WEBVTT

00:00.000 --> 00:08.160
And this will be edited and all that fancy stuff, and then anything you can't answer.

00:08.160 --> 00:09.960
You can just move on from it.

00:09.960 --> 00:17.280
So thank you so much for this interview today on behalf of PBS Wisconsin and also ICT Indian

00:17.280 --> 00:18.280
Country Today.

00:18.280 --> 00:24.840
All of my stories are also shared with Indian Country Today, who has the biggest news platform

00:24.840 --> 00:27.200
for indigenous news here in the US.

00:27.200 --> 00:29.000
So thank you.

00:29.000 --> 00:36.200
To start, for our records, can I have you slowly say and spell your first and last name?

00:36.200 --> 00:46.120
First name is Jason, J-A-S-O-N, last name is Schlender, S-C-H-L-E-N-D-E-R.

00:46.120 --> 00:51.400
And also for our records, can I have you confirm your tribal affiliation?

00:51.400 --> 00:56.400
Yeah, I'm an enrolled citizen of the LeCudre Band of Ojibwe.

00:56.400 --> 00:58.400
Okay, great.

00:58.400 --> 00:59.400
Thank you.

00:59.400 --> 01:03.040
And your full title in this job, in this role.

01:03.040 --> 01:08.240
Currently, I am the executive administrator of the Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife

01:08.240 --> 01:09.240
Commission.

01:09.240 --> 01:10.240
Okay, great.

01:10.240 --> 01:11.240
Thank you.

01:11.240 --> 01:16.320
So we'll start with the gas leak first, but just in a broad sense.

01:16.320 --> 01:21.600
Can you tell me about the overall work that this organization does?

01:21.960 --> 01:28.400
Yeah, so Glyphic has been where it was formed in 1984.

01:28.400 --> 01:34.880
And our role is to assist the tribes in implementing their treaty rights.

01:34.880 --> 01:44.600
Treaties that were signed by tribes with the United States, going back to the mid-1800s.

01:44.600 --> 01:55.520
In addition to that, we provide expertise and knowledge on specific areas, enforcement,

01:55.520 --> 02:03.400
biological services, intergovernmental affairs, public information, and planning and development.

02:03.400 --> 02:13.120
So those areas are there to, those resources are available to assist our member tribes.

02:13.120 --> 02:20.320
And so we operate based on the delegated authority of those, delegated sovereign authority

02:20.320 --> 02:24.080
of those tribes.

02:24.080 --> 02:34.000
In regards to Enbridge and the gas leak that's affecting the nearby Bad River community,

02:34.000 --> 02:41.960
tell me about really some of the work and the early conversations with just the talk

02:42.040 --> 02:45.040
of having this pipeline here.

02:45.040 --> 02:53.240
Well, the pipeline has been around for a long time, and so we support Bad River in their

02:53.240 --> 03:07.360
effort to, in their personal fight to not have Line 5 go through their boundaries.

03:07.360 --> 03:15.320
So they have, they're currently in litigation with that, are about that.

03:15.320 --> 03:18.560
And there's been this, now this reroute.

03:18.560 --> 03:26.080
And so it goes around the reservation, boundaries, but still it kind of goes through the watershed.

03:26.080 --> 03:36.200
So our role in that is that we have environmental specialists that monitor different areas of

03:36.200 --> 03:38.320
what we call the seated territory.

03:38.320 --> 03:48.600
So we do not function within the reservation boundaries that try specifically Bad River.

03:48.600 --> 03:54.800
You know, that's there exists within our own sovereign capacity.

03:54.800 --> 04:01.240
So we operate off the reserve, outside the reservation boundaries, and so we assist them

04:01.240 --> 04:14.920
in monitoring sites and areas that are of concern and have always been of value to

04:14.920 --> 04:15.920
the tribes.

04:15.920 --> 04:24.960
So that's environmental awareness and protection, habitat and ecosystems and things like that,

04:24.960 --> 04:28.160
being able to assess and monitor those things.

04:28.160 --> 04:35.720
Because ultimately it's, it's our role is to ensure that the resources which the tribes

04:35.720 --> 04:42.000
harvest is clean and sustainable.

04:42.000 --> 04:44.680
So that's our, that's our role.

04:44.680 --> 05:10.200
So the real quick, can you put your phone on airplane, you know, that's, that's my watch.

05:10.200 --> 05:18.320
I can just take it off.
