You You You You You You You Like normally the fish come you know around the bend or whatever and go up And then they're going to end up March this one and after a while spawn off and they go back down then they're on the deep deep side of the River and they're floating backwards down river you know they don't swim but they do swim but they're always higher up in a water column They might be six or eight feet down and all when they go back like now. They're on the bottom toward the bottom They don't know if you're great exact maybe kid I'll be too busy with this thing. Yeah I ain't gonna guarantee you catch any fish. No worries. That's because the water got so cold Main thing Like You know a shallow over there and it goes down it's probably Six and a half or seven feet deep here and then on the end it's another foot deeper at least You got a wolf every wolf every gone to the middle on Like I made this railing and you can Like fishing like this now like I can Know yeah, move over nice when I'm using gamefuls are all straight like that. I'm moving this way to This was a pontoon. I used to have other rafts that I made that That That were like pipe frame And then use barrels then I went to this one was It's easier used to have a hay wagon that you Had to load them on and This one and I made out of a pontoon and I made it wider and then I built a shack use Make a little shack we insulated and I put metal on the outside so I didn't have to do it nothing with it after well That's what the shack's all about Okay Okay, I thought Gary was gonna come I Really just Sit there and jig and you can feel it hit bottom you're up and down and There's different weights jigs according to how much current there is Anything all kinds of fish bait Like we had some Small mozz bass ready and rock bass got a few walleyes Once in a while, you get a sturgeon on they're getting ready. I know the D&R talked about on the news today was Usually the sturgeon spawn On the rocks like April 21st the waters are the 55 degrees But so cold the D&R said that they might spawn Like a week later or something all depends on the weather Get him up whole anything sir, do you I You You You You You You You You Can you just give me a mic check once sure, yeah, okay, thank you So I guess give me a little background on so you grew up here, right? Yeah, I grew up No, I've been here all my life like my dad took me fishing when I was a kid and been fishing all the time on rafts and I made different rafts that I had over the years and and This one's a pontoon made out of pontoons. I made it a wider than I built a shack on it I have a pontoon trailer which is easy for to Back under it and crank it up and where you go used to have to Take my other rafts as a jacket up and get it on that like a hay wagon or something like that It was a lot of work to head hauling around and Yeah, and things like that was harder to put in and out like this one too is a then I just to move it I Take my boat and motor and hook on the end of it and then push it around oh I got like pipes in the corner. That's what holds it in the Down the corner of the raft holds it in place wherever you put it in the wrap on the river and I've run an extra rope to the shore for Safety precautions to hold it case something Most of the times the pipes don't Slide do or nothing. They worked away in the dirt and you got to jack them up. Some guys got automatic cranks on them and stuff but usually Unique or special about it. Well, like if it rains here and all this raft here. I got a little hangover. I can I can stand under the raft and and Not get as wet The other thing is heated. I got a bunk in there. You could always take a nap if you didn't have to other thing is you can You can fish all night and fish fish some you know fish bite all night sometimes Especially when they're going on river. They're just floating by or whatever when they're coming up, you know, they're swimming by again You never know when you're gonna catch one all depends on the weather and the temperature of the water this spring and stuff of course I ice fish before and You can catch fish anytime sometimes you don't catch any Passion Kind of like a passion, you know It's a passion that's like I love love this north of the town here and we have property like we own my sister-in-law My brother and sister-in-law own this land here. It's on the river It's easy for us to either go hunting we go hunting here or over fish off it it You know, we're up fishing. I like fishing different different kinds of fish but The wolf river is quite a unique like up north. I went up there and fish for trout and there's all kinds of fish in the river system My hunt a lot bull hunt a lot Now I'm retired you can fish all you want But not that the fish are gonna bite every day, but people according to When you feel like you want to go usually the fish white bite, you know in the morning or afternoon or depends on the weather if it's clear out or how clear the water is and different times of the year Sometimes in the fall they catch a lot of fish all the friends different thing with a raft you can You had kids, you know, you can take the kids down there. They you know, you're a girlfriend or wife or something to Sit in a raft and keep warm they can fish to them or Whatever they want to do Yeah, it's it's it's supposed to rain tonight and start sprinkling and I don't know how heavy it is But now they're talking about another storm. I don't know what what'll happen now you know a couple weeks ago, you know, we had 20 some inches of snow that one day and It bit, you know melts and the brings the water off Higher water works helps the fishery by putting more water in the marshes so that the fish can get in and water level stays higher so that A's can hatch and then a frightened folk back out in the river That was one of the main thing back in the I'm gonna say years ago. There was a lot of fish back in the 60s and 70s when I fish and then the population kind of went down and then The conservation groups like we started, you know, walleye tomorrow And we started working on habitat improvement and What we did was we put some culverts in some places or cut the bank down so the water goes into the marsh Well for increased water flow and If we cut the bank down someplace where we were running in Oh the water flow Flew, you know, it keeps on going through the marsh longer amount of time and the fish would hatch and then the current would kind of Wash them back into the river same way like the water table was Because we cut the bank down the water was going across the marsh a longer amount of time and then Then it would have been so we improved up water flow and they got increased Reproduction that helped a lot Someplace we put culverts in Just increase the water flow There's a main thing That connection from a marsh to a culvert They go and make the culverts all connected They probably understand that the fish go up river and it's it's according to water flow, you know, they the Say wintertime it's frozen all and the river's lower And then once it starts raining or melting and snow melts and The river comes up to increases the flow and all the fish Feel that flow and then they head for the river and start swimming up river And they might swim away and stop and rest and then keep on traveling Some of these guys got different kinds of both motors here this guy's going by with all noises though go devil Probably use it for duck hunting too I Like we're fishing we're waiting for a fish to point it in all the fish are swimming up river yet We're kind of abandoned where the fish Normally would come around the corner and go up keep only going up river. There's different depths Shallow over here, and then it goes deeper And all species of fish are swimming up river. I mean In the fall they some of them back to the lake they stay in the lake Bass After a while later in the spring all the white bass run up here to spawn to a lot of us Granted we worked on some projects while I tomorrow work on project. We put a lot of reefs in Lake Winapago help the saugars, you know, and We have a lot of portable fish hatcheries that were used on different lakes that They take them along and take them to different lakes and hatch from the fry from the walleyes or saugars and they can Die the fry and They do not take the fish after well what happens to die the Makes up there's a bone in the fishes head off the list bone that If the zorbs die We when we die them when they're just hatch makes a circle in this bone If we We die these fish Say they raise these fish in a pond and their fingerlings, you know, four or five inches big the DNR can plant them in In a lake as they die the element that die goes into the bone in their apolipane and then it's only like a half moon later on the DNR takes a sample of The fish they'd say they take ten fish out and they Kill them and they take the bone out and they look under the microscope to see if the fish was died, you know at fingerlings eyes or When a verse, you know patched They can tell if Doesn't have a mark and then it's a natural reproduction Anyway, that's how they get their ideas for different amounts of fish somewhat Gives them a better idea Over the years I've worked on other Some of the marshes were mostly on the wolf river and really one up on the various river sometimes we try to just cut paints down sometimes they put culverts in depends on where What's the situation we'd call for? Like culverts are under a road or something where guys got to drive drive across it yet We aren't doing as many as we used to because of some regulations and The cost a lot of money to do we raise a lot of money for our different chapters where I raise a lot of money 200 250,000 3 $400,000 a year to use on projects throughout the state so He's sports sportsmen come to the banquet so they They you know We have a meal for them itself different areas We have prizes and stop banquet, you know that the banquets thought I had a nibble but Some fish bite a little bit and then they let go Big thing that affects them is temperature of the water I was warm warm the other day and then pulled off because we had an ice storm then Rain is cold and ice went into the System and pulled the water off and then you can then what happens is a fish quit waiting Yeah Something you got to put up with a lot of these guys you know they hear about somebody's catching fish or everybody comes and like here a lot of these people might be from Fox River Valley or different towns that they come and I call them tourists and You know granted it catch fish too you know, it's Fair to everybody else anybody wants to fish you fish by a license and pay your fees for your boat and fishing license and Go fishing You think it makes a difference how much you paid for your boat or how expensive your It had changed a lot But I had a raft it was it's nice going on a raft like we came down here today. We just walked down here and You got a little boat area just paddled to the dock and fish off the dock docks nice and sturdy and we get cold we can go inside and Get warm or I got an oven we can store them and it always makes cook something or Anyway Guys in the boat to get wet like stay dry But it's a lot of work maintaining a raft and taking care of it Biggest place some have some place to put it or attach it to property You can't put it on public land anymore Or DNR property the Sun private property you got to have the get a permit and permission from the land I know What is it about the heritage of it that makes this special Well, I know we talked a little bit about it before was the heritage thing thing was from the logging industry in the 1880s they had loggers that this system the Wolf River system is They cut logs up north and they floated them down the river The transport them and then they brought them to a different sawmills on the river here someone were into London and North Port was a big big logging small town and That's how they It was easier for them to load it down the river These apparently the loggers had to have some place to stay so they made a A shack and I presume they had logs and everything that they made rafts that they were on the river and they fished off them from home and for different fish for food and One thing here is from what I always knew is the Wolf River is the only place that I know of that I heard of that Oh Let's rafts on the river that permit them and So it's kind of a historic historic thing of the rafts on the river and Fisherman kept them going nowadays and It's a historic thing to keep on going There's quite a few you drive up and down. Yeah, yeah, there's you know different towns You know, it's somewhat by Horton You know different place on the river Shriakton and Hortonville and So that here is fleeces landing is a big one and of course, you know along the river why we go Fremont So when you were a kid was walleye for eating or while I was just done for catching well mainly It was mainly to eat, you know, I mean people get People didn't have as much money as some of people do know and you know It's just like hunting and everything else too was As a child, you know, we ate and I still do is We went out and shot a rabbit we ate a rabbit and squirrels and you know, I mean ducks and pheasants and stuff like that That's that's what we lived on other people did too and it included all types of fish Whatever they caught they ate a little shot It's probably a staple. Oh, I Probably well fish once a week anyway, you can't sell me put some in a freezer Oh, you know, I go trout fishing once a while I have a trout or You go perch fishing in the winter or pan fish or whatever And you don't have to go to grocery store Yeah save money You know, I got a little nibble on this poi. I don't know what it is He might be trying to bite it might be a Small fish Pick it up to you by feeling Might be a rock bass or I Don't know small mold bass You never know what's biting It's probably not a walleye a walleye would bite harder Nibble done a little bit And a minute on there Like a fish at night you got the lanterns on you got gas lanterns for lights and You had just Normally you have men who's out for the fish to bite on you don't you can jig at night if you want If you want to get warm you go inside Get warmed up use you got poles are sitting and you look off the window watch the polls fish bites here come out and Try to catch them left to the button What condition do you think the walleye fishery would be if you guys hadn't started doing what you were doing all that time ago The marshes and recall birds and all that work well people didn't I Would say people didn't really you know, I don't know They knew what was going on, but they didn't you know, there was a lot of fish and then all once as more and more people fish That they caught quite of the fish out and maybe they didn't have good years where the fish spawned where there wasn't a lot of reproduction so then the quantity of fish went down and then the guys fishing the fishermen realized that Well, what's happening, you know, we aren't having really good hatches for some reason and then we came up with the idea of helping the fish spawn for natural reproduction, and that's where we help Help the fish by working on the marshes through Get them to spawn to increase The numbers and it takes a few years for them to grow up of course, but as The DNR tracked them and then Some years you might You know one in three years you might have a good hatch or they might have a couple good years And they used to count them they used to have a graph went to one to ten after a while they do trolings Net trolings in Lake Winnebago and stuff places in the fall to see how many young in the year they are and To see how many there were actually hatched and grew and And then they can tell what year was good or bad or whatever But they had this graph one to ten and back in the early 90s Always they had to change the graph because there were so many fish because there was had to have them been a really good reproduction rate and they changed the graph up to 40 and It's like when they go out and do trolings they put their nets in and then and Trol they pull them and then they pull them out and they count all the fish in there all the minos and different kinds That's where they get these numbers from Anyway in the last few years they had to raise their graphs again because they raised it to 50 because we had a really good reproduction year so that's what As we can get the numbers from I suppose I should But it helped a lot of people. I mean know that I worked on the river here and Worked on the straighten surgeon trail here Normally we all did walleye projects, but then because I'm working on projects. I proposed this surgeon trail here knowing and improved it and they call it it was put more rocks in there and made a trail where Oh people can go and watch and see the sturgeon spawn The wolf river is one river One of the five places in the world you can actually see sturgeon spawn so You know if I'm working on Walleye project as well. That's right next to him somewhere a property that I Said why don't we make it good better for surgeon and there's other groups sturgeon for tomorrow work done Some of the other projects too that help the sturgeon It's nice to see Families come out there they bring their kids out there and then they can See the fish swimming along the shawarma and the kids there yelling and screaming look at that big one look at that big one Well, that's I'm glad to see that in the kids faces That get to see something that's unreal Well, how much of this is About kids because a lot of times you go out and see it's a bunch of old men fishing But you do see kids out there and there's a different level of excitement with that, right? All right. There's a Like for on the sturgeon trail. I mean everybody goes out there to watch them but like our walleye fishing or same way we could When we improve a marsh all all kinds of fish could actually go into it and Like Northern's usually go into there and earlier and they spawn earlier So Northern's could be using a marsh and then all of the walleyes go in there so And the thing about When you improve water flow across the marsh the natural weeds The natural vegetation Filters out some of the dirt. So actually you're improving water quality and I mean people don't think about that But I know that it takes some of the silt and dirt and it's maybe settles down in there So we're helping the water quality also The How important is walleye to the identity in this area? Well Walleye's about been here forever I presume but One of the Groups here is well, it's a fishing game called thing They have a new one in fishing game club they They have a big big whopper contest. It's about they call it big whopper, but it's like for walleye's and I presume it's almost been happening for 50 years they back in 60 1960s and 70s They put this boat out there with two dummies in it. It's called Pete and Joe It's out on ice and they had a contest where you would guess when the ice would go out and They gave prize away for that. So that's I think the thing of every year the guess when the ice would go out and This big whopper thing was up here at the by the boat landing. They had it for years was Bring your fish in they registered big ones little ones, whatever get prize away they have they used to have food there and and it was a fundraiser for them but a lot of you know a lot of people came there and and Donated or you know they had hamburger Buffalo burgers hamburger is whatever you know other food and It was a fundraiser for them They had a DJ or music there sometimes or a dance or people a lot of people went there Oh, it's all it's all functioned around walleye fish in here on the woofer The unique the new it's a unique area to fish Granted you can catch fish anywhere almost As they move this way or that way you ain't getting to catch them all but lucky to catch some but like right now we're doing this is the rain ain't bothering us, but it's the different temperatures of the water and and the weather effects fish or see I know you aren't gonna they're gonna bite every day or All the time either if they did you everybody catch them all and there won't be any laugh And that's why they have restrictions on Limits like years ago used to catch five now they have three but because of Increase fish and pressure so many people fishing And there's all ages of people it's good that Parents take their kids and get them involved with something Besides sitting on their telephone What this my shag no mine, it's mine Like you say I'm going up to the raft or I'm going up to the shack or the raft And over the years I you know I probably had Probably four of them and I adjusted The sizes and Made it easier to take and put them in with this pontoon compared to a regular pipe frame one or whatever and but you know Someone would use plastic barrels or foam insulate foam they had floaters and different things like that You move them by I use my other boat and a motor and tie up to it and I Push it wherever I want to go By having a pontoon trailer. I just Back under it and crank it up when I take it to put it in or oh, so it's a lot easier It's like all the fishermen got off the river There's a rating other day and when I was snowing and blowing there wasn't anybody fishing Like they were catching fish. That's like some you know, it's raining. It was gonna sit. Who's gonna sit in a boat and fish When it's cold out all these other couple other guys went fishing. They're just went down to their rafts We can take a break and go inside it wrong Yeah So I would wind up and check to make sure you don't have a leaf on there Like before it was kind of cold it didn't refresh the world I came down and had We had two inches of rain and then the boat they come down pull the boat out and empty that And Whether I looked at the weather, you know This afternoon it was nothing in it like now. It's supposed to keep on raining Right, you know was all night. Oh The other thing was Here was you know the weather for the week was So so so and then you know a couple nice days But I Mean Sunday at 52. Well that warm with that warm up fast. Yeah, yeah, right You know biggest thing is when the Sun comes out then harder or warm up and It'll warm up to probably two degrees where it's a Sun though And it might walk more if it's windy out same time Yeah, and the Sun shining thing is say water is going across the marsh somewhere it's a marshes shallower and The Sun reflects off the dark bottom warms up the water more same way dirty water warms up faster and clear water because Light has effect on it Oh Like their Sunday 50 what's the thing? The thing that affects Fishin is the weather But we're I'm saying some fish are the marshes are ready The eggs in the fish aren't ready to spawn because They aren't ripe enough The fish going on eggs right Okay You know About fish eggs like we have these hadries and We know this they catch some fish with nets and Take them some places want them all and take this one and they take the milk from the males anyway when they Put the eggs in a spawning We got them in this morning there, but after all before when they take them out of the fish They put them in a like a Small you put the eggs in there put the milk in there There's a hole in the egg and They call it water water hardening the Male sperm has to go through this hole in the egg within a minute because the water makes the egg Close the hole so it happens fast So that it gets fertilized and then they put them in spawning first you run current water through it and It's oxygenated And then you know weak the two weeks they've hatched and the fire come on and it has a little belly sack on it makes it float and probably bounces up and down and in a marsh it would float The current would flush them into the river system defeat off the sack for a while and then they started eating Zulu clankton Oh Organic phone, you know through the system and they float back to the lake Yeah, we got to see the process last year down by West Bend a big sinner on one of the other officials Yeah, they you know, they put them in that garden. I don't know what Mike there. Yep, Mike Tom and How they Put fish in half these different lakes, you know Well, that helps wherever they want them. They don't have have them They have different, you know different chapters who will see Oh When some of them nights We want the water to their heads pointing up river and the thing about it while I is as his eyes are on somewhat on the top of his head he's looking up and It's better to fish higher than the lower Because they the fish might go by as I got some kinkles other about a couple down there is We got different amounts of line use short cold long cold short cold long cold. So either Fish in different areas and fish in different depths and I got my sinker guy. They make my own sinkers is you can There's been a lot of these different types of clubs and some of them Well, they got different those on the wiggle water or rattle stuff like that according to the height of water and Current makes lures wiggle more less soon stuff like that for you by different reasons He's like that So is it the males that bite more on the way natural things that tell you what's happening is In the spring almost you get a whole bunch of flock. There's granted in a box value because it's so much water is There's Gee, there's geese around but almost you see a bunch of geese fly in north in the spring and that's when I mean flock after flock after flock after flock And that's when the wall is up up river and all of a sudden you might wait Go after the wall ice pond is almost you get another bunch of more geese to be flying up north and You know flock up the flock when it's warmer as well as they're going back down there the other natural thing is You haven't seen a frog yet when the water gets warm The frogs come out of hibernation The frogs are croaking and that's you can you know like a marshy. There's some female Wall ice didn't spawn yet. So they hang around in the marsh. All those little females are all gone Then the males hang in there. They might be in fox frogs or minerals and they'll come out but The main run is it seemed like after the sturgeon spawn And the sturgeon spawn of 52 to 55 degrees. There's that first one down. I'll eat it You It's really crappy out there. Yeah, it just came down. It's too bad. So I want to we know where it is But I don't like it a drone shot of this thing, too Yeah You guys want to pop I got a Pepsi or something do it. I'm good. I'm good for it. Thanks. Thank you. Yeah Appreciate And While ago When I talk a lot I get worse. I don't know why and Never did but it's not from talking too much. I don't know if I had I haven't had COVID or nothing but I asked my brother to doctor what walked up In my house, you know, the air so dry that it could be affecting you know that and I I don't know When I'm sleeping too, I might I might be breathing through my mouth more Very knows They wake up and they get kind of like a drive. Oh, I don't know if I snore You know over the years, you know, I learned Oh to make you know how to make the breathing work Fish fishing down about course and then I get you know Use a short pole. That's like my poles. I got them all I'm showing you one here in the final window I There's like the odds are slim. We're gonna get a fish today. Yeah snap It's got 12 feet of line on Like this other one It's got 10 feet of line on and that sets all deep when fishing but It's like See that I have some other pole. They're 20 feet long I have a long pole and then a short pole. I fish like this you know, or shorter Let's say they're four feet down or six feet. It's like if I got eight feet of line on it and from here They hang down. There's about two feet a line out of the water Roughly and it goes down on the angle so That means I got six feet out You know an eight and an eight quarter. That means I got six feet off Line in the water And goes down an angle. I might only be fishing four feet deep It doesn't mean I'm a fishing eight feet. I'm fishing. I'm on a 45 degree angle There especially the current taking up. Yeah, yeah, right and Some of these guys To find out where the fish are going by we give you a rough idea. They take a cane pole And I got something too they put a Swivel on it And say they got The swivel down at eight feet another one at 10 and another 12 different projects that work done. So I So a Easter is this going to be crowded out here still? They're big probably busy Because everybody's got off from work and the kids they're off. Yeah, I think I don't know they're too happy maybe there's something Yeah I don't know how many fish they'll catch but They know they could catch quite a few Are you gonna be out on Easter? Yeah, well, I'll be out here every day probably And I might be Probably within a week I'll move by the hose along Here are some guys might be catching a spawn of fish Everybody will be able to I Think that one was some temple them bio and kind of a political thing No One time to all the other fish go to the reefs like we're doing it one and It was to take a dump truck out there and then dump we got a hole and they back up and dumped them up rock him And then one day What's going out there years ago and A space crack when Trump went through and the guy was in a truck and drove Very quick These are the halts and rocks out on some sleds. We dumped them in half of that but then we kind of could do it And some of the reefs a couple of reefs are a mile long that they put all the rocks in And that's where already died. They did saugard. They helped saugard was they died them, you know Almost they caught a bunch of you know, D and her take 10 saugars and kill them and you know look at her microscope like We took some hatcheries and we died them, you know, but the finding guard is almost like hats They go and put them runs in a little dump like dump incident get bought the running in and out and Many in their head was almost about 80% of them were the ones we hatched so they knew the reefs were working so I mean Then they died some other ones, but yeah And then after a while they watched because they took some more and then almost there's More and more of the fish were gonna have a what we've been dying of more and more fish Didn't have any die in them so it's more natural reproduction so all we can hope is in the long run We were we told them what for and knew what's reading and that's some money So that is I have Yeah, it's for growing long isn't it? It's a quite cool they go on a quite cool and I thought Actually this one It was Okay Logging and This thing Sure is over 100 years old You know, I don't know what I think I got it from my dad And uh, I don't know where he's gonna have a problem So I'm logging here. I just have it here when logs go by Logs go by uh, you know, I've done a on the raft or a chunk size Push it open somewhere. I'm sure the thing is 100 years old or probably more Yeah, they're eating pretty good I This is We got what we can get. Yeah, it's pretty cool stuff. I think the next step is better. Yeah I Know obviously we'll get like some I could get some different shots in this thing, but I don't know how we get this really sunny when we do that Yeah, you know fine getting a shot of colleagues going by us. Well, I think we can always reference it. He's out there. Yeah, sure. Yep. Yep. Cool. Yeah Yeah No, it's there's something kind of meditative almost about this little thing. Yeah It's in there. Yeah, then put your eyes back out there That's it's a lot like ice fish. Yep. It's that is that 100% But this is I think even more compelling for someone isn't a fish moist that versus ice fish. I don't know. Okay Just ice fish is too cold or There's something about the water being open. Oh, I think that More of a mystery. Yeah, it's like Fish are out there so much. We're obviously there's some more on it under the ice too, but it's just like well, I think the river is different Because it's always different fish. Right. It's like the fish that are right here. Yep Yeah No, it's pretty interesting. Yeah, seeing all of Wisconsin's fishing culture. Pretty cool Yeah Ron Gropos took care of all this sturgeon because like Mike Blakely and Bego has the most sturgeon in Most populated Go on a sturgeon and make my video And It's being our guys trying to get their name. They probably know who I am Oh Oh You get out and start walking because we got it You You You You
