Testing testing 00:05:50:00 00:05:54:00 one Two three testing testing 00:05:54:00 00:05:57:00 one two three testing Testing 00:05:57:00 00:06:05:00 testing one two three. 00:06:05:00 00:06:06:00 Yeah I don't think I don't know 00:06:06:00 00:06:06:00 that it's projecting. 00:06:06:00 00:06:08:00 That's what We're trying to 00:06:08:00 00:06:22:00 figure out here Testing Testing 00:06:22:00 00:07:17:00 00:07:17:00 >> Yes. 00:07:17:00 00:07:18:00 Not a new profession. 00:07:18:00 00:07:18:00 Yes. 00:07:18:00 00:07:21:00 It's going great. 00:07:21:00 00:07:22:00 I think what I'll do is some 00:07:22:00 00:07:24:00 announcements Before we get 00:07:24:00 00:07:25:00 going. 00:07:25:00 00:07:26:00 I think you've seen in the back 00:07:26:00 00:07:28:00 Wisconsin public Television 00:07:28:00 00:07:29:00 will be filming this. 00:07:29:00 00:07:30:00 >> So let's all be on our best 00:07:30:00 00:07:31:00 behavior. 00:07:31:00 00:07:32:00 And if there is an inclination 00:07:32:00 00:07:35:00 for a standing Ovation at 00:07:35:00 00:07:36:00 the end, don't do it because 00:07:36:00 00:07:37:00 you're going to break. 00:07:37:00 00:07:37:00 BLOCK the camera. 00:07:37:00 00:07:40:00 OK, So not that they're 00:07:40:00 00:07:42:00 necessarily will be. 00:07:42:00 00:07:43:00 >> Thanks for attending 00:07:43:00 00:07:44:00 the seminar in Emmert in 00:07:44:00 00:07:47:00 emergency Please exit as 00:07:47:00 00:07:47:00 quickly and calmly through 00:07:47:00 00:07:49:00 the rear entrance. 00:07:49:00 00:07:50:00 Please turn off all electronic 00:07:50:00 00:07:50:00 devices. 00:07:50:00 00:07:54:00 And don't forget Your yellow 00:07:54:00 00:07:54:00 evaluations. 00:07:54:00 00:07:55:00 The feedback is important for a 00:07:55:00 00:07:57:00 future Presentations and 00:07:57:00 00:07:58:00 important to get those filled 00:07:58:00 00:08:01:00 out And I'm going to just pause 00:08:01:00 00:08:02:00 until I get a signal we're 00:08:02:00 00:08:05:00 going to we're Gonna dove into 00:08:05:00 00:08:05:00 this topic. 00:08:05:00 00:08:06:00 >> Thanks for coming everyone. 00:08:06:00 00:08:16:00 Morning Everyone. 00:08:16:00 00:08:16:00 My name is Mark Dwyer. 00:08:16:00 00:08:19:00 Many If you perhaps know me 00:08:19:00 00:08:20:00 from my previous career at 00:08:20:00 00:08:22:00 Rotary Botanical Gardens In 00:08:22:00 00:08:23:00 Janesville, Wisconsin. 00:08:23:00 00:08:26:00 I left after 21 years last 00:08:26:00 00:08:27:00 August and started my own 00:08:27:00 00:08:27:00 business called Landscape 00:08:27:00 00:08:30:00 Prescriptions by M.D. And I 00:08:30:00 00:08:31:00 have a booth here so I won't go 00:08:31:00 00:08:32:00 into a lot of detail but I'm 00:08:32:00 00:08:34:00 I'm still Involved in the field 00:08:34:00 00:08:35:00 and still a tree hugger and 00:08:35:00 00:08:35:00 love plants. 00:08:35:00 00:08:38:00 So do stop By my booth and see 00:08:38:00 00:08:38:00 what I'm doing. 00:08:38:00 00:08:39:00 We're gonna dove into a real 00:08:39:00 00:08:41:00 fun topic Today though I think 00:08:41:00 00:08:41:00 it's important. 00:08:41:00 00:08:42:00 The reason why we come to these 00:08:42:00 00:08:45:00 garden expos Is not only to get 00:08:45:00 00:08:46:00 a hint of spring and be 00:08:46:00 00:08:46:00 inspired through these winter 00:08:46:00 00:08:49:00 months but Certainly to get 00:08:49:00 00:08:50:00 some ideas and talk about new 00:08:50:00 00:08:52:00 ways of gardening better Ways 00:08:52:00 00:08:52:00 of gardening. 00:08:52:00 00:08:53:00 And hopefully we continue to 00:08:53:00 00:08:56:00 not only garden but Share our 00:08:56:00 00:08:57:00 love of gardening to youth and 00:08:57:00 00:09:00:00 perpetuate the importance Being 00:09:00:00 00:09:00:00 outside in that connection in 00:09:00:00 00:09:01:00 our our landscapes and gardens. 00:09:01:00 00:09:03:00 So gardening as we age there 00:09:03:00 00:09:04:00 was a handout we may have run 00:09:04:00 00:09:07:00 out but hopefully Many of you 00:09:07:00 00:09:07:00 got it. 00:09:07:00 00:09:09:00 A lot of the text you may see 00:09:09:00 00:09:11:00 is On that handout so you don't 00:09:11:00 00:09:11:00 have to scribble a lot that you 00:09:11:00 00:09:14:00 may see on the screen but I do 00:09:14:00 00:09:15:00 want to show you some nice 00:09:15:00 00:09:16:00 images and in chitchat a little 00:09:16:00 00:09:18:00 bit about Again gardening not 00:09:18:00 00:09:19:00 only as we age and I should say 00:09:19:00 00:09:21:00 clarifying The topic. 00:09:21:00 00:09:22:00 This isn't gardening for mature 00:09:22:00 00:09:25:00 gardeners Meaning it's not all 00:09:25:00 00:09:26:00 older gardeners. 00:09:26:00 00:09:28:00 I think through the progression 00:09:28:00 00:09:29:00 Of our lives it's important 00:09:29:00 00:09:30:00 understand there's different 00:09:30:00 00:09:31:00 ways of gardening and ways of 00:09:31:00 00:09:33:00 approaching It with the intent 00:09:33:00 00:09:34:00 of hopefully being able to do 00:09:34:00 00:09:36:00 it as long as we possibly Can. 00:09:36:00 00:09:37:00 Certainly enjoying the benefits 00:09:37:00 00:09:38:00 of being immersed in our our 00:09:38:00 00:09:40:00 magical Spaces. 00:09:40:00 00:09:41:00 A couple of volunteers here at 00:09:41:00 00:09:44:00 Rotary Botanical Gardens doing 00:09:44:00 00:09:45:00 a wonderful job and I may 00:09:45:00 00:09:47:00 despite leaving The gardens 00:09:47:00 00:09:48:00 I'll talk quite a bit about 00:09:48:00 00:09:49:00 what we were doing there 00:09:49:00 00:09:49:00 because not only do we have 00:09:49:00 00:09:51:00 many Volunteers but had a 00:09:51:00 00:09:52:00 strong approach to making sure 00:09:52:00 00:09:55:00 everyone was gardening In a 00:09:55:00 00:09:56:00 great capacity. 00:09:56:00 00:09:56:00 So I mentioned the topic 00:09:56:00 00:09:59:00 clarification It's gardening 00:09:59:00 00:10:00:00 not only in our later years but 00:10:00:00 00:10:02:00 taking into Account hopefully a 00:10:02:00 00:10:03:00 full life of gardening. 00:10:03:00 00:10:04:00 Now many of you may be our new 00:10:04:00 00:10:07:00 gardeners And your interest in 00:10:07:00 00:10:07:00 the Expos is getting started 00:10:07:00 00:10:11:00 and that's that's wonderful. 00:10:11:00 00:10:12:00 Absolutely. 00:10:12:00 00:10:12:00 But I think the importance of 00:10:12:00 00:10:13:00 connecting kids with gardening 00:10:13:00 00:10:14:00 Experiences creates gardeners 00:10:14:00 00:10:14:00 for life and that connection 00:10:14:00 00:10:17:00 becomes Important for future 00:10:17:00 00:10:18:00 enjoyment without a doubt. 00:10:18:00 00:10:22:00 >> So it tugs on 00:10:22:00 00:10:22:00 the heartstrings without a 00:10:22:00 00:10:22:00 doubt. 00:10:22:00 00:10:25:00 >> These Kids these are some 00:10:25:00 00:10:25:00 leftover vegetables for our 00:10:25:00 00:10:28:00 annual spring plant Sale so 00:10:28:00 00:10:29:00 donations would go to community 00:10:29:00 00:10:31:00 gardens and kids gardens And 00:10:31:00 00:10:32:00 you know, you get gardeners for 00:10:32:00 00:10:33:00 life when they take a plant and 00:10:33:00 00:10:36:00 nurture it And that might be as 00:10:36:00 00:10:37:00 easy as a seed packet or their 00:10:37:00 00:10:39:00 own tomato plant. 00:10:39:00 00:10:40:00 A couple of the kids are are 00:10:40:00 00:10:41:00 holding rhubarb there so that 00:10:41:00 00:10:43:00 might be an acquired Taste for 00:10:43:00 00:10:43:00 them later on. 00:10:43:00 00:10:47:00 But we'll we'll see And I can't 00:10:47:00 00:10:47:00 say enough about one of 00:10:47:00 00:10:48:00 the most important images 00:10:48:00 00:10:48:00 you'll see this morning I think 00:10:48:00 00:10:51:00 is this And gardening is 00:10:51:00 00:10:53:00 the age includes the youngsters 00:10:53:00 00:10:54:00 At our plant sale seeing mom 00:10:54:00 00:10:55:00 and son here working together, 00:10:55:00 00:11:00:00 selecting Varieties for home 00:11:00:00 00:11:01:00 Again these connections a 00:11:01:00 00:11:05:00 little Amanda Here it was only 00:11:05:00 00:11:06:00 say 18 months less than two 00:11:06:00 00:11:06:00 years old. 00:11:06:00 00:11:08:00 >> They They are helping mom do 00:11:08:00 00:11:09:00 some planting and again that 00:11:09:00 00:11:12:00 connection Becomes so 00:11:12:00 00:11:12:00 important. 00:11:12:00 00:11:15:00 So are you grunting yet? 00:11:15:00 00:11:17:00 >> You know, I am you know, 00:11:17:00 00:11:19:00 I'll be I'll be 50 This year 00:11:19:00 00:11:20:00 and they say 50. 00:11:20:00 00:11:24:00 I know. 00:11:24:00 00:11:29:00 >> So Thank you for the thank 00:11:29:00 00:11:30:00 you for the sympathy. 00:11:30:00 00:11:33:00 So a 50 is the new 40. 00:11:33:00 00:11:36:00 That means I should feel like 00:11:36:00 00:11:37:00 I'm 39 and I really don't. 00:11:37:00 00:11:40:00 But I am grunting now And I 00:11:40:00 00:11:40:00 feel like there's a couple of 00:11:40:00 00:11:41:00 things I could have done 00:11:41:00 00:11:41:00 differently. 00:11:41:00 00:11:44:00 We're Not all as flexible as 00:11:44:00 00:11:45:00 Eva, one of our volunteers at 00:11:45:00 00:11:47:00 Rotary Gardens And the idea of 00:11:47:00 00:11:48:00 getting down to doing 00:11:48:00 00:11:48:00 traditional two dimensional 00:11:48:00 00:11:49:00 gardening, getting down at 00:11:49:00 00:11:51:00 ground Level which is how we 00:11:51:00 00:11:52:00 typically garden in most cases 00:11:52:00 00:11:55:00 becomes more difficult And 00:11:55:00 00:11:55:00 maybe we're paring back a 00:11:55:00 00:11:56:00 little bit on the space where 00:11:56:00 00:11:57:00 we're gardening in this 00:11:57:00 00:11:59:00 capacity Not so much 00:11:59:00 00:12:00:00 the enjoyment of plants growing 00:12:00:00 00:12:02:00 in these situations but 00:12:02:00 00:12:02:00 The actual getting down and 00:12:02:00 00:12:03:00 dirty becomes a little more 00:12:03:00 00:12:03:00 difficult. 00:12:03:00 00:12:06:00 >> It should continue to be 00:12:06:00 00:12:07:00 enjoyable, no doubt about it. 00:12:07:00 00:12:10:00 >> Glenna Miller here On 00:12:10:00 00:12:10:00 the left is 85 years young. 00:12:10:00 00:12:11:00 She actually passed recently. 00:12:11:00 00:12:13:00 But it's about adjusting our 00:12:13:00 00:12:14:00 approach and expectations. 00:12:14:00 00:12:17:00 So The reality check if we're 00:12:17:00 00:12:18:00 doing things that are painful 00:12:18:00 00:12:19:00 and we're starting perhaps to 00:12:19:00 00:12:21:00 do More of those things, we 00:12:21:00 00:12:21:00 need to alter how we approach 00:12:21:00 00:12:21:00 that. 00:12:21:00 00:12:24:00 And I think all too Often we 00:12:24:00 00:12:25:00 realize the benefits of 00:12:25:00 00:12:25:00 gardening, the exercise, 00:12:25:00 00:12:27:00 the fresh air And sometimes we 00:12:27:00 00:12:28:00 feel the burn the next day. 00:12:28:00 00:12:31:00 But sometimes it's Not a bad 00:12:31:00 00:12:32:00 thing knowing that we got out 00:12:32:00 00:12:33:00 there and and we're moving and 00:12:33:00 00:12:35:00 I'm on the soapbox Here so I 00:12:35:00 00:12:36:00 have the captive audience but 00:12:36:00 00:12:36:00 all too often people aren't 00:12:36:00 00:12:39:00 moving as much As they used to. 00:12:39:00 00:12:40:00 And an interesting fact that 00:12:40:00 00:12:42:00 Americans spend 93 percent 00:12:42:00 00:12:43:00 Other time inside on average. 00:12:43:00 00:12:43:00 That's that's crazy. 00:12:43:00 00:12:47:00 And I think we need to change 00:12:47:00 00:12:47:00 that trend and get out in our 00:12:47:00 00:12:48:00 gardens. 00:12:48:00 00:12:50:00 The founder Of Rotary Gardens, 00:12:50:00 00:12:53:00 Dr. Robert Yar, 94 years young 00:12:53:00 00:12:54:00 , he's not able to garden in 00:12:54:00 00:12:57:00 this capacity anymore as He's 00:12:57:00 00:12:58:00 aged but he gardens in 00:12:58:00 00:12:58:00 containers at home and his 00:12:58:00 00:13:01:00 modified He's still getting his 00:13:01:00 00:13:01:00 fix, so to speak by modifying 00:13:01:00 00:13:04:00 his garden at home. 00:13:04:00 00:13:05:00 >> This image. 00:13:05:00 00:13:06:00 >> These young ladies in their 00:13:06:00 00:13:08:00 earlier Years were active 00:13:08:00 00:13:09:00 gardeners and in a assisted 00:13:09:00 00:13:11:00 living Situation where simply 00:13:11:00 00:13:12:00 reporting house plants 00:13:12:00 00:13:15:00 the connection with the Soil 00:13:15:00 00:13:18:00 not only a task done well and 00:13:18:00 00:13:19:00 The sense of completion and 00:13:19:00 00:13:19:00 camaraderie and everything that 00:13:19:00 00:13:22:00 goes hand-in-hand With 00:13:22:00 00:13:23:00 the socialization here. 00:13:23:00 00:13:24:00 But it can be as simple as 00:13:24:00 00:13:26:00 something Like this for for 00:13:26:00 00:13:27:00 getting a fix and Rotary 00:13:27:00 00:13:28:00 Gardens is now going on 00:13:28:00 00:13:29:00 the road with Programs like 00:13:29:00 00:13:30:00 this which I think is 00:13:30:00 00:13:30:00 important. 00:13:30:00 00:13:31:00 There's a lot of demographics 00:13:31:00 00:13:33:00 and groups That can't can't 00:13:33:00 00:13:34:00 literally get to our botanic 00:13:34:00 00:13:37:00 garden And as a side note do 00:13:37:00 00:13:38:00 always visit your local botanic 00:13:38:00 00:13:40:00 gardens without a doubt. 00:13:40:00 00:13:41:00 So. 00:13:41:00 00:13:42:00 So what are your priorities? 00:13:42:00 00:13:42:00 The realistic assessment of 00:13:42:00 00:13:44:00 what your garden Needs because 00:13:44:00 00:13:47:00 all too often we may be perhaps 00:13:47:00 00:13:48:00 Install more than we can 00:13:48:00 00:13:49:00 maintain and that's why it's 00:13:49:00 00:13:51:00 important to incremental 00:13:51:00 00:13:52:00 Install and expand our gardens, 00:13:52:00 00:13:55:00 make sure you can maintain What 00:13:55:00 00:13:56:00 you're what you're putting out 00:13:56:00 00:13:57:00 there and I use myself as an 00:13:57:00 00:13:57:00 example. 00:13:57:00 00:14:00:00 We tore out Our entire front 00:14:00:00 00:14:00:00 yard and we're well intentioned 00:14:00:00 00:14:02:00 with vegetables and Planting 00:14:02:00 00:14:03:00 the front yard and within two 00:14:03:00 00:14:04:00 to three years we realised that 00:14:04:00 00:14:07:00 was a Huge mistake and are now 00:14:07:00 00:14:08:00 paring back and I'm not a huge 00:14:08:00 00:14:10:00 fan of turf But we are going 00:14:10:00 00:14:11:00 back to some turf in front. 00:14:11:00 00:14:12:00 We just can't keep up with it. 00:14:12:00 00:14:14:00 >> So account for 00:14:14:00 00:14:15:00 the discrepancy and what you 00:14:15:00 00:14:17:00 can physically do or account 00:14:17:00 00:14:18:00 For and what you have to be 00:14:18:00 00:14:19:00 done and I think that makes 00:14:19:00 00:14:19:00 sense. 00:14:19:00 00:14:21:00 And there's no shame in editing 00:14:21:00 00:14:22:00 your garden or doing something 00:14:22:00 00:14:22:00 a little different. 00:14:22:00 00:14:25:00 But we'll Talk about some 00:14:25:00 00:14:26:00 opportunities as they relate to 00:14:26:00 00:14:29:00 physical Adjustments how we can 00:14:29:00 00:14:29:00 change how we approach 00:14:29:00 00:14:30:00 gardening. 00:14:30:00 00:14:32:00 >> Adapting the Garden and 00:14:32:00 00:14:32:00 certainly there's some 00:14:32:00 00:14:35:00 wonderful tools that are Better 00:14:35:00 00:14:37:00 for us to use as a side note at 00:14:37:00 00:14:39:00 ten thirty Next door. 00:14:39:00 00:14:40:00 There's a wonderful talk and 00:14:40:00 00:14:42:00 ergonomic and adaptive Tools 00:14:42:00 00:14:43:00 for the garden. 00:14:43:00 00:14:44:00 That's from a group of 00:14:44:00 00:14:46:00 Milwaukee mayor area Master 00:14:46:00 00:14:47:00 gardeners. 00:14:47:00 00:14:48:00 They do an excellent job and 00:14:48:00 00:14:49:00 they paid me Forty dollars to 00:14:49:00 00:14:53:00 say that Take care of your 00:14:53:00 00:14:53:00 body. 00:14:53:00 00:14:54:00 >> Think your body is a 00:14:54:00 00:14:56:00 gardening tool Going back in 00:14:56:00 00:14:57:00 time I would have done a lot of 00:14:57:00 00:14:58:00 things differently that would 00:14:58:00 00:15:00:00 include Just four for feeling 00:15:00:00 00:15:01:00 better in life. 00:15:01:00 00:15:04:00 A lot of stretching And yoga 00:15:04:00 00:15:04:00 and some other things. 00:15:04:00 00:15:07:00 I know it's never too late but 00:15:07:00 00:15:08:00 Use your body properly 00:15:08:00 00:15:11:00 maximizing longevity obviously 00:15:11:00 00:15:12:00 Is a goal for for all of us. 00:15:12:00 00:15:13:00 >> Knees and back of course are 00:15:13:00 00:15:15:00 prone to more Strain and at 00:15:15:00 00:15:16:00 Rotary Gardens seeing 00:15:16:00 00:15:16:00 the median age of volunteers 00:15:16:00 00:15:18:00 increase Because that's a sad 00:15:18:00 00:15:19:00 commentary as we're not seeing 00:15:19:00 00:15:19:00 younger volunteers. 00:15:19:00 00:15:22:00 Everyone seems busy regardless 00:15:22:00 00:15:23:00 of what's going on in folks 00:15:23:00 00:15:26:00 whose lives we're not seeing 30 00:15:26:00 00:15:27:00 to 40 year old volunteers for 00:15:27:00 00:15:27:00 the most part. 00:15:27:00 00:15:30:00 So You know there is a strain 00:15:30:00 00:15:30:00 on our bodies as we get older. 00:15:30:00 00:15:33:00 So I've seen Volunteers change 00:15:33:00 00:15:34:00 what they're able to do and we 00:15:34:00 00:15:37:00 accommodate that. 00:15:37:00 00:15:38:00 But again, we all want our 00:15:38:00 00:15:40:00 bodies to do what we need out 00:15:40:00 00:15:41:00 Not only in our gardens but in 00:15:41:00 00:15:41:00 life in general. 00:15:41:00 00:15:44:00 So the comfortable range 00:15:44:00 00:15:45:00 Emotions, all the things that 00:15:45:00 00:15:45:00 make sense. 00:15:45:00 00:15:46:00 >> Don't ignore those nagging 00:15:46:00 00:15:48:00 challenges, those issues where 00:15:48:00 00:15:49:00 maybe there is some some pain 00:15:49:00 00:15:52:00 or are stress Or strain on your 00:15:52:00 00:15:53:00 body. 00:15:53:00 00:15:53:00 >> Again, some examples. 00:15:53:00 00:15:56:00 Adele's 90 and he's he's pretty 00:15:56:00 00:15:56:00 limber. 00:15:56:00 00:15:59:00 He's doing This thing. 00:15:59:00 00:16:00:00 So some sound advice when 00:16:00:00 00:16:00:00 you're gardening. 00:16:00:00 00:16:02:00 Take your time. 00:16:02:00 00:16:03:00 It's not a it's not a race. 00:16:03:00 00:16:04:00 The good pastor thing becomes 00:16:04:00 00:16:04:00 important. 00:16:04:00 00:16:07:00 Good pastor in life varying 00:16:07:00 00:16:07:00 the tasks. 00:16:07:00 00:16:10:00 You know, if You're down on 00:16:10:00 00:16:11:00 the ground weeding, it's hard 00:16:11:00 00:16:11:00 to stop. 00:16:11:00 00:16:12:00 We know that. 00:16:12:00 00:16:14:00 And as you move along You 00:16:14:00 00:16:15:00 realize you're two to three 00:16:15:00 00:16:16:00 hours into it and you need help 00:16:16:00 00:16:18:00 getting up, you know, and that 00:16:18:00 00:16:18:00 happens. 00:16:18:00 00:16:21:00 But by by varying your tasks 00:16:21:00 00:16:22:00 Again it makes sense in life 00:16:22:00 00:16:22:00 you're you're minimizing 00:16:22:00 00:16:25:00 the strain that one Task might 00:16:25:00 00:16:26:00 be perpetuating on your body 00:16:26:00 00:16:28:00 that could be constant planting 00:16:28:00 00:16:29:00 For hours on end and at 00:16:29:00 00:16:30:00 the gardens we tried to do that 00:16:30:00 00:16:32:00 at least every hour mix It up 00:16:32:00 00:16:33:00 and that that helps out a lot. 00:16:33:00 00:16:37:00 >> Designing your Garden for 00:16:37:00 00:16:37:00 comfort for access 00:16:37:00 00:16:37:00 the ergonomic tool thing Walt 00:16:37:00 00:16:39:00 will touch on a little Tools 00:16:39:00 00:16:40:00 that work better for us. 00:16:40:00 00:16:43:00 Alternative Planting methods 00:16:43:00 00:16:44:00 these are all topics will jump 00:16:44:00 00:16:45:00 into a little bit more but you 00:16:45:00 00:16:47:00 know Get rolling. 00:16:47:00 00:16:49:00 I'll get into that in a little 00:16:49:00 00:16:49:00 more detail as well. 00:16:49:00 00:16:51:00 But accessibility in 00:16:51:00 00:16:51:00 the gardens. 00:16:51:00 00:16:54:00 >> Joan here with was important 00:16:54:00 00:16:54:00 . 00:16:54:00 00:16:55:00 He's getting the traditional on 00:16:55:00 00:16:56:00 your knees gardening and 00:16:56:00 00:16:58:00 getting back up Impossible for 00:16:58:00 00:16:59:00 her. 00:16:59:00 00:17:00:00 So sitting on this 18 19 inch 00:17:00:00 00:17:02:00 wall She can garden behind her 00:17:02:00 00:17:03:00 so she typically will plant all 00:17:03:00 00:17:06:00 the inpatients within Reach of 00:17:06:00 00:17:07:00 this this wall which is which 00:17:07:00 00:17:07:00 is perfect. 00:17:07:00 00:17:10:00 So it's bringing the Garden up 00:17:10:00 00:17:10:00 to Joan not insisting that Joan 00:17:10:00 00:17:13:00 get down into the garden. 00:17:13:00 00:17:14:00 And so not all of us have 00:17:14:00 00:17:14:00 masonry. 00:17:14:00 00:17:17:00 >> You know, we don't Have 00:17:17:00 00:17:17:00 raised beds necessarily. 00:17:17:00 00:17:18:00 But I'm going to show you some 00:17:18:00 00:17:21:00 fun things that You can do at 00:17:21:00 00:17:22:00 home if you're ever in Chicago. 00:17:22:00 00:17:23:00 Do go to the Chicago Botanic 00:17:23:00 00:17:24:00 Garden. 00:17:24:00 00:17:25:00 The Buehler enabling garden is 00:17:25:00 00:17:25:00 dynamite. 00:17:25:00 00:17:27:00 Lots of great things Including 00:17:27:00 00:17:28:00 raised beds. 00:17:28:00 00:17:29:00 It's an all accessible garden 00:17:29:00 00:17:31:00 was developed Many years ago. 00:17:31:00 00:17:32:00 Absolutely gorgeous for all 00:17:32:00 00:17:36:00 visitors But it starts to hit 00:17:36:00 00:17:37:00 on some of the things we're 00:17:37:00 00:17:38:00 talking about today and that's 00:17:38:00 00:17:39:00 being Able to continue to 00:17:39:00 00:17:40:00 garden in situations that are 00:17:40:00 00:17:43:00 beyond what we Consider 00:17:43:00 00:17:43:00 traditional. 00:17:43:00 00:17:44:00 And again, that's our two 00:17:44:00 00:17:46:00 dimensional Gardening at ground 00:17:46:00 00:17:46:00 level. 00:17:46:00 00:17:50:00 Late season some beautiful 00:17:50:00 00:17:50:00 Raised beds. 00:17:50:00 00:17:51:00 A lot of the blue you see are 00:17:51:00 00:17:52:00 there are Astor's that were put 00:17:52:00 00:17:53:00 in Notice again accessibility 00:17:53:00 00:17:54:00 from a wheelchair sitting on 00:17:54:00 00:17:54:00 the wall. 00:17:54:00 00:17:57:00 I will say the designers of 00:17:57:00 00:17:58:00 the garden and chatting with 00:17:58:00 00:18:00:00 them One of the things they 00:18:00:00 00:18:01:00 wish they had modified was 00:18:01:00 00:18:03:00 the sharp corners on the beds 00:18:03:00 00:18:04:00 Where it were catching people. 00:18:04:00 00:18:07:00 So I've seen a lot of raised 00:18:07:00 00:18:08:00 Beds and other situations that 00:18:08:00 00:18:09:00 have have rounded corners and 00:18:09:00 00:18:12:00 notices Raised beds built for 00:18:12:00 00:18:13:00 different levels in wheelchair 00:18:13:00 00:18:16:00 accessible Where the chair can 00:18:16:00 00:18:17:00 roll underneath and three 00:18:17:00 00:18:17:00 different heights. 00:18:17:00 00:18:19:00 And the reason for that Is all 00:18:19:00 00:18:20:00 wheelchairs aren't the same 00:18:20:00 00:18:23:00 size and this are the Lowest 00:18:23:00 00:18:24:00 one accommodates kids in a 00:18:24:00 00:18:24:00 wheelchair. 00:18:24:00 00:18:27:00 That's what they look like 00:18:27:00 00:18:27:00 filled out very shallow soil 00:18:27:00 00:18:30:00 volume. 00:18:30:00 00:18:31:00 >> So you are a little limited 00:18:31:00 00:18:32:00 in what you're growing in there 00:18:32:00 00:18:33:00 but what a great way to be able 00:18:33:00 00:18:34:00 to Reach out and garden based 00:18:34:00 00:18:37:00 on your abilities corners, the raised beds 00:18:45:00 00:18:45:00 There's those again rounded 00:18:45:00 00:18:46:00 corners. 00:18:46:00 00:18:48:00 >> Drainage becomes Important. 00:18:48:00 00:18:49:00 These are essentially larger 00:18:49:00 00:18:52:00 containers and ultimately A 00:18:52:00 00:18:53:00 wide range of plants can be 00:18:53:00 00:18:54:00 grown and talk about 00:18:54:00 00:18:57:00 accessibility With a tomato one 00:18:57:00 00:18:57:00 asking overriding there are 00:18:57:00 00:18:59:00 trailing tomatoes I Think this 00:18:59:00 00:19:00:00 is just the big one that just 00:19:00:00 00:19:01:00 flopped over but you can still 00:19:01:00 00:19:04:00 still Get out the fruits. 00:19:04:00 00:19:04:00 >> Edgerton Hospital wonderful 00:19:04:00 00:19:07:00 healing garden. 00:19:07:00 00:19:08:00 It's great to see developments 00:19:08:00 00:19:10:00 at hospitals and Care centers 00:19:10:00 00:19:11:00 where there's a realization 00:19:11:00 00:19:14:00 there's the scientific proof 00:19:14:00 00:19:15:00 That patients looking out on 00:19:15:00 00:19:16:00 greenery in nature they heal 00:19:16:00 00:19:19:00 faster Which would make sense 00:19:19:00 00:19:19:00 to us as gardeners. 00:19:19:00 00:19:20:00 >> But having these wonderful 00:19:20:00 00:19:22:00 gardens not Only for patients 00:19:22:00 00:19:22:00 but for the visitors and 00:19:22:00 00:19:25:00 families of patients and staff 00:19:25:00 00:19:26:00 To recharge and get out there 00:19:26:00 00:19:27:00 as opposed to a picnic table 00:19:27:00 00:19:30:00 out In a lawn with a tree, 00:19:30:00 00:19:31:00 there's more elaborate gardens 00:19:31:00 00:19:33:00 that are being developed which 00:19:33:00 00:19:34:00 I think are worth it. 00:19:34:00 00:19:35:00 So all sorts of examples of 00:19:35:00 00:19:37:00 raised beds We won't have time. 00:19:37:00 00:19:38:00 It becomes a container talk 00:19:38:00 00:19:39:00 when we get into how to build 00:19:39:00 00:19:40:00 these Things. 00:19:40:00 00:19:41:00 But don't underestimate 00:19:41:00 00:19:44:00 the physics involved with 00:19:44:00 00:19:45:00 Proper construction. 00:19:45:00 00:19:47:00 These aren't necessarily their 00:19:47:00 00:19:48:00 Easier opportunities to garden 00:19:48:00 00:19:49:00 where mobility may be a 00:19:49:00 00:19:52:00 challenge But they're not 00:19:52:00 00:19:52:00 necessarily easier to construct 00:19:52:00 00:19:55:00 if you catch my Drift there's 00:19:55:00 00:19:56:00 the maintenance it's doing it 00:19:56:00 00:19:58:00 right from the get go. 00:19:58:00 00:19:59:00 >> So we'll talk about these 00:19:59:00 00:20:00:00 raised beds planters, 00:20:00:00 00:20:02:00 containers Etc. There's some 00:20:02:00 00:20:02:00 great opportunities in these 00:20:02:00 00:20:06:00 essentially all bringing 00:20:06:00 00:20:06:00 The garden up for us. 00:20:06:00 00:20:07:00 >> So a standard container on 00:20:07:00 00:20:10:00 the right some Nice elephant 00:20:10:00 00:20:10:00 ear colleagues notice 00:20:10:00 00:20:11:00 incidentally the reliance 00:20:11:00 00:20:13:00 simply on foliage Which is can 00:20:13:00 00:20:14:00 be a contributor through a huge 00:20:14:00 00:20:14:00 range of season. 00:20:14:00 00:20:18:00 >> I encourage you with all 00:20:18:00 00:20:19:00 your plants consider the value 00:20:19:00 00:20:20:00 of the longevity of Ornamental 00:20:20:00 00:20:21:00 any with foliage alone. 00:20:21:00 00:20:22:00 The flowers are certainly 00:20:22:00 00:20:24:00 excellent but This is a 24 inch 00:20:24:00 00:20:25:00 tall container so my mom has 00:20:25:00 00:20:28:00 some Bunnies so she's also 00:20:28:00 00:20:29:00 gardening and 24 inch tall 24 00:20:29:00 00:20:32:00 inch diameter Container. 00:20:32:00 00:20:33:00 She has about 12 of them and 00:20:33:00 00:20:35:00 that's her garden space. 00:20:35:00 00:20:36:00 >> So accessibility there's 00:20:36:00 00:20:36:00 less body strain using my mom 00:20:36:00 00:20:39:00 as the example She's able to 00:20:39:00 00:20:40:00 garden with a little bit of a 00:20:40:00 00:20:40:00 stoop for the garden. 00:20:40:00 00:20:43:00 We're a little Taller. 00:20:43:00 00:20:44:00 That becomes what we call belly 00:20:44:00 00:20:44:00 button height gardening. 00:20:44:00 00:20:46:00 You're just gardening right out 00:20:46:00 00:20:46:00 In front of you. 00:20:46:00 00:20:47:00 The nice thing about containers 00:20:47:00 00:20:50:00 though is the Control of 00:20:50:00 00:20:51:00 the soil, the drainage doing it 00:20:51:00 00:20:54:00 right again becomes important. 00:20:54:00 00:20:57:00 Erosion control some of this 00:20:57:00 00:20:57:00 Relates to the benefits again 00:20:57:00 00:20:58:00 of containers. 00:20:58:00 00:21:01:00 >> Pest avoidance This is a 00:21:01:00 00:21:02:00 separate topic really but in 00:21:02:00 00:21:02:00 essence elevating the plant 00:21:02:00 00:21:05:00 sometimes Keeps the critters 00:21:05:00 00:21:05:00 away. 00:21:05:00 00:21:09:00 But we found out how nimble 00:21:09:00 00:21:10:00 Wood chucks are and how much 00:21:10:00 00:21:10:00 they like sweet potato vine so 00:21:10:00 00:21:13:00 they'll They'll work those over 00:21:13:00 00:21:14:00 containers with extra space 00:21:14:00 00:21:16:00 simply Means think about we're 00:21:16:00 00:21:17:00 always thinking about open soil 00:21:17:00 00:21:20:00 two dimensional garden space We 00:21:20:00 00:21:20:00 can plant think about 00:21:20:00 00:21:21:00 nontraditional areas on your 00:21:21:00 00:21:24:00 deck, your patio, your front 00:21:24:00 00:21:24:00 stoop. 00:21:24:00 00:21:25:00 >> There's hard scape surfaces 00:21:25:00 00:21:27:00 that can accommodate containers 00:21:27:00 00:21:27:00 And expand your gardening 00:21:27:00 00:21:31:00 opportunities and increase Your 00:21:31:00 00:21:31:00 accessibility and certainly 00:21:31:00 00:21:35:00 what you can grow And a great 00:21:35:00 00:21:38:00 example at Rotary Gardens And 00:21:38:00 00:21:39:00 wonderful story the mother of 00:21:39:00 00:21:42:00 one of our ground staff members 00:21:42:00 00:21:43:00 Notice the slab of concrete so 00:21:43:00 00:21:44:00 she grew up having her own 00:21:44:00 00:21:47:00 garden And is in an assisted 00:21:47:00 00:21:47:00 care facility where she has 00:21:47:00 00:21:51:00 this Ten by ten slab of 00:21:51:00 00:21:51:00 concrete. 00:21:51:00 00:21:52:00 She can't garden anywhere else 00:21:52:00 00:21:53:00 on the property Which is 00:21:53:00 00:21:54:00 maintained by a private 00:21:54:00 00:21:54:00 company. 00:21:54:00 00:21:57:00 She can enjoy the view But she 00:21:57:00 00:21:58:00 was falling into a depression 00:21:58:00 00:22:00:00 about not being able to Get her 00:22:00:00 00:22:01:00 fix as I've said, you know, 00:22:01:00 00:22:02:00 with gardening. 00:22:02:00 00:22:04:00 So we built her this raised Bed 00:22:04:00 00:22:04:00 . 00:22:04:00 00:22:05:00 It's 10 inches deep, the soil 00:22:05:00 00:22:05:00 heavy duty. 00:22:05:00 00:22:09:00 >> Now Imagine you should 00:22:09:00 00:22:09:00 understand the wet weight 00:22:09:00 00:22:11:00 meaning when this is wet And 00:22:11:00 00:22:12:00 has plants in it it's not easy 00:22:12:00 00:22:13:00 to move. 00:22:13:00 00:22:16:00 So pickled permanent location 00:22:16:00 00:22:17:00 But needless to say she's 00:22:17:00 00:22:17:00 getting her fix because she can 00:22:17:00 00:22:20:00 walk right Outside, do her 00:22:20:00 00:22:23:00 thing replanted every year and 00:22:23:00 00:22:24:00 See it from inside as well and 00:22:24:00 00:22:25:00 opportunities like this and I 00:22:25:00 00:22:27:00 should Start by saying similar 00:22:27:00 00:22:28:00 situation in that she's not 00:22:28:00 00:22:31:00 getting Be getting down and 00:22:31:00 00:22:32:00 back up anymore in terms of 00:22:32:00 00:22:32:00 gardening. 00:22:32:00 00:22:34:00 So she Doing everything at 00:22:34:00 00:22:37:00 belly button height. 00:22:37:00 00:22:39:00 >> So with planters you got you 00:22:39:00 00:22:39:00 have to consider the dimensions 00:22:39:00 00:22:41:00 that's important Appropriate 00:22:41:00 00:22:42:00 materials at longevity 00:22:42:00 00:22:44:00 the materials becomes important 00:22:44:00 00:22:45:00 As a side note you'll see a lot 00:22:45:00 00:22:46:00 of raised beds and you know 00:22:46:00 00:22:49:00 they're all fairly Narrow and 00:22:49:00 00:22:49:00 the reason for that is you have 00:22:49:00 00:22:53:00 to consider reach so That when 00:22:53:00 00:22:53:00 you think about a taller 00:22:53:00 00:22:54:00 bellybutton height garden four 00:22:54:00 00:22:56:00 foot with its Typical because 00:22:56:00 00:22:57:00 it can be garden from both 00:22:57:00 00:22:59:00 sides the reach for adults is 00:22:59:00 00:23:00:00 About 24 inches. 00:23:00:00 00:23:01:00 >> So imagine if that were a 00:23:01:00 00:23:03:00 five foot wide bed. 00:23:03:00 00:23:03:00 That center foot is hard to 00:23:03:00 00:23:04:00 reach. 00:23:04:00 00:23:06:00 There's a bit of a stretch 00:23:06:00 00:23:07:00 Drainage becomes vital for 00:23:07:00 00:23:08:00 something like you see on 00:23:08:00 00:23:10:00 the left that's Allen 00:23:10:00 00:23:11:00 Centennial Gardens here in 00:23:11:00 00:23:12:00 the UW Madison campus. 00:23:12:00 00:23:14:00 Now they have a booth Here at 00:23:14:00 00:23:14:00 the expo as well appropriate 00:23:14:00 00:23:15:00 soil. 00:23:15:00 00:23:17:00 I don't want to turn this Into 00:23:17:00 00:23:18:00 a container talk but all too 00:23:18:00 00:23:22:00 often we don't consider 80 or 00:23:22:00 00:23:22:00 80 to 90 percent more success 00:23:22:00 00:23:25:00 with container gardening Is 00:23:25:00 00:23:26:00 proper soil and drainage 00:23:26:00 00:23:26:00 the plants is the icing on 00:23:26:00 00:23:29:00 the cake that That really is 00:23:29:00 00:23:30:00 the easy part overbuild 00:23:30:00 00:23:33:00 maintain For longevity and a 00:23:33:00 00:23:34:00 great example we have some 00:23:34:00 00:23:36:00 wonderful retired Carpenters so 00:23:36:00 00:23:37:00 when I'm seeing things like 00:23:37:00 00:23:37:00 this and gardening magazines I 00:23:37:00 00:23:40:00 just cut the photos They make 00:23:40:00 00:23:41:00 them that never rolled that 00:23:41:00 00:23:44:00 never rolled Just so you know 00:23:44:00 00:23:45:00 it was imagine the weight in 00:23:45:00 00:23:46:00 that thing you see the little 00:23:46:00 00:23:47:00 wheels The wheels are plastic 00:23:47:00 00:23:50:00 and already flattened out but 00:23:50:00 00:23:51:00 It was a nice deep container, 00:23:51:00 00:23:54:00 perfect drainage and Great and 00:23:54:00 00:23:55:00 we had volunteers that with 00:23:55:00 00:23:58:00 mobility challenges this was 00:23:58:00 00:23:58:00 Perfect for them to garden. 00:23:58:00 00:24:02:00 >> We built these little tiered 00:24:02:00 00:24:02:00 Planters not a lot of soil 00:24:02:00 00:24:03:00 volume in these but 00:24:03:00 00:24:05:00 accessibility. 00:24:05:00 00:24:06:00 So Greene's shallow rooted 00:24:06:00 00:24:09:00 crops of This could imagine 00:24:09:00 00:24:10:00 sowing lettuce in there and 00:24:10:00 00:24:12:00 having something like That 00:24:12:00 00:24:13:00 cutting back on that two or 00:24:13:00 00:24:13:00 three times and then Segway 00:24:13:00 00:24:16:00 going to some heat tolerant 00:24:16:00 00:24:17:00 Summer summer vegetable that 00:24:17:00 00:24:17:00 doesn't need a lot of soil 00:24:17:00 00:24:17:00 volume. 00:24:17:00 00:24:21:00 Now Imagine this on out on 00:24:21:00 00:24:21:00 the back patio against 00:24:21:00 00:24:22:00 the garage in an area where you 00:24:22:00 00:24:23:00 don't have Soil and being able 00:24:23:00 00:24:24:00 to get to this becomes 00:24:24:00 00:24:28:00 important and I tend to go on 00:24:28:00 00:24:28:00 tangents upon tangents but a 00:24:28:00 00:24:31:00 simple container is One of 00:24:31:00 00:24:32:00 the best ways to start a kid 00:24:32:00 00:24:32:00 gardening. 00:24:32:00 00:00:03:00 Having an identifiable space 00:00:03:00 00:00:04:00 That they can reach easily and 00:00:04:00 00:00:07:00 a lot of fun things Hot 00:00:07:00 00:00:08:00 peppers, a lot of herbs, 00:00:08:00 00:00:09:00 growing herbs needing perfect 00:00:09:00 00:00:11:00 drainage For the most part and 00:00:11:00 00:00:12:00 certainly a lot of heat and not 00:00:12:00 00:00:14:00 needing a ton of soil But some 00:00:14:00 00:00:15:00 dimensions to throw at you. 00:00:15:00 00:00:18:00 >> It's on your Slide list but 00:00:18:00 00:00:19:00 I mentioned the width 48 inches 00:00:19:00 00:00:21:00 wide. 00:00:21:00 00:00:22:00 I will say I'm not a huge fan 00:00:22:00 00:00:23:00 using tires for four plantings. 00:00:23:00 00:00:26:00 I Worry about chemicals 00:00:26:00 00:00:29:00 leaching out of tires but 30 To 00:00:29:00 00:00:30:00 36 inches is the belly button 00:00:30:00 00:00:32:00 height the standing access And 00:00:32:00 00:00:33:00 then there's some dimensions 00:00:33:00 00:00:33:00 for various wheelchair 00:00:33:00 00:00:37:00 accessibility that 18 to 19 to 00:00:37:00 00:00:37:00 24 inches tops is for sitting 00:00:37:00 00:00:40:00 and working And and in 00:00:40:00 00:00:43:00 wheelchair accessibility soil 00:00:43:00 00:00:44:00 That's becomes important. 00:00:44:00 00:00:44:00 >> The reason I mentioned that 00:00:44:00 00:00:46:00 is in our deepest containers We 00:00:46:00 00:00:47:00 have a three to four foot 00:00:47:00 00:00:47:00 container. 00:00:47:00 00:00:48:00 We're not necessarily filling 00:00:48:00 00:00:51:00 it entirely With soil. 00:00:51:00 00:00:52:00 If it's a raised bed that 00:00:52:00 00:00:52:00 connects to the ground it's 00:00:52:00 00:00:54:00 full of soil but Larger 00:00:54:00 00:00:55:00 containers that are movable we 00:00:55:00 00:00:58:00 always put 24 inches Soil. 00:00:58:00 00:00:58:00 So what's under there is is 00:00:58:00 00:01:02:00 rubble or something That drains 00:01:02:00 00:01:02:00 freely but fills some of 00:01:02:00 00:01:05:00 the volume of the pot. 00:01:05:00 00:01:06:00 >> So we do find 24 inches 00:01:06:00 00:01:07:00 adequate for almost everything 00:01:07:00 00:01:08:00 we're growing but just some 00:01:08:00 00:01:09:00 Examples to whet your appetite 00:01:09:00 00:01:10:00 on some of these things you can 00:01:10:00 00:01:13:00 purchase Things like this if 00:01:13:00 00:01:14:00 you're handy you can build them 00:01:14:00 00:01:14:00 again. 00:01:14:00 00:01:16:00 Choice of materials becomes 00:01:16:00 00:01:17:00 Important that drainage all too 00:01:17:00 00:01:20:00 often drainage is inadequate 00:01:20:00 00:01:21:00 And sometimes has to be 00:01:21:00 00:01:22:00 augmented later on is older 00:01:22:00 00:01:24:00 drainage holes fill. 00:01:24:00 00:01:24:00 Here's a fence think about 00:01:24:00 00:01:25:00 the ubiquitous eight foot tall 00:01:25:00 00:01:28:00 Menard style Fence. 00:01:28:00 00:01:29:00 >> You know it's a divider but 00:01:29:00 00:01:30:00 it may be the opportunity as a 00:01:30:00 00:01:32:00 backdrop Not only for other 00:01:32:00 00:01:33:00 types of plants but something 00:01:33:00 00:01:35:00 like this. 00:01:35:00 00:01:35:00 My criticism of this is having 00:01:35:00 00:01:36:00 a walk through those has to 00:01:36:00 00:01:40:00 Steven get to those Those herbs 00:01:40:00 00:01:42:00 But kind of a nifty use of 00:01:42:00 00:01:45:00 space some heavy duty Raised 00:01:45:00 00:01:45:00 beds. 00:01:45:00 00:01:46:00 >> Again something like this is 00:01:46:00 00:01:48:00 I'm not exaggerating when I say 00:01:48:00 00:01:49:00 Probably twenty five hundred 00:01:49:00 00:01:52:00 pounds A little workbench here 00:01:52:00 00:01:56:00 some of the raised Beds we 00:01:56:00 00:01:56:00 developed fifteen or sixteen 00:01:56:00 00:01:57:00 different raised beds and we 00:01:57:00 00:02:00:00 have a group Called the Green 00:02:00:00 00:02:01:00 Side Up and they have various 00:02:01:00 00:02:03:00 cognitive and physical 00:02:03:00 00:02:03:00 Impairments and so we've 00:02:03:00 00:02:04:00 developed various containers to 00:02:04:00 00:02:07:00 see How successful they are for 00:02:07:00 00:02:07:00 accessibility. 00:02:07:00 00:02:08:00 >> Something like this worked 00:02:08:00 00:02:10:00 out real well. 00:02:10:00 00:02:11:00 Notice how it tapers to a V in 00:02:11:00 00:02:12:00 the center the deepest portion 00:02:12:00 00:02:14:00 so We're putting deeper rooted 00:02:14:00 00:02:15:00 plants in the center I should 00:02:15:00 00:02:17:00 say our volunteers are picking 00:02:17:00 00:02:18:00 the Plants but ultimately this 00:02:18:00 00:02:20:00 also allows getting right Up 00:02:20:00 00:02:24:00 against the container Raised 00:02:24:00 00:02:24:00 beds with little sitting walls 00:02:24:00 00:02:28:00 as a side Note notice in 00:02:28:00 00:02:29:00 the back the PDC piping of 00:02:29:00 00:02:31:00 the colorful red and green Blue 00:02:31:00 00:02:32:00 that those are frameworks for 00:02:32:00 00:02:34:00 tomatoes that gardener has said 00:02:34:00 00:02:35:00 They've dictated the space 00:02:35:00 00:02:36:00 the tomatoes will take out take 00:02:36:00 00:02:39:00 up so They're training 00:02:39:00 00:02:39:00 indeterminate tomatoes which we 00:02:39:00 00:02:40:00 all know are floppy and cover a 00:02:40:00 00:02:43:00 lot of real estate. 00:02:43:00 00:02:44:00 >> They're saying this is your 00:02:44:00 00:02:44:00 space so they've increased air 00:02:44:00 00:02:46:00 circulation Between the plants. 00:02:46:00 00:02:47:00 They've kept the variety 00:02:47:00 00:02:48:00 separate and they can get in 00:02:48:00 00:02:50:00 between there to get The fruits 00:02:50:00 00:02:53:00 you can do that sort of thing. 00:02:53:00 00:02:54:00 >> Oh, this is a recycled 00:02:54:00 00:02:57:00 lumber put into raised beds And 00:02:57:00 00:02:58:00 a concrete area the concrete 00:02:58:00 00:03:00:00 you know some a slab like that 00:03:00:00 00:03:01:00 Is fairly expensive but fairly 00:03:01:00 00:03:04:00 easy to clean off as well In 00:03:04:00 00:03:05:00 over my travels just seeing a 00:03:05:00 00:03:06:00 lot of these in the situations 00:03:06:00 00:03:08:00 you're seeing Are typically at 00:03:08:00 00:03:09:00 gardens where they're 00:03:09:00 00:03:12:00 accommodating for volunteers Or 00:03:12:00 00:03:13:00 participants that again have 00:03:13:00 00:03:16:00 the mobility challenges and 00:03:16:00 00:03:17:00 Back to gardening as we age 00:03:17:00 00:03:17:00 this type of gardening might 00:03:17:00 00:03:19:00 become more attractive To us in 00:03:19:00 00:03:20:00 terms of certainly 00:03:20:00 00:03:24:00 accessibility And you can get 00:03:24:00 00:03:24:00 real fancy with something like 00:03:24:00 00:03:29:00 this Literally brick and mortar 00:03:29:00 00:03:29:00 . 00:03:29:00 00:03:30:00 >> I thought this was 00:03:30:00 00:03:30:00 interesting. 00:03:30:00 00:03:31:00 >> Imagine if you were on 00:03:31:00 00:03:33:00 the left side of this plant 00:03:33:00 00:03:34:00 Your gardening at belly button 00:03:34:00 00:03:35:00 height on the right side it's 00:03:35:00 00:03:37:00 wheelchair accessible. 00:03:37:00 00:03:38:00 There's a sitting bench there 00:03:38:00 00:03:39:00 and this is a all of that 00:03:39:00 00:03:41:00 recycled lumber Come an 00:03:41:00 00:03:42:00 interesting planter soil depth 00:03:42:00 00:03:44:00 seems a little limited But 00:03:44:00 00:03:45:00 ultimately an another 00:03:45:00 00:03:48:00 opportunity to consider This 00:03:48:00 00:03:49:00 was real interesting. 00:03:49:00 00:03:50:00 This actually rolls you can't 00:03:50:00 00:03:52:00 see the casters. 00:03:52:00 00:03:53:00 We'll keep this thing rolling. 00:03:53:00 00:03:54:00 But imagine this out on 00:03:54:00 00:03:55:00 the back deck or patio where 00:03:55:00 00:03:56:00 You're essentially planting 00:03:56:00 00:03:56:00 the center and you could be 00:03:56:00 00:03:59:00 entertaining or eating dinner. 00:03:59:00 00:04:00:00 You could be picking herbs 00:04:00:00 00:04:01:00 right out of the center that if 00:04:01:00 00:04:04:00 you liked It's only about half 00:04:04:00 00:04:04:00 full of soil. 00:04:04:00 00:04:05:00 There's only about 18 Inches of 00:04:05:00 00:04:09:00 soil in there. 00:04:09:00 00:04:10:00 >> Horse troughs, you know why 00:04:10:00 00:04:11:00 not? 00:04:11:00 00:04:13:00 Of course Ample drainage 00:04:13:00 00:04:14:00 becomes important and as a side 00:04:14:00 00:04:16:00 note always be wary first of 00:04:16:00 00:04:17:00 Courtesy whole you get in a 00:04:17:00 00:04:18:00 container when you buy it is 00:04:18:00 00:04:19:00 never enough for adequate 00:04:19:00 00:04:21:00 drainage So consider adding 00:04:21:00 00:04:21:00 more be careful drilling holes 00:04:21:00 00:04:25:00 into terracotta Ceramic you 00:04:25:00 00:04:25:00 wanna be careful with that but 00:04:25:00 00:04:27:00 understand sometimes when a 00:04:27:00 00:04:28:00 Container even with good 00:04:28:00 00:04:29:00 drainage holes sometimes will 00:04:29:00 00:04:31:00 create a suction effect And 00:04:31:00 00:04:32:00 hard pavement where water has a 00:04:32:00 00:04:35:00 hard time vacating that Space. 00:04:35:00 00:04:36:00 So shimmying up a container 00:04:36:00 00:04:36:00 just a little bit will allow 00:04:36:00 00:04:39:00 that water To vacate. 00:04:39:00 00:04:40:00 So again when this is watered 00:04:40:00 00:04:41:00 it drain it should be very 00:04:41:00 00:04:45:00 Sharp Now there's some dill in 00:04:45:00 00:04:46:00 the center if this is at 00:04:46:00 00:04:48:00 the Chicago Botanic Garden and 00:04:48:00 00:04:52:00 a rooftop garden Notice there's 00:04:52:00 00:04:53:00 a low brick wall here with just 00:04:53:00 00:04:55:00 a planter with all sorts of fun 00:04:55:00 00:04:55:00 Things going on. 00:04:55:00 00:04:56:00 >> So an imagined and keep 00:04:56:00 00:04:57:00 imagine yourself in these 00:04:57:00 00:04:59:00 situations Where admittedly for 00:04:59:00 00:05:00:00 myself it'd be real nice if 00:05:00:00 00:05:02:00 you're picking vegetables 00:05:02:00 00:05:03:00 Gardening just to be walking 00:05:03:00 00:05:06:00 along and doing it As opposed 00:05:06:00 00:05:07:00 to getting up and down although 00:05:07:00 00:05:08:00 you still want to keep limber 00:05:08:00 00:05:10:00 and continue to Do what we can. 00:05:10:00 00:05:11:00 A nice planter there Angstrom 00:05:11:00 00:05:14:00 area The trailer is a type of 00:05:14:00 00:05:17:00 lotus. 00:05:17:00 00:05:18:00 >> There's a lot of these 00:05:18:00 00:05:18:00 prefab containers. 00:05:18:00 00:05:19:00 >> This is a rolling situation 00:05:19:00 00:05:21:00 with Planters on both sides. 00:05:21:00 00:05:22:00 My criticism of it is it's 00:05:22:00 00:05:24:00 extremely Shallow containers. 00:05:24:00 00:05:25:00 There's not a lot of soil 00:05:25:00 00:05:25:00 involved. 00:05:25:00 00:05:28:00 Keep in mind Sun exposure 00:05:28:00 00:05:29:00 becomes important because there 00:05:29:00 00:05:29:00 were sun loving Arabs on both 00:05:29:00 00:05:32:00 sides of this. 00:05:32:00 00:05:33:00 So if I had it at home I'd be 00:05:33:00 00:05:34:00 rotating it to make sure 00:05:34:00 00:05:35:00 everything's getting Ample sun 00:05:35:00 00:05:36:00 drainage becomes important. 00:05:36:00 00:05:39:00 All those containers have to 00:05:39:00 00:05:39:00 Drain and they're likely 00:05:39:00 00:05:40:00 draining into the container 00:05:40:00 00:05:40:00 below them. 00:05:40:00 00:05:42:00 So the real danger Is 00:05:42:00 00:05:43:00 the lowest containers getting 00:05:43:00 00:05:48:00 soggy, no traditional plant 00:05:48:00 00:05:48:00 civil space here. 00:05:48:00 00:05:50:00 >> But this is a metal 00:05:50:00 00:05:50:00 Contraption. 00:05:50:00 00:05:51:00 It's a three tiered planter. 00:05:51:00 00:05:53:00 Notice eggplant, salvia. 00:05:53:00 00:05:54:00 There's all sorts of wonderful 00:05:54:00 00:05:57:00 plants coming out of these So 00:05:57:00 00:05:58:00 vertical planters this may not 00:05:58:00 00:05:58:00 be reality for all of us. 00:05:58:00 00:06:00:00 But first of all, plants Don't 00:06:00:00 00:06:01:00 mind growing sideways out of 00:06:01:00 00:06:01:00 vertical situations. 00:06:01:00 00:06:05:00 I think many of You know this 00:06:05:00 00:06:05:00 this is a plant at the Chicago 00:06:05:00 00:06:06:00 Botanic Garden. 00:06:06:00 00:06:08:00 There's A pillar phonemes are 00:06:08:00 00:06:09:00 scented geraniums and 00:06:09:00 00:06:09:00 assertions all sorts of fun 00:06:09:00 00:06:11:00 stuff in their. 00:06:11:00 00:06:12:00 This is in that buehler 00:06:12:00 00:06:15:00 enabling garden, by the way, 00:06:15:00 00:06:16:00 Where you can we can get Adam 00:06:16:00 00:06:16:00 and again. 00:06:16:00 00:06:20:00 Now these The face of this 00:06:20:00 00:06:20:00 folds out. 00:06:20:00 00:06:21:00 >> It's re lined with plastic 00:06:21:00 00:06:22:00 which is held in by mesh. 00:06:22:00 00:06:23:00 The soil is redone every year. 00:06:23:00 00:06:24:00 The drainage is is absolutely 00:06:24:00 00:06:26:00 perfect. 00:06:26:00 00:06:27:00 So keep that in mind. 00:06:27:00 00:06:31:00 I've shown this over The past. 00:06:31:00 00:06:31:00 Some of you have seen this but 00:06:31:00 00:06:32:00 I'll dove in. 00:06:32:00 00:06:35:00 This is so We don't all have a 00:06:35:00 00:06:36:00 10 foot brick wall to say I'm 00:06:36:00 00:06:36:00 going to put one of these up. 00:06:36:00 00:06:38:00 Keeping in mind What I said 00:06:38:00 00:06:38:00 earlier, it's not four screws 00:06:38:00 00:06:41:00 and hoping for the best. 00:06:41:00 00:06:42:00 This is a shot in May where 00:06:42:00 00:06:44:00 you're seeing a partially as 00:06:44:00 00:06:45:00 The green and then pansies and 00:06:45:00 00:06:46:00 then I came back in summer and 00:06:46:00 00:06:49:00 they transitioned To time and 00:06:49:00 00:06:49:00 trailing oregano as the light 00:06:49:00 00:06:52:00 pink you're seeing there. 00:06:52:00 00:06:53:00 So whether you're taking these 00:06:53:00 00:06:54:00 herbs for use or not is 00:06:54:00 00:06:56:00 secondary. 00:06:56:00 00:06:57:00 Trailing oregano incidentally 00:06:57:00 00:06:58:00 is not the best culinary regen 00:06:58:00 00:07:00:00 so That same planter with 00:07:00:00 00:07:00:00 spring greens. 00:07:00:00 00:07:04:00 And again What a great 00:07:04:00 00:07:04:00 approach. 00:07:04:00 00:07:05:00 So accessibility is there for 00:07:05:00 00:07:07:00 most people And there's a lot 00:07:07:00 00:07:08:00 of plants we can start putting 00:07:08:00 00:07:08:00 in hanging baskets. 00:07:08:00 00:07:11:00 And my younger Daughter when 00:07:11:00 00:07:11:00 she was younger three or four 00:07:11:00 00:07:12:00 she started planting baskets 00:07:12:00 00:07:15:00 that We would hang with shorter 00:07:15:00 00:07:16:00 shepherd's hook hooks trailing 00:07:16:00 00:07:18:00 tomatoes, things Like that. 00:07:18:00 00:07:19:00 So she was able to to get Adam 00:07:19:00 00:07:21:00 and it elevated the plants Here 00:07:21:00 00:07:22:00 you see strawberries. 00:07:22:00 00:07:22:00 These are perennials. 00:07:22:00 00:07:25:00 So you're not Leaving this 00:07:25:00 00:07:25:00 basket up over the winter 00:07:25:00 00:07:26:00 months. 00:07:26:00 00:07:26:00 Something else has to happen, 00:07:26:00 00:07:27:00 of course. 00:07:27:00 00:07:29:00 But There's a lot of 00:07:29:00 00:07:30:00 development in shorter vine 00:07:30:00 00:07:30:00 linked vegetables that are 00:07:30:00 00:07:32:00 great For raised beds. 00:07:32:00 00:07:33:00 Keep thinking short vine links 00:07:33:00 00:07:36:00 zucchini, squash, pumpkins. 00:07:36:00 00:07:37:00 So they're not taking up a huge 00:07:37:00 00:07:39:00 amount of square footage but 00:07:39:00 00:07:40:00 Still have productivity. 00:07:40:00 00:07:41:00 So the general comment is even 00:07:41:00 00:07:43:00 if you're bringing The garden 00:07:43:00 00:07:43:00 up into smaller situations, 00:07:43:00 00:07:47:00 smaller square footage, there 00:07:47:00 00:07:48:00 are more compact forms of many 00:07:48:00 00:07:48:00 of the plants you enjoy that 00:07:48:00 00:07:50:00 can be shoehorned In there. 00:07:50:00 00:07:51:00 This is cucumber short finally 00:07:51:00 00:07:56:00 cucumber called Pickles And 00:07:56:00 00:07:56:00 the trailing tomatoes are 00:07:56:00 00:07:57:00 wonderful. 00:07:57:00 00:08:00:00 >> I mentioned indeterminate 00:08:00:00 00:08:00:00 Tomatoes earlier. 00:08:00:00 00:08:01:00 Those are tomatoes that produce 00:08:01:00 00:08:04:00 over a long period Of time. 00:08:04:00 00:08:05:00 These are the trailing tomatoes 00:08:05:00 00:08:07:00 are mostly determinate meaning 00:08:07:00 00:08:07:00 They'll ripen up roughly 00:08:07:00 00:08:08:00 the same time you'll get a lot 00:08:08:00 00:08:11:00 of tomatoes at once and They 00:08:11:00 00:08:12:00 won't go the distance typically 00:08:12:00 00:08:15:00 into September but Still 00:08:15:00 00:08:15:00 elevating in a situation where 00:08:15:00 00:08:16:00 maybe there's not traditional 00:08:16:00 00:08:19:00 soil Or get right out there and 00:08:19:00 00:08:19:00 pick those tomatoes. 00:08:19:00 00:08:21:00 So back to The grunting and 00:08:21:00 00:08:25:00 groaning. 00:08:25:00 00:08:26:00 This is the Wisconsin Illinois 00:08:26:00 00:08:26:00 chapter of the North American 00:08:26:00 00:08:29:00 Rock Garden Society. 00:08:29:00 00:08:30:00 >> They have a booth here. 00:08:30:00 00:08:31:00 You'll see they're hyper too 00:08:31:00 00:08:32:00 four troughs and all sorts of 00:08:32:00 00:08:32:00 fun things. 00:08:32:00 00:08:33:00 Some of these folks are here 00:08:33:00 00:08:33:00 today. 00:08:33:00 00:08:34:00 >> Now this is the Alpine 00:08:34:00 00:08:37:00 Garden and The old, you know, 00:08:37:00 00:08:37:00 elbow grease getting down there 00:08:37:00 00:08:40:00 and weeding and the worst Soils 00:08:40:00 00:08:41:00 and I assure you it's the worst 00:08:41:00 00:08:41:00 of soils. 00:08:41:00 00:08:44:00 This becomes Difficult and I'm 00:08:44:00 00:08:45:00 not here to advocate the use of 00:08:45:00 00:08:47:00 herbicides in lieu of of 00:08:47:00 00:08:47:00 Physically removing weeds. 00:08:47:00 00:08:49:00 But we all know healthy gardens 00:08:49:00 00:08:52:00 and Healthy plants can start to 00:08:52:00 00:08:52:00 hopefully compete with those 00:08:52:00 00:08:55:00 weeds and minimize Their impact 00:08:55:00 00:08:55:00 on our gardens. 00:08:55:00 00:08:56:00 But again, the old school 00:08:56:00 00:08:58:00 gardening isn't Going to be 00:08:58:00 00:08:59:00 going away getting down and 00:08:59:00 00:09:00:00 there's some weeding here among 00:09:00:00 00:09:03:00 spring bulbs That are still yet 00:09:03:00 00:09:03:00 to go dormant. 00:09:03:00 00:09:05:00 This is here at Rotary Gardens 00:09:05:00 00:09:06:00 , a kids group. 00:09:06:00 00:09:09:00 And what was fun about these 00:09:09:00 00:09:10:00 Seventh graders many had never 00:09:10:00 00:09:10:00 planted before. 00:09:10:00 00:09:11:00 So it was great to get him out 00:09:11:00 00:09:11:00 there. 00:09:11:00 00:09:13:00 Show him how to do it and have 00:09:13:00 00:09:14:00 them returned to see what 00:09:14:00 00:09:16:00 happened with this Border. 00:09:16:00 00:09:17:00 But just showing you some of 00:09:17:00 00:09:18:00 the traditional gardening which 00:09:18:00 00:09:20:00 you're all aware of Some great 00:09:20:00 00:09:23:00 volunteers at Rotary Bev on 00:09:23:00 00:09:24:00 the Left not as limber as Ron 00:09:24:00 00:09:24:00 her husband. 00:09:24:00 00:09:25:00 >> So Ron, does the standing 00:09:25:00 00:09:27:00 work in Bev works what she can 00:09:27:00 00:09:28:00 reach from the wall again 18 to 00:09:28:00 00:09:30:00 19 inches. 00:09:30:00 00:09:31:00 So she takes care of 00:09:31:00 00:09:32:00 the weeding and planting along 00:09:32:00 00:09:34:00 that edge. 00:09:34:00 00:09:35:00 And there's Glenna who I showed 00:09:35:00 00:09:37:00 earlier, Glenn up. 00:09:37:00 00:09:38:00 There's no getting down and 00:09:38:00 00:09:38:00 back up. 00:09:38:00 00:09:39:00 So she's had this sitting bench 00:09:39:00 00:09:41:00 with her for Years. 00:09:41:00 00:09:43:00 And from that she can do a lot 00:09:43:00 00:09:43:00 of gardening. 00:09:43:00 00:09:44:00 I do want to mention These 00:09:44:00 00:09:45:00 benches which I think are 00:09:45:00 00:09:45:00 exceptional. 00:09:45:00 00:09:49:00 Not only can you sit on As you 00:09:49:00 00:09:49:00 see Glenda doing here 00:09:49:00 00:09:50:00 previously but what you're not 00:09:50:00 00:09:53:00 seeing In this image is if you 00:09:53:00 00:09:54:00 flip it over there's a pad 00:09:54:00 00:09:54:00 underneath. 00:09:54:00 00:09:55:00 You can actually use it as a 00:09:55:00 00:09:56:00 kneeling Pad. 00:09:56:00 00:09:57:00 And what our legs right now 00:09:57:00 00:09:57:00 become handles to allow you to 00:09:57:00 00:10:00:00 get down Back up and I believe 00:10:00:00 00:10:01:00 I have some more images for 00:10:01:00 00:10:01:00 you. 00:10:01:00 00:10:04:00 And again the talk Next door. 00:10:04:00 00:10:05:00 I'm sure we'll bring that up as 00:10:05:00 00:10:05:00 well. 00:10:05:00 00:10:07:00 Again, that belly button right 00:10:07:00 00:10:08:00 now here putting up some plants 00:10:08:00 00:10:11:00 but So much easier than doing 00:10:11:00 00:10:12:00 it at ground level. 00:10:12:00 00:10:15:00 So not all tours, tools Are 00:10:15:00 00:10:15:00 considered created equally. 00:10:15:00 00:10:16:00 We know that price is usually 00:10:16:00 00:10:18:00 an indicator Quality. 00:10:18:00 00:10:19:00 The lifetime warranty is great. 00:10:19:00 00:10:22:00 This is I was in England For 00:10:22:00 00:10:22:00 quite some time and this was 00:10:22:00 00:10:23:00 neat to see these old school 00:10:23:00 00:10:24:00 tools although they weren't 00:10:24:00 00:10:26:00 built Necessarily for comfort 00:10:26:00 00:10:27:00 but the longevity thing was 00:10:27:00 00:10:30:00 there caring For investment is 00:10:30:00 00:10:30:00 imperative. 00:10:30:00 00:10:33:00 And at Rotary Gardens When we 00:10:33:00 00:10:34:00 had the time we were constantly 00:10:34:00 00:10:35:00 sharpening oiling Sharpening, 00:10:35:00 00:10:37:00 oiling and doing whatever we 00:10:37:00 00:10:38:00 Could to prolong the longevity 00:10:38:00 00:10:39:00 of these tools. 00:10:39:00 00:10:40:00 >> So you consider what they're 00:10:40:00 00:10:42:00 made of, get them in your hands 00:10:42:00 00:10:43:00 and go through the motions that 00:10:43:00 00:10:44:00 becomes important to see 00:10:44:00 00:10:46:00 the comfort And do know that 00:10:46:00 00:10:47:00 the way you've been 00:10:47:00 00:10:47:00 traditionally using rakes and 00:10:47:00 00:10:49:00 shovels the way Tools are meant 00:10:49:00 00:10:50:00 to be used they have to serve a 00:10:50:00 00:10:50:00 function for us. 00:10:50:00 00:10:53:00 But The way our bodies are 00:10:53:00 00:10:54:00 engaging those tools is not 00:10:54:00 00:10:57:00 necessarily conducive to I 00:10:57:00 00:10:57:00 should say it's conducive to 00:10:57:00 00:11:00:00 more strain And it should be. 00:11:00:00 00:11:01:00 >> So consider that comfort and 00:11:01:00 00:11:02:00 fit of these things. 00:11:02:00 00:11:04:00 So the modifications might 00:11:04:00 00:11:08:00 include a change in grips To 00:11:08:00 00:11:08:00 take into account the different 00:11:08:00 00:11:09:00 user groups that might be using 00:11:09:00 00:11:09:00 them. 00:11:09:00 00:11:12:00 Notice the green handle tools 00:11:12:00 00:11:12:00 are just the arc in those is 00:11:12:00 00:11:15:00 less strain on your wrist When 00:11:15:00 00:11:15:00 you're planting. 00:11:15:00 00:11:16:00 We had a grant for ergonomic 00:11:16:00 00:11:19:00 tools and They were a tough 00:11:19:00 00:11:20:00 sell to our volunteers because 00:11:20:00 00:11:20:00 they looked a little different 00:11:20:00 00:11:22:00 than what they know As a trial 00:11:22:00 00:11:23:00 or a shovel or what have you. 00:11:23:00 00:11:26:00 >> Now they're some of The most 00:11:26:00 00:11:27:00 popular tools for particular 00:11:27:00 00:11:29:00 older volunteers so Ergonomic 00:11:29:00 00:11:29:00 tools are important. 00:11:29:00 00:11:33:00 There are some old school tools 00:11:33:00 00:11:33:00 In England. 00:11:33:00 00:11:37:00 Some of those older Than all of 00:11:37:00 00:11:38:00 us in the room. 00:11:38:00 00:11:38:00 It's a shot. 00:11:38:00 00:11:40:00 I took it as Expo A couple of 00:11:40:00 00:11:41:00 years ago. 00:11:41:00 00:11:42:00 Fisker is being a nice company 00:11:42:00 00:11:44:00 but you know again, I 00:11:44:00 00:11:45:00 understand what these tools can 00:11:45:00 00:11:46:00 do for you and take them 00:11:46:00 00:11:48:00 through the motions. 00:11:48:00 00:11:49:00 Chicago Botanic has a nice 00:11:49:00 00:11:51:00 display of some different tools 00:11:51:00 00:11:51:00 . 00:11:51:00 00:11:52:00 Notice those on the far left. 00:11:52:00 00:11:53:00 There's tools that have 00:11:53:00 00:11:55:00 lengthening handles. 00:11:55:00 00:11:56:00 You can adjust the handle 00:11:56:00 00:11:56:00 length for comfort instead of 00:11:56:00 00:11:59:00 adjusting your body for Given 00:11:59:00 00:11:59:00 length. 00:11:59:00 00:12:00:00 Notice that large shovel 00:12:00:00 00:12:03:00 the adaptations Instead of 00:12:03:00 00:12:04:00 the traditional holding 00:12:04:00 00:12:04:00 the shovel. 00:12:04:00 00:12:07:00 Imagine holding As you normally 00:12:07:00 00:12:08:00 would but look at add ons 00:12:08:00 00:12:08:00 the handles that have been 00:12:08:00 00:12:10:00 added. 00:12:10:00 00:12:11:00 So a lot of these again have 00:12:11:00 00:12:12:00 additional benefit with less 00:12:12:00 00:12:14:00 strain On the body. 00:12:14:00 00:12:15:00 And this is the gang that will 00:12:15:00 00:12:17:00 be speaking next store Rotary 00:12:17:00 00:12:18:00 Gardens for four or five years 00:12:18:00 00:12:19:00 as hosted a horticultural 00:12:19:00 00:12:21:00 theories Therapy symposium and 00:12:21:00 00:12:22:00 that lifelong gardening 00:12:22:00 00:12:22:00 committee has brought a 00:12:22:00 00:12:26:00 wonderful Assortment of tools 00:12:26:00 00:12:26:00 and it's been eureka moments 00:12:26:00 00:12:27:00 for everyone as they're using 00:12:27:00 00:12:29:00 him and Saying these are really 00:12:29:00 00:12:29:00 comfortable. 00:12:29:00 00:12:30:00 I can I can see why this would 00:12:30:00 00:12:33:00 cause Less strain on my body. 00:12:33:00 00:12:34:00 And notice the ladies holding 00:12:34:00 00:12:36:00 different types Of trials and 00:12:36:00 00:12:37:00 I'll show a little bit more of 00:12:37:00 00:12:39:00 an example of These tools 00:12:39:00 00:12:40:00 whether it's modifying an 00:12:40:00 00:12:41:00 existing tool, maybe a favorite 00:12:41:00 00:12:44:00 tool That you have or 00:12:44:00 00:12:44:00 purchasing something 00:12:44:00 00:12:46:00 specifically Pillage. 00:12:46:00 00:12:47:00 This off the Internet and I'm 00:12:47:00 00:12:50:00 not promoting this specifically 00:12:50:00 00:12:51:00 But consider a standard rake in 00:12:51:00 00:12:52:00 how you're holding it. 00:12:52:00 00:12:55:00 First of all With the narrow 00:12:55:00 00:12:55:00 wooden handle or plastic you're 00:12:55:00 00:12:57:00 there's a lot of grip is your 00:12:57:00 00:12:58:00 You know as you're pulling on 00:12:58:00 00:12:58:00 this. 00:12:58:00 00:12:59:00 Notice the handles your your 00:12:59:00 00:13:02:00 hands Are held at 90 degrees as 00:13:02:00 00:13:03:00 opposed to adjusting your wrist 00:13:03:00 00:13:06:00 so the snake Rake is putting 00:13:06:00 00:13:07:00 the strain a lot less strain on 00:13:07:00 00:13:09:00 your wrists and there's ways 00:13:09:00 00:13:10:00 Modifying rakes and even just 00:13:10:00 00:13:11:00 getting some padding on 00:13:11:00 00:13:13:00 the handle Is something that's 00:13:13:00 00:13:13:00 better for you. 00:13:13:00 00:13:14:00 >> Think about if you're done 00:13:14:00 00:13:17:00 gardening And you're just like 00:13:17:00 00:13:18:00 wow, my hands are really 00:13:18:00 00:13:18:00 hurting. 00:13:18:00 00:13:20:00 >> Sometimes that's Inevitable 00:13:20:00 00:13:21:00 but we want to again increase 00:13:21:00 00:13:24:00 the longevity Of our of our 00:13:24:00 00:13:25:00 bodies out in the garden. 00:13:25:00 00:13:28:00 >> So Some excuse me some 00:13:28:00 00:13:32:00 curved handles Just checking 00:13:32:00 00:13:32:00 time here. 00:13:32:00 00:13:32:00 >> Good. 00:13:32:00 00:13:35:00 >> That's an Example of some of 00:13:35:00 00:13:36:00 what you can pre purchase a 00:13:36:00 00:13:36:00 little bit of padding there. 00:13:36:00 00:13:39:00 >> But if You think about how 00:13:39:00 00:13:39:00 you traditionally hold your 00:13:39:00 00:13:41:00 hand on a trial, this is just a 00:13:41:00 00:13:43:00 lot less Strain in terms of 00:13:43:00 00:13:44:00 the rotation of your wrist. 00:13:44:00 00:13:46:00 >> The easy grip Tools these 00:13:46:00 00:13:47:00 are the toughest sell at Rotary 00:13:47:00 00:13:47:00 Gardens because people are like 00:13:47:00 00:13:48:00 I'm not I don't want to hold a 00:13:48:00 00:13:50:00 trial Like that but holding a 00:13:50:00 00:13:53:00 trial like that is so much less 00:13:53:00 00:13:54:00 Strain on your and your wrist 00:13:54:00 00:13:55:00 as you're digging and you get 00:13:55:00 00:13:57:00 used to it after a while. 00:13:57:00 00:13:58:00 >> But think about how you're 00:13:58:00 00:13:58:00 rotating your hand for 00:13:58:00 00:14:01:00 the trial in the strain Along 00:14:01:00 00:14:01:00 the wrist that becomes tougher 00:14:01:00 00:14:02:00 for all of us. 00:14:02:00 00:14:05:00 Without Doubt. 00:14:05:00 00:14:05:00 So ergonomic tools incidentally 00:14:05:00 00:14:07:00 exist for all different fields 00:14:07:00 00:14:08:00 Not just gardening but it's 00:14:08:00 00:14:09:00 exciting to see 00:14:09:00 00:14:11:00 the developments in What's 00:14:11:00 00:14:11:00 happening here. 00:14:11:00 00:14:15:00 >> There's some with an 00:14:15:00 00:14:19:00 additional risk support There 00:14:19:00 00:14:20:00 is an example of holding it so 00:14:20:00 00:14:22:00 that seems like That seems like 00:14:22:00 00:14:23:00 a lot of hardware to dig a 00:14:23:00 00:14:23:00 hole. 00:14:23:00 00:14:25:00 >> But if this person has 00:14:25:00 00:14:26:00 Trouble holding a traditional 00:14:26:00 00:14:27:00 trial this might be the way to 00:14:27:00 00:14:27:00 do it. 00:14:27:00 00:14:30:00 And when we talk about 00:14:30:00 00:14:30:00 Continuing the garden trial 00:14:30:00 00:14:33:00 work is part of it is we plant 00:14:33:00 00:14:34:00 So do consider that the easy 00:14:34:00 00:14:37:00 grip add to adaptation. 00:14:37:00 00:14:38:00 Here's a garden rake and you 00:14:38:00 00:14:38:00 saw this earlier with a large 00:14:38:00 00:14:39:00 shovel at Chicago Botanic 00:14:39:00 00:14:41:00 Garden Where you can actually 00:14:41:00 00:14:42:00 buy and secure additional 00:14:42:00 00:14:45:00 handles to the orientation That 00:14:45:00 00:14:46:00 you like and imagine yourself 00:14:46:00 00:14:46:00 going through the motions of 00:14:46:00 00:14:48:00 the rake by Itself again with 00:14:48:00 00:14:49:00 both your your wrists slightly 00:14:49:00 00:14:52:00 angled and The strain and then 00:14:52:00 00:14:53:00 going to a 90 degree 00:14:53:00 00:14:56:00 arrangement You actually can 00:14:56:00 00:14:57:00 put more torque into the rake 00:14:57:00 00:14:58:00 in terms of of pulling and 00:14:58:00 00:15:01:00 pushing And to me why did we 00:15:01:00 00:15:03:00 why didn't we really realize 00:15:03:00 00:15:04:00 This 40 years ago, you know, 00:15:04:00 00:15:07:00 not endorsing again Trade names 00:15:07:00 00:15:08:00 but the radius set of tools are 00:15:08:00 00:15:11:00 excellent again for that slight 00:15:11:00 00:15:12:00 Curvature and even a shovel 00:15:12:00 00:15:15:00 like this With a circular 00:15:15:00 00:15:16:00 backing as opposed to just a 00:15:16:00 00:15:18:00 straight Handled end. 00:15:18:00 00:15:19:00 >> Think about a straight 00:15:19:00 00:15:20:00 handled end with any long 00:15:20:00 00:15:23:00 handle Tool your backhand is 00:15:23:00 00:15:25:00 has to grip quite strongly and 00:15:25:00 00:15:26:00 A lot of the force you're using 00:15:26:00 00:15:27:00 in pushing a tool goes right 00:15:27:00 00:15:29:00 through the wrists As opposed 00:15:29:00 00:15:30:00 to having a hand at a 90 degree 00:15:30:00 00:15:33:00 angle on the back And I'm not 00:15:33:00 00:15:34:00 an occupational or physical 00:15:34:00 00:15:36:00 therapist so hopefully I'm 00:15:36:00 00:15:37:00 giving you the right impression 00:15:37:00 00:15:40:00 on how these can can benefit At 00:15:40:00 00:15:41:00 Holbrook Botanical Gardens. 00:15:41:00 00:15:42:00 >> Nice to see how their tools 00:15:42:00 00:15:44:00 organization Is superior here. 00:15:44:00 00:15:48:00 A lot of those again And that's 00:15:48:00 00:15:48:00 not atypical for tools to have 00:15:48:00 00:15:53:00 that type of Backing but it 00:15:53:00 00:15:54:00 sure helps in the Old-Fashioned 00:15:54:00 00:15:56:00 kneeling pad the Number of to 00:15:56:00 00:15:56:00 my 21 years at Rotary Gardens 00:15:56:00 00:15:59:00 probably 4000 times I said 00:15:59:00 00:16:00:00 The staff or volunteers why 00:16:00:00 00:16:00:00 don't you have a kneeling pad? 00:16:00:00 00:16:03:00 Oh I'm I'm okay. 00:16:03:00 00:16:03:00 I'm okay. 00:16:03:00 00:16:04:00 I was cocky about it. 00:16:04:00 00:16:07:00 My 20s and 30s to kneeling you 00:16:07:00 00:16:10:00 know a kneeling pad is Minimal 00:16:10:00 00:16:11:00 you can do for really taking 00:16:11:00 00:16:12:00 some of the stress off of your 00:16:12:00 00:16:14:00 knees In whether it's ground 00:16:14:00 00:16:17:00 level or certainly concrete 00:16:17:00 00:16:18:00 Grass absolutely imperative. 00:16:18:00 00:16:20:00 And here's another example Of 00:16:20:00 00:16:21:00 one of those fun arrangements. 00:16:21:00 00:16:22:00 >> What you don't see in here, 00:16:22:00 00:16:25:00 by the way, is A little storage 00:16:25:00 00:16:25:00 compartment as well where you 00:16:25:00 00:16:26:00 can put some tools. 00:16:26:00 00:16:28:00 >> But imagine sitting You 00:16:28:00 00:16:29:00 could be sitting this is only 00:16:29:00 00:16:30:00 18 inches tall so you're 00:16:30:00 00:16:32:00 squatting pretty low. 00:16:32:00 00:16:33:00 But to Glenn as example, she 00:16:33:00 00:16:33:00 would sit on something like 00:16:33:00 00:16:36:00 this and be able to Reach and 00:16:36:00 00:16:36:00 garden and do her thing but 00:16:36:00 00:16:39:00 then you can flip it And 00:16:39:00 00:16:40:00 there's at kneeling pad in 00:16:40:00 00:16:43:00 the center so that Those leg 00:16:43:00 00:16:43:00 handles as I mentioned earlier 00:16:43:00 00:16:47:00 become arm handles And to 00:16:47:00 00:16:47:00 handle so you can lower 00:16:47:00 00:16:48:00 yourself down and push yourself 00:16:48:00 00:16:50:00 back up. 00:16:50:00 00:16:51:00 And we bought five or six of 00:16:51:00 00:16:51:00 these at Rotary Gardens and 00:16:51:00 00:16:53:00 they're constantly In use 00:16:53:00 00:16:56:00 constantly And there's Glenna 00:16:56:00 00:17:00:00 doing her thing. 00:17:00:00 00:17:01:00 >> When I mentioned get Roland 00:17:01:00 00:17:03:00 earlier there You know 00:17:03:00 00:17:04:00 the wheel was invented for a 00:17:04:00 00:17:04:00 reason and whether it's good 00:17:04:00 00:17:07:00 old fashioned Radio Flyer or 00:17:07:00 00:17:10:00 something else moving Materials 00:17:10:00 00:17:11:00 out into the garden back and 00:17:11:00 00:17:11:00 forth. 00:17:11:00 00:17:14:00 Don't keep relying On your back 00:17:14:00 00:17:14:00 using an example. 00:17:14:00 00:17:18:00 I mean taking care of your Back 00:17:18:00 00:17:19:00 obviously is vital in in my 00:17:19:00 00:17:19:00 younger years cutting down a 00:17:19:00 00:17:21:00 crab Apple and doing one of 00:17:21:00 00:17:22:00 the traditional. 00:17:22:00 00:17:25:00 Yeah I bet I can carry that And 00:17:25:00 00:17:25:00 having a large log in and 00:17:25:00 00:17:26:00 throwing it over my shoulder 00:17:26:00 00:17:28:00 wrenching My back and you know 00:17:28:00 00:17:29:00 15 years of agony dealing with 00:17:29:00 00:17:32:00 that somebody You've gone 00:17:32:00 00:17:33:00 through similar issues where 00:17:33:00 00:17:33:00 you know you're constantly feel 00:17:33:00 00:17:36:00 like you're in physical Therapy 00:17:36:00 00:17:36:00 . 00:17:36:00 00:17:37:00 But if there's the opportunity 00:17:37:00 00:17:40:00 to alleviate lifting And 00:17:40:00 00:17:40:00 certainly hauling more 00:17:40:00 00:17:41:00 materials it makes absolute 00:17:41:00 00:17:43:00 sense to get A good garden cart 00:17:43:00 00:17:44:00 considering the terrain. 00:17:44:00 00:17:47:00 Obviously if you're going over 00:17:47:00 00:17:48:00 Grass or access there's a lot 00:17:48:00 00:17:51:00 of great developments out there 00:17:51:00 00:17:51:00 In olive here does cut flower 00:17:51:00 00:17:52:00 arrangements for Rotary 00:17:52:00 00:17:52:00 Gardens. 00:17:52:00 00:17:54:00 So she's got Some nice some 00:17:54:00 00:17:55:00 tires on that wagon so she can 00:17:55:00 00:17:58:00 get wherever she needs to go. 00:17:58:00 00:17:59:00 >> I do want to mention 00:17:59:00 00:17:59:00 the wellness garden briefly at 00:17:59:00 00:18:01:00 a rotary Botanical Gardens in 00:18:01:00 00:18:02:00 what's exciting about the space 00:18:02:00 00:18:05:00 it's only two years Old and it 00:18:05:00 00:18:06:00 was built to provide all 00:18:06:00 00:18:09:00 accessibility and if You've 00:18:09:00 00:18:10:00 been to the gardens and I hope 00:18:10:00 00:18:11:00 you will visit there is is a 00:18:11:00 00:18:11:00 booth here. 00:18:11:00 00:18:13:00 >> So 30 First year of 00:18:13:00 00:18:14:00 the gardens it's a 20 acre 00:18:14:00 00:18:15:00 garden on the site of an old 00:18:15:00 00:18:16:00 Santa Gravel Pit started by 00:18:16:00 00:18:17:00 Rotarian Dr Yahoo! 00:18:17:00 00:18:20:00 You saw earlier And this was 00:18:20:00 00:18:21:00 our first new garden in seven 00:18:21:00 00:18:24:00 years and it was A tough sell 00:18:24:00 00:18:25:00 to our board of directors 00:18:25:00 00:18:25:00 because they said isn't 00:18:25:00 00:18:27:00 the entire Garden Wellness 00:18:27:00 00:18:28:00 Doesn't it promote feelings of 00:18:28:00 00:18:28:00 wellbeing? 00:18:28:00 00:18:28:00 Yes, absolutely. 00:18:28:00 00:18:32:00 What we wanted to create was a 00:18:32:00 00:18:34:00 very sensory heavy space that 00:18:34:00 00:18:35:00 Was all accessible that 00:18:35:00 00:18:35:00 provided programmatic potential 00:18:35:00 00:18:39:00 meaning Bringing in user groups 00:18:39:00 00:18:42:00 to actively garden to plant and 00:18:42:00 00:18:42:00 Providing access. 00:18:42:00 00:18:43:00 If you look in the upper right 00:18:43:00 00:18:45:00 of the slide you see a path 00:18:45:00 00:18:46:00 That goes to a roadway. 00:18:46:00 00:18:47:00 That roadway is the closest way 00:18:47:00 00:18:49:00 for some Mobility impaired 00:18:49:00 00:18:50:00 groups to get right into that 00:18:50:00 00:18:53:00 garden as opposed to walking A 00:18:53:00 00:18:54:00 hundred fifty yards from our 00:18:54:00 00:18:54:00 visitor center. 00:18:54:00 00:18:55:00 The garden will continue to 00:18:55:00 00:18:58:00 develop And very colorful in 00:18:58:00 00:18:58:00 its arrangement but it's meant 00:18:58:00 00:19:01:00 for again sensory engagement 00:19:01:00 00:19:02:00 And it's been a massive hit. 00:19:02:00 00:19:03:00 >> And so again the term 00:19:03:00 00:19:04:00 wellness gardener Healing 00:19:04:00 00:19:05:00 garden is a bit arbitrary 00:19:05:00 00:19:06:00 because I do feel we get that 00:19:06:00 00:19:08:00 from all our gardens But 00:19:08:00 00:19:09:00 there's ways we can tweak a 00:19:09:00 00:19:10:00 garden for everything we've 00:19:10:00 00:19:12:00 talked about accessable We 00:19:12:00 00:19:13:00 certainly the sensory 00:19:13:00 00:19:17:00 experience That was year one. 00:19:17:00 00:19:17:00 There's a wonderful water 00:19:17:00 00:19:20:00 feature in the center Note 00:19:20:00 00:19:21:00 the raised beds in 00:19:21:00 00:19:21:00 the foreground there to 00:19:21:00 00:19:24:00 different heights 24 inches for 00:19:24:00 00:19:24:00 wheelchair and sitting height 00:19:24:00 00:19:28:00 and then Belly button height 36 00:19:28:00 00:19:28:00 inches. 00:19:28:00 00:19:30:00 And we had a long list Of 00:19:30:00 00:19:31:00 volunteers. 00:19:31:00 00:19:31:00 They were waiting four years 00:19:31:00 00:19:34:00 for this that couldn't Do 00:19:34:00 00:19:35:00 the traditional garb ground 00:19:35:00 00:19:35:00 level gardening. 00:19:35:00 00:19:36:00 >> They were waiting for 00:19:36:00 00:19:39:00 the opportunity And we had 00:19:39:00 00:19:39:00 certainly large containers that 00:19:39:00 00:19:40:00 folks could plant. 00:19:40:00 00:19:42:00 But this Allowed a huge amount 00:19:42:00 00:19:43:00 of square footage to be planted 00:19:43:00 00:19:46:00 and was super Exciting to get 00:19:46:00 00:19:47:00 the kids involved in planting 00:19:47:00 00:19:49:00 it All those little feet. 00:19:49:00 00:19:50:00 It was nice to get them out 00:19:50:00 00:19:50:00 there. 00:19:50:00 00:19:53:00 They did it just as Excellent 00:19:53:00 00:19:53:00 job filled in real nicely. 00:19:53:00 00:19:57:00 So in terms of a visual effects 00:19:57:00 00:19:58:00 turns of sensory engagement 00:19:58:00 00:20:00:00 it's beautiful and It's meant 00:20:00:00 00:20:01:00 for everyone who visits 00:20:01:00 00:20:01:00 the garden. 00:20:01:00 00:20:02:00 >> What's hidden in here is a 00:20:02:00 00:20:04:00 lot of other Plants used for 00:20:04:00 00:20:05:00 programing and this past year 00:20:05:00 00:20:08:00 the majority The garden was 00:20:08:00 00:20:08:00 maintained by various 00:20:08:00 00:20:11:00 volunteers and groups many with 00:20:11:00 00:20:12:00 Various impairments and it just 00:20:12:00 00:20:15:00 was a huge, huge. 00:20:15:00 00:20:16:00 And I won't I tend to start 00:20:16:00 00:20:19:00 talking about a lot These 00:20:19:00 00:20:21:00 plants but certainly color to 00:20:21:00 00:20:22:00 My earlier comment. 00:20:22:00 00:20:23:00 I'm on a tangent with design 00:20:23:00 00:20:24:00 here but note how important 00:20:24:00 00:20:26:00 foliage becomes. 00:20:26:00 00:20:27:00 Most of what you're seeing here 00:20:27:00 00:20:27:00 are seasonal plants that bright 00:20:27:00 00:20:29:00 yellow is a Golden delicious 00:20:29:00 00:20:33:00 pineapple sage But fun to offer 00:20:33:00 00:20:36:00 all that compositional interest 00:20:36:00 00:20:38:00 We do need to take time to sit 00:20:38:00 00:20:40:00 and certainly Enjoy our 00:20:40:00 00:20:40:00 gardens. 00:20:40:00 00:20:41:00 >> That becomes important but 00:20:41:00 00:20:44:00 we do know once we Once we sit 00:20:44:00 00:20:45:00 down it gets harder and harder 00:20:45:00 00:20:48:00 to get up. 00:20:48:00 00:20:49:00 >> I have to say I'm constantly 00:20:49:00 00:20:49:00 impressed by our older 00:20:49:00 00:20:50:00 volunteers. 00:20:50:00 00:20:51:00 We have a Group of volunteers 00:20:51:00 00:20:52:00 called The Grumpy The Grumpy 00:20:52:00 00:20:55:00 Old Men and You remember 00:20:55:00 00:20:56:00 the movie Walter Macho Jack 00:20:56:00 00:20:56:00 Lemmon. 00:20:56:00 00:20:58:00 So it Started night the garden 00:20:58:00 00:20:59:00 started in 98. 00:20:59:00 00:21:02:00 >> Excuse No excuse me eighty 00:21:02:00 00:21:06:00 eighty nine and ultimately It 00:21:06:00 00:21:07:00 started with three grumpy eyes 00:21:07:00 00:21:07:00 and it was guys that would come 00:21:07:00 00:21:08:00 in on Monday and Thursday 00:21:08:00 00:21:10:00 mornings Have a cup of coffee 00:21:10:00 00:21:11:00 and do a project and then it 00:21:11:00 00:21:13:00 blossomed into Many many 00:21:13:00 00:21:14:00 gentlemen coming and including 00:21:14:00 00:21:16:00 crumpets. 00:21:16:00 00:21:17:00 >> We have a crumpet in 00:21:17:00 00:21:20:00 the room I see Bonnie in 00:21:20:00 00:21:23:00 the back there the but 00:21:23:00 00:21:24:00 the Great thing about it was I 00:21:24:00 00:21:27:00 couldn't believe these were 00:21:27:00 00:21:28:00 Gentlemen who weren't 00:21:28:00 00:21:28:00 necessarily interested in 00:21:28:00 00:21:31:00 gardening their previous Life 00:21:31:00 00:21:32:00 skills like carpentry, plumbing 00:21:32:00 00:21:34:00 electrician Cetera help 00:21:34:00 00:21:35:00 the gardens in many capacities 00:21:35:00 00:21:38:00 but their desire to get Out and 00:21:38:00 00:21:39:00 be active was so important and 00:21:39:00 00:21:42:00 many of their contemporaries 00:21:42:00 00:21:43:00 After retirement were doing a 00:21:43:00 00:21:43:00 lot of sitting and wondering 00:21:43:00 00:21:46:00 what they should Be doing. 00:21:46:00 00:21:46:00 >> Now granted some of 00:21:46:00 00:21:47:00 the gentlemen came down at 00:21:47:00 00:21:49:00 the behest of their wives 00:21:49:00 00:21:50:00 Saying get out of the house and 00:21:50:00 00:21:52:00 go find something to do. 00:21:52:00 00:21:53:00 But the relationships that were 00:21:53:00 00:21:56:00 formed of Course the physical 00:21:56:00 00:21:57:00 benefits. 00:21:57:00 00:21:57:00 I'm not saying we shouldn't 00:21:57:00 00:22:00:00 take time to sit down And enjoy 00:22:00:00 00:22:01:00 the garden but we do want to be 00:22:01:00 00:22:03:00 happy when we're out there 00:22:03:00 00:22:04:00 Without a doubt. 00:22:04:00 00:22:07:00 So that becomes absolutely 00:22:07:00 00:22:08:00 Vital in that health and 00:22:08:00 00:22:08:00 happiness becomes important. 00:22:08:00 00:22:11:00 >> Engaging the children is one 00:22:11:00 00:22:12:00 of the most important things we 00:22:12:00 00:22:12:00 can do. 00:22:12:00 00:22:15:00 >> I Mentioned that earlier and 00:22:15:00 00:22:15:00 this mom and her daughter came 00:22:15:00 00:22:18:00 to one of our workdays. 00:22:18:00 00:22:19:00 We always good about sending 00:22:19:00 00:22:20:00 extra plants home for kids to 00:22:20:00 00:22:23:00 try And I would encourage all 00:22:23:00 00:22:24:00 of you as you go through 00:22:24:00 00:22:25:00 the expo if you have 00:22:25:00 00:22:26:00 The opportunity to buy some 00:22:26:00 00:22:29:00 seeds or something for the kids 00:22:29:00 00:22:30:00 To do that. 00:22:30:00 00:22:31:00 It's one of those things that I 00:22:31:00 00:22:33:00 think you'll Make gardeners for 00:22:33:00 00:22:33:00 life. 00:22:33:00 00:22:34:00 You'll forge that connection as 00:22:34:00 00:22:37:00 we close On backup because I 00:22:37:00 00:22:37:00 don't necessarily want you to 00:22:37:00 00:22:40:00 this to end With notes about me 00:22:40:00 00:22:41:00 gardening as we age should be 00:22:41:00 00:22:44:00 we should Still have the same 00:22:44:00 00:22:44:00 benefit of enjoyment whether 00:22:44:00 00:22:47:00 we're growing produce For four 00:22:47:00 00:22:48:00 and ability growing our own 00:22:48:00 00:22:51:00 herbs, trying to improve our 00:22:51:00 00:22:51:00 gardens. 00:22:51:00 00:22:52:00 >> But it should be something 00:22:52:00 00:22:55:00 that doesn't continue To be a 00:22:55:00 00:22:55:00 negative strain on our bodies 00:22:55:00 00:22:58:00 and there's Ways of adapting 00:22:58:00 00:22:58:00 the garden as you've seen 00:22:58:00 00:22:59:00 you'll see some great ideas in 00:22:59:00 00:23:01:00 the garden next expo Again 00:23:01:00 00:23:02:00 changing the way we approach 00:23:02:00 00:23:03:00 how we use our tools, how we 00:23:03:00 00:23:05:00 garden. 00:23:05:00 00:23:05:00 There's some exceptional ways 00:23:05:00 00:23:06:00 of doing that and I hope this 00:23:06:00 00:23:09:00 just gets you started And some 00:23:09:00 00:23:09:00 ideas. 00:23:09:00 00:23:12:00 This again is what I'm doing to 00:23:12:00 00:23:13:00 Visit my my booth. 00:23:13:00 00:23:14:00 I think there's a lot of fun 00:23:14:00 00:23:16:00 things going on and we Do have 00:23:16:00 00:23:17:00 a little bit of time for 00:23:17:00 00:23:17:00 questions. 00:23:17:00 00:23:18:00 So I think what I'll do for 00:23:18:00 00:23:20:00 the sake of time is Why don't 00:23:20:00 00:23:21:00 we take five questions and then 00:23:21:00 00:23:23:00 we'll we'll call it a morning. 00:23:23:00 00:23:24:00 >> Thank you everyone. 00:23:24:00 00:23:47:00 As Yasser Yeah. 00:23:47:00 00:23:48:00 >> The question is about when 00:23:48:00 00:23:51:00 using lumber for Particularly 00:23:51:00 00:23:51:00 for elevated gardens or 00:23:51:00 00:23:52:00 containers situations is there 00:23:52:00 00:23:54:00 a concern about Using treated 00:23:54:00 00:23:54:00 lumber? 00:23:54:00 00:23:55:00 So 20 or 30 years ago I 00:23:55:00 00:23:58:00 would've had a heavier Concern 00:23:58:00 00:23:58:00 . 00:23:58:00 00:23:59:00 I would say absolutely not. 00:23:59:00 00:24:00:00 If you're growing vegetables or 00:24:00:00 00:24:02:00 herbs because of Those 00:24:02:00 00:24:02:00 chemicals potentially leaching 00:24:02:00 00:24:03:00 into the plant material. 00:24:03:00 00:24:06:00 A lot of modern Lumber now is 00:24:06:00 00:24:07:00 heat treated or has some other 00:24:07:00 00:24:10:00 treatment process Although at 00:24:10:00 00:24:11:00 Rotary Gardens we tend to lean 00:24:11:00 00:24:13:00 on cedar for its longevity And 00:24:13:00 00:24:14:00 we're not we use no treated 00:24:14:00 00:24:14:00 wood just because of 00:24:14:00 00:24:17:00 the concern of As you just 00:24:17:00 00:24:18:00 mentioned. 00:24:18:00 00:24:19:00 So the concern is still there 00:24:19:00 00:24:21:00 despite The fact that I feel 00:24:21:00 00:24:22:00 it's a lot safer to use what's 00:24:22:00 00:24:23:00 considered treated lumber If 00:24:23:00 00:24:26:00 that makes sense. 00:24:26:00 00:24:26:00 >> Yes. 00:24:26:00 00:24:34:00 Great Question about pots what 00:24:34:00 00:24:34:00 can you leave out over 00:24:34:00 00:24:34:00 the winter? 00:24:34:00 00:24:37:00 I'll start by Saying don't 00:24:37:00 00:24:38:00 leave any pots out over winter 00:24:38:00 00:24:39:00 with soil in them and I hope 00:24:39:00 00:24:42:00 that makes Sense and not that 00:24:42:00 00:24:42:00 that necessarily will cause 00:24:42:00 00:24:46:00 damage To the pot but with a 00:24:46:00 00:24:46:00 tough winter it will. 00:24:46:00 00:24:47:00 >> Think about that soil 00:24:47:00 00:24:49:00 freezing and thawing And what 00:24:49:00 00:24:50:00 that can do particularly to 00:24:50:00 00:24:50:00 terracotta and ceramics. 00:24:50:00 00:24:53:00 A lot of the Modern plastics or 00:24:53:00 00:24:53:00 fiberglass pots are totally 00:24:53:00 00:24:56:00 fine outside But when you're 00:24:56:00 00:24:57:00 looking at those types of pots 00:24:57:00 00:24:59:00 modern Synthetic containers 00:24:59:00 00:25:00:00 the plastics and fiberglass are 00:25:00:00 00:25:03:00 now UVA protected. 00:25:03:00 00:25:04:00 >> Think about 15 20 years ago 00:25:04:00 00:25:05:00 your plastic pots started to 00:25:05:00 00:25:08:00 fade, get brittle over four to 00:25:08:00 00:25:09:00 five years and a lot of that is 00:25:09:00 00:25:10:00 just because of the Sun. 00:25:10:00 00:25:12:00 >> So at Rotary Gardens all 00:25:12:00 00:25:14:00 the containers that we Can move 00:25:14:00 00:25:15:00 are totally emptied of soil 00:25:15:00 00:25:16:00 late in the season we actually 00:25:16:00 00:25:19:00 sterilize Them with a one to 10 00:25:19:00 00:25:20:00 bleach to water solution just 00:25:20:00 00:25:23:00 rubbing The insides, cleaning 00:25:23:00 00:25:23:00 them off. 00:25:23:00 00:25:24:00 We flip them upside down and 00:25:24:00 00:25:27:00 they're left Outside because 00:25:27:00 00:25:27:00 there's nothing inside. 00:25:27:00 00:25:28:00 There's no issue of that 00:25:28:00 00:25:30:00 freezing and fine Thing if you 00:25:30:00 00:25:31:00 have the ability to put him in 00:25:31:00 00:25:32:00 the garage that helps with 00:25:32:00 00:25:33:00 the longevity. 00:25:33:00 00:25:34:00 But back to my earlier comment 00:25:34:00 00:25:37:00 I'm wary of leaving anything 00:25:37:00 00:25:38:00 Soil in it. 00:25:38:00 00:25:39:00 I'll contradict that by saying 00:25:39:00 00:25:42:00 my mom has had the Same soil in 00:25:42:00 00:25:44:00 a container for like 20 years 00:25:44:00 00:25:45:00 So and it's it's worked for 00:25:45:00 00:25:45:00 her. 00:25:45:00 00:25:48:00 >> Don't ever use garden Soil 00:25:48:00 00:25:49:00 in your containers. 00:25:49:00 00:25:50:00 Make your own mix. 00:25:50:00 00:25:52:00 The drainage is important. 00:25:52:00 00:25:52:00 Know what you're getting into 00:25:52:00 00:25:56:00 for appropriate soil mix? 00:25:56:00 00:25:57:00 >> Yes, sir. 00:25:57:00 00:26:09:00 The comment about a ceramic pot 00:26:09:00 00:26:13:00 is flipping it over Even with 00:26:13:00 00:26:14:00 the soil in it and as it 00:26:14:00 00:26:14:00 settles out doesn't have an 00:26:14:00 00:26:19:00 issue With damage. 00:26:19:00 00:26:20:00 >> You just have to tip it. 00:26:20:00 00:26:21:00 >> Although I would argue what 00:26:21:00 00:26:23:00 we Do at the gardens due to our 00:26:23:00 00:26:24:00 concern about reusing any of 00:26:24:00 00:26:26:00 the same soil Containers if we 00:26:26:00 00:26:27:00 have any fungal issues which 00:26:27:00 00:26:28:00 had been prevalent the last 00:26:28:00 00:26:30:00 three Summers because of 00:26:30:00 00:26:31:00 the wetness we actually are 00:26:31:00 00:26:33:00 taking all of our soil out 00:26:33:00 00:26:33:00 Composting and then starting 00:26:33:00 00:26:34:00 new making sure the drainage 00:26:34:00 00:26:37:00 has been established With every 00:26:37:00 00:26:38:00 container at rotary gardens 00:26:38:00 00:26:38:00 including hanging baskets, 00:26:38:00 00:26:41:00 having additional drainage 00:26:41:00 00:26:42:00 Holes see where it were there 00:26:42:00 00:26:42:00 every day. 00:26:42:00 00:26:45:00 So we they they Never dry out. 00:26:45:00 00:26:46:00 We're not worried about 00:26:46:00 00:26:46:00 anything drying out so we're 00:26:46:00 00:26:48:00 able to hand water Most of 00:26:48:00 00:26:49:00 these things but there are ways 00:26:49:00 00:26:50:00 of adding materials to your 00:26:50:00 00:26:52:00 containers To maintain 00:26:52:00 00:26:53:00 moisture, slow release 00:26:53:00 00:26:53:00 fertilizers. 00:26:53:00 00:26:56:00 But what we Like is that sharp 00:26:56:00 00:26:57:00 drainage and I will say 00:26:57:00 00:26:59:00 the soil we mix for containers 00:26:59:00 00:26:59:00 Is two thirds soil. 00:26:59:00 00:27:00:00 It's mix. 00:27:00:00 00:27:01:00 That's the real light and 00:27:01:00 00:27:03:00 fluffy stuff. 00:27:03:00 00:27:04:00 It's primarily peat moss. 00:27:04:00 00:27:05:00 It has per light and formic 00:27:05:00 00:27:07:00 highlight The white flecks and 00:27:07:00 00:27:08:00 beads but one third is compost. 00:27:08:00 00:27:11:00 We had the compost for new 00:27:11:00 00:27:12:00 nutrient value for health, for 00:27:12:00 00:27:14:00 moisture Retention and then 00:27:14:00 00:27:15:00 slow release fertilizer. 00:27:15:00 00:27:19:00 >> Any of our containers that 00:27:19:00 00:27:19:00 have annuals and am also get 00:27:19:00 00:27:20:00 liquid fertilizer five times a 00:27:20:00 00:27:21:00 year June through August. 00:27:21:00 00:27:23:00 It seems like a lot but we're 00:27:23:00 00:27:25:00 doing these lush annuals For 00:27:25:00 00:27:26:00 the elephant years and some of 00:27:26:00 00:27:26:00 the larger tropical is we're 00:27:26:00 00:27:29:00 beefing them up With a lot of 00:27:29:00 00:27:30:00 fertilizer which is not 00:27:30:00 00:27:32:00 essential for all plants. 00:27:32:00 00:27:33:00 I think we know that. 00:27:33:00 00:27:34:00 Two more questions. 00:27:34:00 00:27:43:00 >> Yes, Yeah. 00:27:43:00 00:27:48:00 The question Is do we reuse 00:27:48:00 00:27:48:00 the soil in containers? 00:27:48:00 00:27:51:00 And if so, how would we enrich 00:27:51:00 00:27:51:00 It? 00:27:51:00 00:27:52:00 We do not reuse the soil in 00:27:52:00 00:27:53:00 the containers. 00:27:53:00 00:27:54:00 So all of that is Composted 00:27:54:00 00:27:55:00 with that compost two years 00:27:55:00 00:27:56:00 later coming back into 00:27:56:00 00:27:59:00 the gardens But areas where 00:27:59:00 00:27:59:00 there's raised beds like 00:27:59:00 00:28:01:00 the wellness garden you saw 00:28:01:00 00:28:02:00 The two foot and three foot 00:28:02:00 00:28:02:00 high beds. 00:28:02:00 00:28:05:00 We're not excavating those but 00:28:05:00 00:28:06:00 What we are doing is augmenting 00:28:06:00 00:28:07:00 with a little compost every 00:28:07:00 00:28:09:00 year just to enrich And that 00:28:09:00 00:28:09:00 overtime that starts to add 00:28:09:00 00:28:10:00 some volume. 00:28:10:00 00:28:13:00 But we feel That becomes an 00:28:13:00 00:28:16:00 important folks that have 00:28:16:00 00:28:17:00 Reused their soil. 00:28:17:00 00:28:18:00 What I encourage you is to 00:28:18:00 00:28:18:00 still empty your pot to make 00:28:18:00 00:28:19:00 sure your drainage holes Are 00:28:19:00 00:28:20:00 good. 00:28:20:00 00:28:21:00 Put your old soil on a tarp, 00:28:21:00 00:28:22:00 add some good stuff, churn it 00:28:22:00 00:28:24:00 all together And you can reuse 00:28:24:00 00:28:24:00 it. 00:28:24:00 00:28:27:00 >> But to my earlier comment of 00:28:27:00 00:28:28:00 The worry of perpetuation of 00:28:28:00 00:28:29:00 fungal problems yeah Santa Did 00:28:29:00 00:28:33:00 you have a question? 00:28:33:00 00:28:34:00 >> Sure. 00:28:34:00 00:28:37:00 Correct. 00:28:37:00 00:28:37:00 Yes. 00:28:37:00 00:28:41:00 Yes. 00:28:41:00 00:28:41:00 Hosannas question is about our 00:28:41:00 00:28:43:00 containers and what do we do 00:28:43:00 00:28:44:00 With the fertilizer? 00:28:44:00 00:28:45:00 So every container at 00:28:45:00 00:28:46:00 the gardens and no product 00:28:46:00 00:28:48:00 endorsements Here. 00:28:48:00 00:28:49:00 But we have the pellets as 00:28:49:00 00:28:52:00 Michael fertilizer so Releases 00:28:52:00 00:28:52:00 nutrients for four months when 00:28:52:00 00:28:54:00 the soil temperature 70 degrees 00:28:54:00 00:28:55:00 . 00:28:55:00 00:28:56:00 So that's June, July, August, 00:28:56:00 00:28:56:00 September. 00:28:56:00 00:28:59:00 It's there's fertilizer Coming 00:28:59:00 00:28:59:00 out of those those beads. 00:28:59:00 00:29:02:00 So starting in June every three 00:29:02:00 00:29:03:00 Weeks we go out with liquid 00:29:03:00 00:29:04:00 fertilizer and we water 00:29:04:00 00:29:07:00 actually All of our annual beds 00:29:07:00 00:29:07:00 including the containers. 00:29:07:00 00:29:10:00 So that equates to five 00:29:10:00 00:29:10:00 Additional times where actually 00:29:10:00 00:29:11:00 our last fertilizer application 00:29:11:00 00:29:14:00 is in mid-August And everything 00:29:14:00 00:29:18:00 seems to be extremely lush. 00:29:18:00 00:29:19:00 >> We're and we're not shy 00:29:19:00 00:29:19:00 about the asthma coat. 00:29:19:00 00:29:20:00 >> So it has a pretty good 00:29:20:00 00:29:21:00 start with a slow Release as 00:29:21:00 00:29:21:00 well. 00:29:21:00 00:29:23:00 By the way, soil this mix is 00:29:23:00 00:29:25:00 very Nutrient poor. 00:29:25:00 00:29:26:00 >> That's the reason we do a 00:29:26:00 00:29:27:00 third compost because that 00:29:27:00 00:29:29:00 light fluffy Stuff is meant 00:29:29:00 00:29:30:00 primarily for drainage and root 00:29:30:00 00:29:30:00 penetration. 00:29:30:00 00:29:32:00 It's not super Nutrient heavy 00:29:32:00 00:29:33:00 so that's why we custom mix our 00:29:33:00 00:29:36:00 own and never Buy a bag of 00:29:36:00 00:29:37:00 potting soil that is hard to 00:29:37:00 00:29:41:00 lift If it has any have heft to 00:29:41:00 00:29:41:00 it leave it be. 00:29:41:00 00:29:43:00 And I Hope that makes sense. 00:29:43:00 00:29:46:00 One more question. 00:29:46:00 00:29:50:00 Yes, What is our potting soil 00:29:50:00 00:29:53:00 so well. 00:29:53:00 00:29:53:00 Great question. 00:29:53:00 00:29:54:00 So the soil is mixed. 00:29:54:00 00:29:55:00 We're pre purchasing. 00:29:55:00 00:29:57:00 That's something that's already 00:29:57:00 00:29:58:00 Been mixed and blended so that 00:29:58:00 00:30:00:00 word sounds I'd soil less Like 00:30:00:00 00:30:01:00 my wont soil but soil it's mix 00:30:01:00 00:30:04:00 means it's Not traditional 00:30:04:00 00:30:05:00 gardening soil again it's 00:30:05:00 00:30:08:00 primarily peat moss bark finds 00:30:08:00 00:30:08:00 That you can purchase anywhere 00:30:08:00 00:30:11:00 patronise your local Garden 00:30:11:00 00:30:12:00 centers first and foremost by 00:30:12:00 00:30:13:00 the way and there's a lot of 00:30:13:00 00:30:15:00 them here the Compost is our 00:30:15:00 00:30:16:00 own. 00:30:16:00 00:30:17:00 >> So the other third is our 00:30:17:00 00:30:22:00 own compost One third compost 00:30:22:00 00:30:25:00 two thirds soil is mix And then 00:30:25:00 00:30:26:00 that the slow release 00:30:26:00 00:30:26:00 fertilizer is churned 00:30:26:00 00:30:30:00 everything Is churned up from 00:30:30:00 00:30:31:00 top to bottom and always always 00:30:31:00 00:30:33:00 water your Containers before 00:30:33:00 00:30:34:00 you plant them. 00:30:34:00 00:30:35:00 >> You want things to settle 00:30:35:00 00:30:37:00 down to see the height Always 00:30:37:00 00:30:38:00 leave a lip on your containers 00:30:38:00 00:30:39:00 because if you have that soil 00:30:39:00 00:30:41:00 too high And you're not taking 00:30:41:00 00:30:41:00 into account what your plants 00:30:41:00 00:30:42:00 will displace then you have a 00:30:42:00 00:30:45:00 very High soil volume and as 00:30:45:00 00:30:46:00 you water it sheds off very 00:30:46:00 00:30:46:00 quickly. 00:30:46:00 00:30:49:00 So I think It makes sense. 00:30:49:00 00:31:00:00 Yes, Yeah, great question. 00:31:00:00 00:31:01:00 >> If you're thinking about how 00:31:01:00 00:31:03:00 do I Get compost or manure or 00:31:03:00 00:31:04:00 something to mix in these 00:31:04:00 00:31:07:00 containers First of all always 00:31:07:00 00:31:07:00 be wary of manure. 00:31:07:00 00:31:09:00 It has to be adequately aged. 00:31:09:00 00:31:10:00 So where can you find compost? 00:31:10:00 00:31:13:00 There's many places that sell 00:31:13:00 00:31:14:00 Compost if you're not home 00:31:14:00 00:31:15:00 composting look into it by 00:31:15:00 00:31:17:00 the way you really Should. 00:31:17:00 00:31:19:00 There's a lot of ways to do it 00:31:19:00 00:31:19:00 with tumblers with small a 00:31:19:00 00:31:20:00 little four by four space. 00:31:20:00 00:31:21:00 You can do it. 00:31:21:00 00:31:22:00 What's always shocking to me is 00:31:22:00 00:31:25:00 the amount Campus she produces 00:31:25:00 00:31:26:00 is a lot less than you would 00:31:26:00 00:31:26:00 ever think. 00:31:26:00 00:31:29:00 So Keep that in mind. 00:31:29:00 00:31:31:00 Ideally hopefully of neighbors 00:31:31:00 00:31:32:00 You just have to to have to 00:31:32:00 00:31:33:00 shop around. 00:31:33:00 00:31:34:00 But I'm always wary of buying 00:31:34:00 00:31:36:00 bag Product if I don't know its 00:31:36:00 00:31:36:00 its history. 00:31:36:00 00:31:39:00 >> So That's a tough one. 00:31:39:00 00:31:40:00 The compost we're adding is our 00:31:40:00 00:31:43:00 own compost to Buy something 00:31:43:00 00:31:43:00 called mushroom compost which 00:31:43:00 00:31:47:00 is which is aged Horse manure 00:31:47:00 00:31:47:00 and it's been blended with bark 00:31:47:00 00:31:50:00 finds it's also been Heat 00:31:50:00 00:31:50:00 sterilised and I do that 00:31:50:00 00:31:51:00 because heat sterilisation 00:31:51:00 00:31:54:00 they're saying There's no weed 00:31:54:00 00:31:54:00 seeds in this compost. 00:31:54:00 00:31:55:00 >> Not true. 00:31:55:00 00:32:00:00 And We found that out after a 00:32:00:00 00:32:01:00 Horrible person laying year of 00:32:01:00 00:32:02:00 2010 where the person lane came 00:32:02:00 00:32:05:00 up Heavily. 00:32:05:00 00:32:06:00 But anyway, there's great ways 00:32:06:00 00:32:06:00 of doing. 00:32:06:00 00:32:08:00 I know we've Segway A little 00:32:08:00 00:32:09:00 bit into a container talk but 00:32:09:00 00:32:10:00 keep in mind you saw a lot of 00:32:10:00 00:32:12:00 raised beds, containers Is one 00:32:12:00 00:32:13:00 of the best ways to bring 00:32:13:00 00:32:13:00 the garden up and continue to 00:32:13:00 00:32:16:00 get your get your fix And 00:32:16:00 00:32:17:00 that's a simple way of saying 00:32:17:00 00:32:17:00 it. 00:32:17:00 00:32:18:00 But again, gardening as we age 00:32:18:00 00:32:20:00 should Be fun. 00:32:20:00 00:32:21:00 And share your love of 00:32:21:00 00:32:21:00 gardening. 00:32:21:00 00:32:23:00 Buy some seed packets for kids 00:32:23:00 00:32:23:00 . 00:32:23:00 00:32:24:00 Visit me at the booth. 00:32:24:00 00:32:25:00 Thank you everyone for your 00:32:25:00 00:37:17:00 time As Hey Robyn. 00:37:17:00 00:37:18:00 >> How are you? 00:37:18:00 00:37:25:00 Good Or Oh yeah. 00:37:25:00 00:37:25:00 Michael yeah. 00:37:25:00 00:37:27:00 Yeah. 00:37:27:00 00:37:31:00 He's he's a good guy. 00:37:31:00 00:37:35:00 He'll he'll do great. 00:37:35:00 00:37:36:00 Thank you. 00:37:36:00 00:37:36:00 Yeah.
