marsh will basically have a directional flow going through it over toppling 11:12.960 --> 11:17.160 at the top end and then the marsh grass will get pushed back in the current kind of creating 11:17.160 --> 11:20.840 a mat and that's where the fish will lay their eggs. 11:20.840 --> 11:26.760 So they are kind of unique to the wind and bagel system and I would say the wind and 11:26.760 --> fish in these marshes is the river will have much more thermal resistance, 14:35.040 --> 14:37.040 much more volume because it's a lot deeper. 14:37.040 --> 14:43.040 So when the water overtops the bank on the upper end and flows through the marsh it's 14:43.040 --> 14:48.040 much shallower, typically a dark bottom so if it's a sunny day or the sun will hit that 14:48.040 --> 14:56.040 dark bottom and warm the water up so then when the water travels through the marsh and 14:56.040 --> 15:02.040 exits at its downstream location it will basically create a temperature gradient where it's meeting 15:02.040 --> 15:06.040 the river and that's what's going to bring those fish into the marsh they want to go 15:06.040 --> 15:07.040 up there and spawn. 15:07.040 --> 15:12.040 That being said when we have a warm up and then things cool down really quickly you'll 15:12.040 --> 15:16.040 actually start to see warmer temperatures in the river comparatively to the marshes and 15:16.040 --> 15:27.040 that kind of shuts things down until it warms back up. 15:27.040 --> 15:32.040 The male fish will basically start to show up on the marshes as soon as the ice breaks 15:32.040 --> 15:37.040 up and then the females will start to find a couple hanging around in the lower portions 15:37.040 --> 15:42.040 of the marsh around 38 to 40 degrees and then things really start going crazy when you get 15:42.040 --> 15:48.040 to that 42 to 44 degree mark and then go well into when it's even upwards of that. 15:57.040 --> 16:18.040 This is our low the spawning marshes will not have any water in them so high water that 16:18.040 --> 16:23.040 we have right now is excellent direction on the highest I've seen it in my five seasons 16:24.040 --> 16:30.040 but that being said what you really need with several things we were looking at that one of the primary 20:25.040 --> 20:30.040 purposes of that was to see the proportions of fish that ran up the wolf river the fox river 20:30.040 --> 20:37.040 or stayed in the lake to spawn and from that study we saw 91% of fish run up the wolf river 20:37.040 --> 20:44.040 so the wolf river is most definitely the most prolific productive spawning area for the Winnebago 20:44.040 --> 20:50.040 system law the Winnebago system law population and its general success really does pay 20:50.040 --> 20:55.040 respect to the amount of spawning habitat and the quality of spawning habitat that we have 20:55.040 --> 21:01.040 up here on the wall it's about 100 miles from Lake Pergin up to the Shano dam of 21:01.040 --> 21:07.040 undammed rivers so a lot of connected flood train and wetland between here and there 21:07.040 --> 21:13.040 providing a lot of areas for fish to spawn successfully there's some marshes that will operate 21:13.040 --> 21:19.040 at certain water levels and other marshes that require other ones so you know we have our 21:19.040 --> 21:24.040 water area marshes that will target and our high water area marshes that we target 21:24.040 --> 21:29.040 but this one right here that we're in it's kind of the new London area complex we have 21:29.040 --> 21:35.040 vinegars wolf rafts Leslie's and Hortonville flats and this has been one of the most prolific 21:35.040 --> 21:40.040 spawning marshes on the system documented all the way back to Gordon Prego's work way back in the 21:40.040 --> 21:42.040 1960s 21:42.040 --> 21:58.040 the lower ends of the marshes are typically where the female fish will stage up before 21:58.040 --> 22:04.040 going into the oh that's a big part that's about 35 bucks 22:04.040 --> 22:11.040 the females will stage down in the lower end before going up to the upper end of the marsh 22:11.040 --> 22:16.040 you actually drop their eggs and spawn the upper ends are typically shower you'll see more 22:16.040 --> 22:21.040 that marsh trash getting blown back and active current up there and we typically like to 22:21.040 --> 22:27.040 focus our survey efforts down in the lower end 01:10:47.940 to get going here. 01:10:47.940 --> 01:10:51.940 It's one of the most important, Hortonville area marshes. 01:10:51.940 --> 01:10:55.940 One of the many marsh complexes that are found along the Wolf River 01:10:55.940 --> 01:10:59.940 where the Winnebago system all I come to spawn each spring. 01:10:59.940 --> 01:11:03.940 Most people that know anything about walleye spawning know gravel-based, 01:11:03.940 --> 01:11:06.940 rocky shores, so how does this fit into with walleye? 01:11:06.940 --> 01:11:08.940 What do they do this here? 01:11:08.940 --> 01:11:11.940 Yeah, so if you talk to biologists around the Midwest or even 01:11:11.940 --> 01:11:14.940 well-educated anglers when you talk about walleye spawning, 01:11:14.940 --> 01:11:18.940 a wild diameter rock or even gravel either in a river or a wind-swept shoreline 01:11:18.940 --> 01:11:22.940 on a lake that provides good current to keep the 01:11:22.940 --> 01:11:26.940 eggs free of sediment as well as well aerated during the development 01:11:26.940 --> 01:11:30.940 process, and those two water quality parameters here on the Wolf River 01:11:30.940 --> 01:11:34.940 are the same, however, the substrate on which the walleye spawn 01:11:34.940 --> 01:11:38.940 is very different. So the Winnebago strain of walleye are actually a 01:11:38.940 --> 01:11:42.940 marsh spawning strain of walleye, likely the most successful marsh spawning strain 01:11:42.940 --> 01:11:46.940 of walleye anywhere in the world. The fish come all the way 01:11:46.940 --> 01:11:50.940 from Winnebago and the pool lake, anywhere between 60 and maybe even 01:11:50.940 --> 01:11:54.940 pushing 100 miles on their journey upstream, so almost a 01:11:54.940 --> 01:11:58.940 could be a 200 mile round-trip journey forum. Basically 01:11:58.940 --> 01:12:02.940 what happens up here on the Wolf River as well as the upper 01:12:02.940 --> 01:12:06.940 Fox River, the flooded wetlands adjacent 01:12:06.940 --> 01:12:10.940 to the Wolf River, we refer to them as walleye spawning marshes. 01:12:10.940 --> 01:12:14.940 The way that the water flows through them can be dynamic with the water from the river 01:12:14.940 --> 01:12:18.940 over topping the bank throughout several sections of the entire 01:12:18.940 --> 01:12:22.940 length of the marsh, but the general idea is that the water will enter 01:12:22.940 --> 01:12:26.940 at a upper end location and then travel in a 01:12:26.940 --> 01:12:30.940 directional fashion down through the marsh and exit at a lower end. 01:12:30.940 --> 01:12:34.940 So we typically always enter the marshes at the lower end, and that is 01:12:34.940 --> 01:12:38.940 also what the fish will typically do. The marshes are a lot shallower than the 01:12:38.940 --> 01:12:42.940 main channel of the river here, so they have a lot less thermal resistance. If you get a nice 01:12:42.940 --> 01:12:46.940 day, nice spring day, and the sun's coming down, 01:12:46.940 --> 01:12:50.940 the dark bottom of the marshes and the shallow water will heat up a lot faster, 01:12:50.940 --> 01:12:54.940 so as the water is making its way through the marsh, 01:12:54.940 --> 01:12:58.940 it'll actually heat up and then actually create a little bit of a temperature gradient at the lower end 01:12:58.940 --> 01:13:02.940 where it meets up with the river. The fish making their migration up river will feel that 01:13:02.940 --> 01:13:06.940 and enter the marsh to go spawn. So when we talk about 01:13:06.940 --> 01:13:10.940 habitat, there's a lot of stories about climate change 01:13:10.940 --> 01:13:14.940 and lake shore development, and this is pretty unique 01:13:14.940 --> 01:13:18.940 and the amount of people over decades that have made sure that this habitat 01:13:18.940 --> 01:13:22.940 has not been drained or dredged or put into farmland 01:13:22.940 --> 01:13:26.940 or is still available for this. Yeah, so in general, the Winnebago system 01:13:26.940 --> 01:13:30.940 is home to one of the Midwest premier walleye fisheries. 01:13:30.940 --> 01:13:34.940 That being said, it is 100% sustained through natural reproduction and 01:13:34.940 --> 01:13:38.940 the success of that fishery really pays due to the 01:13:38.940 --> 01:13:42.940 amount and the quality of habitat up here 01:13:42.940 --> 01:13:46.940 on the Wolf River for spawning purposes. There are different 01:13:46.940 --> 01:13:50.940 things that happen up here, like there's different county highways 01:13:50.940 --> 01:13:54.940 that go across the floodplain that kind of create big dams and dykes. There's private land 01:13:54.940 --> 01:13:58.940 owners making trails and roads through their own property and then there's another one 01:13:58.940 --> 01:14:02.940 and a little bit south of here that has a big railroad going through it. 01:14:02.940 --> 01:14:06.940 Due to those kind of reasons, the disruption of that connectivity 01:14:06.940 --> 01:14:10.940 through those wetlands, that is typically viewed as bad for the 01:14:10.940 --> 01:14:14.940 water flow through those marshes. So groups like the Wisconsin Department of Natural 01:14:14.940 --> 01:14:18.940 Resources, walleyes for tomorrow, shadows on the Wolf, and many others 01:14:18.940 --> 01:14:22.940 that financially contribute will essentially conduct projects that promote the water 01:14:22.940 --> 01:14:26.940 flow through those marshes. A really common one is either the modification or removal 01:14:26.940 --> 01:14:30.940 of dams and dykes that may have been put in from 01:14:30.940 --> 01:14:34.940 maybe potential road projects or private land owners 01:14:34.940 --> 01:14:38.940 wanting to make their property more accessible. 01:14:38.940 --> 01:14:42.940 There's also covert projects that 01:14:42.940 --> 01:14:46.940 again will either be put into a dam or a high point in a bank to help 01:14:46.940 --> 01:14:50.940 facilitate water flow. And then another common one are bank cuts. 01:14:50.940 --> 01:14:54.940 So in certain water level years, the water may not be high enough 01:14:54.940 --> 01:14:58.940 at the upper end of the marsh to actually over top the bank and then get that 01:14:58.940 --> 01:15:02.940 marsh flowing. So one of the more successful projects we have out 01:15:02.940 --> 01:15:06.940 there is making a cut in the upper end of the marsh to allow water 01:15:06.940 --> 01:15:10.940 to flow through at lower water levels. Right now here today 01:15:10.940 --> 01:15:14.940 I believe the new London gauge is right around 9.7. That is above flood 01:15:14.940 --> 01:15:18.940 stage. We have very high water this year. So we actually did have a bank 01:15:18.940 --> 01:15:22.940 cut up there. I tried pointing out to you guys, but as of right now 01:15:22.940 --> 01:15:26.940 the water is just totally over topping the bank. So in a lower water year when that's 01:15:26.940 --> 01:15:30.940 the only spot the water can get through there, you can really go out there and see the water gushing 01:15:30.940 --> 01:15:34.940 through that cut there. And then you can see it feed through the entire marsh creating that desirable 01:15:34.940 --> 01:15:38.940 flow that we want. When we talk about the whole life cycle of wall, 01:15:38.940 --> 01:15:42.940 they come up here to spawn and when the fry hatch, like they're eventually 01:15:42.940 --> 01:15:46.940 going to float their way down, right? Yep. So the fish 01:15:46.940 --> 01:15:50.940 the eggs will develop over a period of 10 to 14 days on average. 01:15:50.940 --> 01:15:54.940 However, it can be prolonged from that. If there is colder water times, it's directly 01:15:54.940 --> 01:15:58.940 related to water times. The colder the longer it will take. And then 01:15:58.940 --> 01:16:02.940 after the fish hatch out, they're dependent on that water flow going through that 01:16:02.940 --> 01:16:06.940 marsh to basically facilitate what we call larval drift. The fish will 01:16:06.940 --> 01:16:10.940 basically hatch out and swim up fry. Very low ability to have 01:16:10.940 --> 01:16:14.940 any kind of locomotion. They can basically just flip their towel around and swim up into the current 01:16:14.940 --> 01:16:18.940 and get carried down. And then what they're trying to do there is let the current take them 01:16:18.940 --> 01:16:22.940 back into the Wolf River that will eventually take them back into Lake Puygan and 01:16:22.940 --> 01:16:26.940 the rest of the pool lakes where there's no plankton food source is much more abundant than 01:16:26.940 --> 01:16:30.940 up here on the Wolf River. And when it comes to the tagging that you're doing 01:16:30.940 --> 01:16:34.940 like you've got the mass figured out, like the number of people 01:16:34.940 --> 01:16:38.940 I turned that in to give you that population estimates, right? Yep. So 01:16:38.940 --> 01:16:42.940 there's kind of two main, I would say three main purposes of the survey up here. One 01:16:42.940 --> 01:16:46.940 we're up here checking out all the marsh conditions, getting ideas for potential future projects. 01:16:46.940 --> 01:16:50.940 So that's just kind of an overarching general thing we're doing the whole time. Another 01:16:50.940 --> 01:16:54.940 thing is just all of our basic biometric data. So we're taking 01:16:54.940 --> 01:16:58.940 Langson fish, sex obviously, and then we do take a male age sample. That's a good way to look 01:16:58.940 --> 01:17:02.940 at how our year classes documented in the trail survey actually get recruited 01:17:02.940 --> 01:17:06.940 to the adult spawning stock. And then lastly we have 01:17:06.940 --> 01:17:10.940 our tagging effort. So we have a goal of 1,000 female fish 01:17:10.940 --> 01:17:14.940 every single year. We'll usually encounter somewhere between 2 and 3,000 01:17:14.940 --> 01:17:18.940 miles along the way. The tagging on the system here has been done going back 01:17:18.940 --> 01:17:22.940 to 1993. So we have a very lengthy data set and we basically use those 01:17:22.940 --> 01:17:26.940 numbers. We have the amount of fish we have tagged, the 01:17:26.940 --> 01:17:30.940 number of fish that are returned by anglers, and then we also factor 01:17:30.940 --> 01:17:34.940 in tag loss and angler tag reporting rate in order to get 01:17:34.940 --> 01:17:38.940 an exploitation estimate on the system. So 01:17:38.940 --> 01:17:42.940 we did have a bag reduction on the system back in 2020. 01:17:42.940 --> 01:17:46.940 Went from a five daily bag to a three daily bag and 01:17:46.940 --> 01:17:50.940 an exploitation estimate that we get there is basically the primary way that we're evaluating 01:17:50.940 --> 01:17:54.940 what that bag reduction does to harvest on the system. 01:17:54.940 --> 01:17:58.940 Is the bag reduction more a result of poor reproduction or 01:17:58.940 --> 01:18:02.940 just so out of the pressure that it gets? The main 01:18:02.940 --> 01:18:06.940 motivation behind the bag reduction of 2020 was a 01:18:06.940 --> 01:18:10.940 further evaluation of angler tag reporting rates. We had previously 01:18:10.940 --> 01:18:14.940 estimated that 1 in 2 or you could say half of 01:18:14.940 --> 01:18:18.940 anglers that caught a tagged fish would actually return their tagged fish. 01:18:18.940 --> 01:18:22.940 We conducted a reward tag study and basically 01:18:22.940 --> 01:18:26.940 put a smaller number of tags out that are worth $100 01:18:26.940 --> 01:18:30.940 if an angler returns it. It's actually the same exact thing Green Bay is doing. I think you guys 01:18:30.940 --> 01:18:34.940 covered that as well. But from that effort we basically got a corrected 01:18:34.940 --> 01:18:38.940 tag reporting rate. You just compare the number of fish that are 01:18:38.940 --> 01:18:42.940 returned with the $100 rewards versus the non-reward 01:18:42.940 --> 01:18:46.940 every single year and just using that ratio there you can basically figure out 01:18:46.940 --> 01:18:50.940 how many people are actually returning their tags and we found that to be only 01:18:50.940 --> 01:18:54.940 1 in 3 people. So that dropped our tag reporting estimate down to 33% 01:18:54.940 --> 01:18:58.940 to from 50%. So basically making 01:18:58.940 --> 01:19:02.940 our exploitation estimates increase resulting in the motivation 01:19:02.940 --> 01:19:06.940 for the bag change. We like to see harvest stay below 35% on the system and 01:19:06.940 --> 01:19:10.940 ideally it would be below that. Below 20 would probably be better off 01:19:10.940 --> 01:19:14.940 but seeing those very high exploitation values was the main reason 01:19:14.940 --> 01:19:18.940 for the bag reduction. When you think about all the things that go 01:19:18.940 --> 01:19:22.940 into making this a successful fishery how important is it that 01:19:22.940 --> 01:19:26.940 you have so many volunteers you have so many groups raising money 01:19:26.940 --> 01:19:30.940 that people care and it's not just how many can I catch but that the whole 01:19:30.940 --> 01:19:34.940 system is thriving. Yeah there's a lot of passionate groups on the system 01:19:34.940 --> 01:19:38.940 we have a larger group that the DNR puts together it's called 01:19:38.940 --> 01:19:42.940 the Winnebago Fisheries Advisory Committee and it has anywhere from 01:19:42.940 --> 01:19:46.940 25 to probably closer to 30 now different fishing clubs and other organizations 01:19:46.940 --> 01:19:50.940 on the system we all get together we look at the data what the population current 01:19:50.940 --> 01:19:54.940 status is at and as of right now we have had a pretty lucky streak 01:19:54.940 --> 01:19:58.940 of production on the system that's what the system relies on you know we 01:19:58.940 --> 01:20:02.940 do have very high harvest but that being said we have very high exploitation 01:20:02.940 --> 01:20:06.940 so if we have a I guess you could say low or lack of production on the 01:20:06.940 --> 01:20:10.940 system for a number of years the amount of fish getting taken out isn't going down 01:20:10.940 --> 01:20:14.940 so you know the combination of low production and high exploitation that's the 01:20:14.940 --> 01:20:18.940 recipe for a crash and again as of now going back to 2016 we've had almost 01:20:18.940 --> 01:20:22.940 nothing but average to above average year classes show up with many notable 01:20:22.940 --> 01:20:26.940 near record year classes showing up in that time frame so that hasn't been too 01:20:26.940 --> 01:20:30.940 much call to action on the walleye population 01:20:30.940 --> 01:20:34.940 as of right now but you know we're always in communication with all those 01:20:34.940 --> 01:20:38.940 different groups out there another big thing with the groups is they actually help 01:20:38.940 --> 01:20:42.940 us conduct the work you know the management crew that covers one of bagels system 01:20:42.940 --> 01:20:46.940 all I management is a team of typically three people so you know utilizing 01:20:46.940 --> 01:20:50.940 not only volunteers we do have different DNR staff 01:20:50.940 --> 01:20:54.940 from different parts of the state help us out too 01:20:54.940 --> 01:20:58.940 but those volunteers play a huge role 01:20:58.940 --> 01:21:00.940 Thank you
