06:28:22 You don't have to agree with 00:06:28:22 00:06:29:21 them, but just the arguments 00:06:29:21 00:06:30:25 that you think 00:06:30:25 00:06:31:23 are the most compelling. 00:06:31:23 00:06:32:26 Think about once you have 00:06:32:26 00:06:34:01 four really good arguments, 00:06:34:01 00:06:35:01 you're going to team up with 00:06:35:01 00:06:36:01 them and share what arguments 00:06:36:01 00:06:37:10 you came up with. 00:06:37:10 00:06:38:16 >> If they want them banned, 00:06:38:16 00:06:40:00 they should be able to like, 00:06:40:00 00:06:41:11 have the opinion of banning 00:06:41:11 00:06:42:21 them, because like, 00:06:42:21 00:06:43:24 I'm not Native American. 00:06:43:24 00:06:44:24 Sam and I 00:06:44:24 00:06:45:26 both talked about this. 00:06:45:26 00:06:47:04 >> Yeah. 00:06:47:04 00:06:48:11 >> We're not Native Americans. 00:06:48:11 00:06:49:23 >> People use them, like 00:06:49:23 00:06:51:01 an Indian as their mascot, 00:06:51:01 00:06:52:03 because they thought 00:06:52:03 00:06:53:23 that it showed their opposition 00:06:53:23 00:06:55:14 that they were fierce, 00:06:55:14 00:06:56:26 and they were ready to win. 00:06:56:26 00:06:59:08 >> Our first argument was that 00:06:59:08 00:07:02:01 having Indians as a mascot 00:07:02:01 00:07:03:15 is not trying to demoralize 00:07:03:15 00:07:05:17 Native Americans. 00:07:05:17 00:07:06:23 It's more of an honor 00:07:06:23 00:07:08:26 for the Native Americans. 00:07:08:26 00:07:11:00 >> For ours, we said 00:07:11:00 00:07:13:08 it was disrespectful 00:07:13:08 00:07:14:29 to the Indian beliefs. 00:07:14:29 00:07:16:24 Mostly because it's like being 00:07:16:24 00:07:21:01 like they're wanting to fight. 00:07:21:01 00:07:22:22 >> We don't have, like, 00:07:22:22 00:07:25:02 Mexicans as mascots, 00:07:25:02 00:07:27:03 or black people as your mascots. 00:07:27:03 00:07:28:17 We're people, and we're all 00:07:28:17 00:07:29:25 the same, so I don't think 00:07:29:25 00:07:31:02 we should use people 00:07:31:02 00:07:32:29 as our mascots. 00:07:32:29 00:07:34:03 >> The lesson was done 00:07:34:03 00:07:36:17 in two days. 00:07:39:26 00:07:41:02 So I want you 00:07:41:02 00:07:42:01 to switch positions. 00:07:42:01 00:07:43:00 Find and talk about what 00:07:43:00 00:07:43:28 you think the two best ones 00:07:43:28 00:07:44:28 are that you've already heard. 00:07:44:28 00:07:46:17 Try to come up with a new one. 00:07:46:17 00:07:48:03 Then I want you to come back 00:07:48:03 00:07:49:26 together as a group of four, 00:07:49:26 00:07:51:01 share your arguments 00:07:51:01 00:07:52:15 that you thought were the best. 00:07:52:15 00:07:53:26 And then I have a ten-minute 00:07:53:26 00:07:55:12 video to show you, to further 00:07:55:12 00:07:57:03 enhance your understanding 00:07:57:03 00:07:58:13 of the issue. 00:07:58:13 00:08:00:28 Yeah, I think video, pictures, 00:08:00:28 00:08:03:16 any sort of technology 00:08:03:16 00:08:04:16 is important. 00:08:04:16 00:08:05:17 Kids are used to that. 00:08:05:17 00:08:06:17 They see all these images 00:08:06:17 00:08:07:12 all day. 00:08:07:12 00:08:08:26 They do those sorts of things. 00:08:08:26 00:08:10:06 So, to be able to bring that 00:08:10:06 00:08:11:08 into the classroom, 00:08:11:08 00:08:12:28 that's part of the engagement, 00:08:12:28 00:08:15:20 to have a variety of ways 00:08:15:20 00:08:17:16 for them to take in information. 00:08:17:16 00:08:18:29 >> People who don't know 00:08:18:29 00:08:21:01 as much may not be as careful 00:08:21:01 00:08:22:21 how to use it. 00:08:22:21 00:08:25:06 >> Okay, so what if you had 00:08:25:06 00:08:27:09 a friend who was Native American 00:08:27:09 00:08:29:05 and he or she found it 00:08:29:05 00:08:31:03 offensive? 00:08:31:03 00:08:32:17 >> I'm confused. 00:08:32:17 00:08:34:13 The yes side, I think, can say 00:08:34:13 00:08:36:06 that they should be banned, 00:08:36:06 00:08:38:29 just 'cause they're racist. 00:08:38:29 00:08:40:26 But then, the only thing 00:08:40:26 00:08:42:23 I agree with on the other side, 00:08:42:23 00:08:44:06 is that they show, like, bravery 00:08:44:06 00:08:45:23 and power, and stuff, 00:08:45:23 00:08:47:08 so it's kind of respectful. 00:08:47:08 00:08:48:28 >> But you know, in the same way 00:08:48:28 00:08:50:22 you're showing the bravery 00:08:50:22 00:08:52:12 and power, you're kind of 00:08:52:12 00:08:54:15 showing silliness. 00:08:54:15 00:08:55:28 >> But like for the other side, 00:08:55:28 00:08:57:18 they show respect. 00:08:57:18 00:08:59:24 So, I'm really confused. 00:08:59:24 00:09:01:07 >> It's nice that 00:09:01:07 00:09:03:01 they're choosing Indians 00:09:03:01 00:09:04:24 to portray what's respectful. 00:09:04:24 00:09:06:03 What's disrespectful is how 00:09:06:03 00:09:08:19 they portray them, you know? 00:09:08:19 00:09:10:00 >> Most people that are racist 00:09:10:00 00:09:11:10 aren't people that you think 00:09:11:10 00:09:12:24 would be. 00:09:12:24 00:09:13:24 >> Yeah. 00:09:13:24 00:09:14:21 >> I thought that was, that 00:09:14:21 00:09:16:10 they used the resources well. 00:09:16:10 00:09:17:28 >> We looked at this map 00:09:17:28 00:09:20:05 and saw that most of the schools 00:09:20:05 00:09:21:21 that have Indians as mascots 00:09:21:21 00:09:23:07 are in southern 00:09:23:07 00:09:25:14 and eastern Wisconsin, 00:09:25:14 00:09:27:18 whereas all the tribes and that 00:09:27:18 00:09:29:00 kind of thing, the reservations, 00:09:29:00 00:09:31:16 are in northern. 00:09:31:16 00:09:33:00 So, we weren't sure 00:09:33:00 00:09:34:06 what that meant at first. 00:09:34:06 00:09:35:22 But we came to the conclusion 00:09:35:22 00:09:37:02 that the people that don't know 00:09:37:02 00:09:39:10 as much may not be as careful 00:09:39:10 00:09:40:28 to how they use it, 00:09:40:28 00:09:42:23 how that may affect people. 00:09:42:23 00:09:43:25 >> I think it'd be 00:09:43:25 00:09:45:21 more respectful. 00:09:45:21 00:09:47:28 Like, we're using it. 00:09:47:28 00:09:49:05 >> Showing respect. 00:09:49:05 00:09:50:18 >> Like in here, 00:09:50:18 00:09:52:05 they're saying how like, 00:09:52:05 00:09:53:20 they got the information wrong. 00:09:53:20 00:09:54:25 And they're saying that this 00:09:54:25 00:09:56:10 one mascot was this chief, but 00:09:56:10 00:09:58:18 in reality, he wasn't actually. 00:09:58:18 00:10:00:01 >> It does impact your children. 00:10:00:01 00:10:01:04 That's what this American 00:10:01:04 00:10:02:19 Psychological Association found. 00:10:02:19 00:10:04:22 I'm saying that because they're 00:10:04:22 00:10:07:10 using Indians as mascots, 00:10:07:10 00:10:09:14 the only reason people 00:10:09:14 00:10:10:20 are getting upset 00:10:10:20 00:10:11:19 is because of the past history 00:10:11:19 00:10:13:29 that America has had with them. 00:10:13:29 00:10:15:04 >> I have a video. 00:10:15:04 00:10:16:25 It's about ten minutes long. 00:10:16:25 00:10:18:07 It's going to talk 00:10:18:07 00:10:19:10 about this issue. 00:10:19:10 00:10:20:12 And what this issue does, 00:10:20:12 00:10:21:19 is it brings it now, 00:10:21:19 00:10:22:29 down to Wisconsin's level, 00:10:22:29 00:10:24:17 at our state level. 00:10:24:17 00:10:25:28 So, you're going to meet some 00:10:25:28 00:10:28:10 kids from Prescott, Wisconsin. 00:10:28:10 00:10:29:19 They do not have an Indian 00:10:29:19 00:10:31:02 mascot, but a number of schools 00:10:31:02 00:10:32:20 in their conference do. 00:10:32:20 00:10:34:08 They are looking more broadly. 00:10:34:08 00:10:35:15 Now, we're kind of narrowing 00:10:35:15 00:10:36:25 the issue a little bit, 00:10:36:25 00:10:38:05 and they can see kids their age 00:10:38:05 00:10:39:11 and what they felt 00:10:39:11 00:10:41:06 about the issue. 00:10:42:29 00:10:44:05 >> Being non-Indian people, 00:10:44:05 00:10:45:04 there's a lot of people 00:10:45:04 00:10:46:00 who would say, 00:10:46:00 00:10:47:17 "Why do you care?" 00:10:47:17 00:10:48:18 Why should you care 00:10:48:18 00:10:50:12 about an issue like this? 00:10:50:12 00:10:51:16 >> We had to write an essay 00:10:51:16 00:10:52:22 on our opinion, about do you 00:10:52:22 00:10:53:27 think Native American mascots 00:10:53:27 00:10:55:18 are offensive. 00:10:55:18 00:10:56:20 >> It hurts the self-esteem 00:10:56:20 00:10:58:00 of Native Americans. 00:10:58:00 00:10:59:14 >> It hits close to home, 00:10:59:14 00:11:01:01 because we have a bunch 00:11:01:01 00:11:02:07 of schools in our area 00:11:02:07 00:11:04:01 that do have Indian mascots. 00:11:04:01 00:11:05:21 I know Native Americans, 00:11:05:21 00:11:06:28 hearing them say, 00:11:06:28 00:11:09:10 "That's very offensive to me," 00:11:09:10 00:11:13:02 made way more of an impact. 00:11:13:02 00:11:14:07 >> How many of you, 00:11:14:07 00:11:15:13 raise your hand, if you have an 00:11:15:13 00:11:17:12 opinion on this issue right now? 00:11:17:12 00:11:19:00 Okay. 00:11:19:00 00:11:20:28 How many of you are still 00:11:20:28 00:11:24:09 forming your opinion right now? 00:11:24:09 00:11:25:17 Okay, all right. 00:11:25:17 00:11:26:24 This is kind of interesting. 00:11:26:24 00:11:28:18 So, I'm going to open it up now, 00:11:28:18 00:11:29:29 and let's address our question. 00:11:29:29 00:11:32:10 And our question is, 00:11:32:10 00:11:34:11 should Wisconsin ban the use 00:11:34:11 00:11:36:26 of American Indian mascot logos 00:11:36:26 00:11:39:21 in their public schools? 00:11:39:21 00:11:40:28 In the discussion that we had 00:11:40:28 00:11:43:12 today, it started a little slow. 00:11:43:12 00:11:45:16 And so, just allowing students, 00:11:45:16 00:11:47:15 kind of that space, 00:11:47:15 00:11:49:03 to kind of think about it. 00:11:49:03 00:11:50:23 >> I think because 00:11:50:23 00:11:52:21 it'll affect a lot of people, 00:11:52:21 00:11:54:24 I think it should be voted on 00:11:54:24 00:11:56:07 by the people, instead of 00:11:56:07 00:11:58:22 the elected, the committee. 00:11:58:22 00:12:00:02 >> What do you mean? 00:12:00:02 00:12:01:12 >> It should be on the ballot. 00:12:01:12 00:12:02:12 >> Oh, so you think this should 00:12:02:12 00:12:03:18 be a referendum question 00:12:03:18 00:12:05:05 for everyone to weigh in on. 00:12:05:05 00:12:06:10 >> Yeah. 00:12:06:10 00:12:07:14 >> I think you need to 00:12:07:14 00:12:08:13 look at how the mascot 00:12:08:13 00:12:09:23 is being depicted, like, 00:12:09:23 00:12:12:02 Cleveland's baseball mascot, 00:12:12:02 00:12:14:02 I mean, that's pretty bad. 00:12:14:02 00:12:15:24 But otherwise, there are some 00:12:15:24 00:12:17:19 that it's just an arrow 00:12:17:19 00:12:19:03 with a feather. 00:12:19:03 00:12:20:22 >> But it does show honor, that 00:12:20:22 00:12:23:01 they chose Native Americans, 00:12:23:01 00:12:24:23 you know, to be their mascot. 00:12:24:23 00:12:26:08 But what the dishonor is, 00:12:26:08 00:12:27:29 is how they portray them, 00:12:27:29 00:12:29:04 like with the dances 00:12:29:04 00:12:30:17 and the tomahawk chop, 00:12:30:17 00:12:32:22 and stuff like that. 00:12:32:22 00:12:34:14 Like, with the dances 00:12:34:14 00:12:35:26 and the war cries, too. 00:12:35:26 00:12:36:27 Native Americans, 00:12:36:27 00:12:38:01 when they do those things, 00:12:38:01 00:12:39:04 it means something. 00:12:39:04 00:12:41:04 And for them, it's just like, 00:12:41:04 00:12:42:08 just doing it. 00:12:42:08 00:12:43:11 They don't know 00:12:43:11 00:12:44:24 what they're doing. 00:12:44:24 00:12:46:14 >> If people, if they're not 00:12:46:14 00:12:47:21 okay with all the dancing, 00:12:47:21 00:12:48:20 and stuff, then they 00:12:48:20 00:12:49:20 probably shouldn't be using 00:12:49:20 00:12:50:24 their mascots. 00:12:50:24 00:12:51:23 Because the purpose 00:12:51:23 00:12:53:20 that we have them for 00:12:53:20 00:12:54:22 is to get everybody going. 00:12:54:22 00:12:55:23 So, I don't know if it's 00:12:55:23 00:12:56:26 necessarily that we're being 00:12:56:26 00:12:58:01 disrespectful to their culture, 00:12:58:01 00:12:59:28 or if we're just doing what 00:12:59:28 00:13:01:19 the whole purpose, in our minds, 00:13:01:19 00:13:03:13 of what a mascot is. 00:13:03:13 00:13:04:20 >> Okay, so what I'm hearing 00:13:04:20 00:13:06:00 you say, Sarah, is that 00:13:06:00 00:13:07:02 you're having trouble, 00:13:07:02 00:13:08:09 where do you draw the line. 00:13:08:09 00:13:09:08 >> Yeah. 00:13:09:08 00:13:10:08 >> It's hard to draw that line 00:13:10:08 00:13:11:09 a little bit. 00:13:11:09 00:13:12:18 Interesting. 00:13:12:18 00:13:14:16 >> I think we should ask, 00:13:14:16 00:13:16:07 like in that article, 00:13:16:07 00:13:17:23 the actual Native Americans, 00:13:17:23 00:13:19:00 and see what they think. 00:13:19:00 00:13:20:10 And if they don't mind it, 00:13:20:10 00:13:21:21 it shouldn't be changed 00:13:21:21 00:13:22:29 because it's not offending 00:13:22:29 00:13:24:15 many people at all. 00:13:24:15 00:13:25:19 >> There's always going to be 00:13:25:19 00:13:26:21 people that don't agree, 00:13:26:21 00:13:27:19 so you might as well 00:13:27:19 00:13:29:10 just kind of play it safe. 00:13:29:10 00:13:30:12 >> But if we do what Morgan 00:13:30:12 00:13:31:14 says, then we're going to have 00:13:31:14 00:13:33:00 to try and please everyone. 00:13:33:00 00:13:35:01 And like, you can't do that, 00:13:35:01 00:13:36:04 because someone is always going 00:13:36:04 00:13:37:27 to be offended by something, 00:13:37:27 00:13:39:29 or not like something else. 00:13:39:29 00:13:41:22 >> All right, thank you guys. 00:13:41:22 00:13:42:23 You can leave the desks 00:13:42:23 00:13:43:24 how they are. 00:13:43:24 00:13:45:02 I'll fix them. 00:13:45:02 00:13:46:15 Over all, I was pleased with how 00:13:46:15 00:13:48:05 they engaged with the materials, 00:13:48:05 00:13:49:14 how they talked to one another, 00:13:49:14 00:13:50:28 and I thought 00:13:50:28 00:13:52:21 they did pretty well. 00:14:01:11 00:14:02:27 >> For more information, 00:14:02:27 00:14:04:13 visit us on the Web at: 00:14:04:13 00:14:08:21 ecb.org/engage
