1 00:00:01:21 00:00:03:29 >> Drivers on Interstate 90/94 2 00:00:03:29 00:00:06:20 pass closely by Castle Rock, 3 00:00:06:20 00:00:07:23 just outside 4 00:00:07:23 00:00:09:01 the Village of Camp Douglas 5 00:00:09:01 00:00:11:09 in Juneau County. 6 00:00:11:09 00:00:13:10 Many people confuse Camp Douglas 7 00:00:13:10 00:00:14:20 with the National Guard 8 00:00:14:20 00:00:16:29 facilities right next door. 9 00:00:16:29 00:00:18:03 But the village began 10 00:00:18:03 00:00:19:26 as a lumber camp, named after 11 00:00:19:26 00:00:22:21 founder James Douglas. 12 00:00:22:21 00:00:24:24 >> My great grandfather 13 00:00:24:24 00:00:27:18 had a logging camp. 14 00:00:27:18 00:00:28:14 In those days, 15 00:00:28:14 00:00:32:11 the trains were fueled by wood, 16 00:00:32:11 00:00:35:01 not coal, not yet. 17 00:00:35:01 00:00:36:19 And he provided the fuel 18 00:00:36:19 00:00:37:29 and the water. 19 00:00:37:29 00:00:39:20 That's how Camp Douglas 20 00:00:39:20 00:00:42:03 really started. 21 00:00:42:03 00:00:43:09 >> One of the wood cutters, 22 00:00:43:09 00:00:44:21 John Singleton, soon married 23 00:00:44:21 00:00:46:20 Douglas' daughter, 24 00:00:46:20 00:00:48:16 Ann Eliza Douglas, 25 00:00:48:16 00:00:50:02 and decided to stay on 26 00:00:50:02 00:00:51:09 in the young settlement 27 00:00:51:09 00:00:53:23 of Camp Douglas. 28 00:00:53:23 00:00:55:23 A turning point came when 29 00:00:55:23 00:00:57:22 the Western Wisconsin Railway 30 00:00:57:22 00:00:58:28 decided to build 31 00:00:58:28 00:01:00:20 new tracks south, 32 00:01:00:20 00:01:03:05 across the Milwaukee Road Line. 33 00:01:03:05 00:01:05:07 >> The Milwaukee Road decided 34 00:01:05:07 00:01:06:11 they would not be allowed 35 00:01:06:11 00:01:08:10 to cross their tracks, 36 00:01:08:10 00:01:10:22 but the West Wisconsin 37 00:01:10:22 00:01:12:03 would solve that problem 38 00:01:12:03 00:01:14:08 by laying their track 39 00:01:14:08 00:01:16:15 in the middle of the night. 40 00:01:16:15 00:01:18:01 >> The crossing turned 41 00:01:18:01 00:01:19:15 Camp Douglas into a busy 42 00:01:19:15 00:01:21:28 railroad hub. 43 00:01:21:28 00:01:24:02 Business grew around the depot, 44 00:01:24:02 00:01:25:19 as they set about serving 45 00:01:25:19 00:01:27:07 the needs of passengers 46 00:01:27:07 00:01:29:12 and local farmers. 47 00:01:29:12 00:01:31:27 John Singleton ran a hotel 48 00:01:31:27 00:01:33:29 and a general store, 49 00:01:33:29 00:01:35:18 and did well enough to build 50 00:01:35:18 00:01:36:24 a beautiful home 51 00:01:36:24 00:01:39:22 at the foot of a bluff. 52 00:01:39:22 00:01:41:07 But a fire that began 53 00:01:41:07 00:01:43:22 in a saloon soon spread, 54 00:01:43:22 00:01:45:05 burning down Main Street, 55 00:01:45:05 00:01:46:14 the depot, 56 00:01:46:14 00:01:48:25 and much of the town. 57 00:01:48:25 00:01:50:28 In the midst of the crisis, 58 00:01:50:28 00:01:52:07 most business owners 59 00:01:52:07 00:01:54:09 remained optimistic, 60 00:01:54:09 00:01:55:19 and in a short time, 61 00:01:55:19 00:01:58:19 they rebuilt their town. 62 00:02:00:04 00:02:01:15 The Singleton Hotel, 63 00:02:01:15 00:02:03:06 rebuilt in brick, became a 64 00:02:03:06 00:02:05:19 landmark of the busy depot area. 65 00:02:05:19 00:02:08:05 Grocery and hardware stores, 66 00:02:08:05 00:02:10:06 a meat market, a blacksmith, 67 00:02:10:06 00:02:12:15 and barber shop, a feed store, 68 00:02:12:15 00:02:14:02 and a jewelry shop, 69 00:02:14:02 00:02:15:11 all added to the growing 70 00:02:15:11 00:02:18:25 foundation of the community. 71 00:02:18:25 00:02:20:08 Just to the north, 72 00:02:20:08 00:02:21:28 the Wisconsin National Guard 73 00:02:21:28 00:02:23:22 purchased a large piece of land 74 00:02:23:22 00:02:27:05 for a military reservation. 75 00:02:27:05 00:02:28:17 Here was enough space 76 00:02:28:17 00:02:30:10 to set up rifle ranges, 77 00:02:30:10 00:02:31:17 and to gather units 78 00:02:31:17 00:02:32:17 from around the state 79 00:02:32:17 00:02:34:19 to train together. 80 00:02:34:19 00:02:35:28 The reserve gave a boost 81 00:02:35:28 00:02:37:15 to the village, 82 00:02:37:15 00:02:38:24 which provided supplies. 83 00:02:38:24 00:02:40:02 While the soldiers, 84 00:02:40:02 00:02:41:10 who arrived at the depot 85 00:02:41:10 00:02:42:23 for their summer training, 86 00:02:42:23 00:02:45:23 patronized local businesses. 87 00:02:45:23 00:02:48:11 When the US entered World War I, 88 00:02:48:11 00:02:49:21 National Guard troops 89 00:02:49:21 00:02:51:07 were sent by the thousands to 90 00:02:51:07 00:02:53:04 assemble into what would become 91 00:02:53:04 00:02:55:24 the 32nd Division. 92 00:02:57:01 00:02:58:10 Many were followed 93 00:02:58:10 00:02:59:28 by their families, who arrived 94 00:02:59:28 00:03:01:04 at the Camp Douglas depot 95 00:03:01:04 00:03:03:17 to see them off. 96 00:03:03:17 00:03:05:27 After the war, the reserve 97 00:03:05:27 00:03:07:09 was officially named 98 00:03:07:09 00:03:09:02 Camp Williams, in honor 99 00:03:09:02 00:03:11:08 of Lt. Col. Charles Williams, 100 00:03:11:08 00:03:12:24 who led the development 101 00:03:12:24 00:03:14:24 of the camp. 102 00:03:14:24 00:03:16:00 Later, the Wisconsin 103 00:03:16:00 00:03:17:11 Air National Guard 104 00:03:17:11 00:03:19:07 would share the facility, 105 00:03:19:07 00:03:20:19 with the Air Guard portion 106 00:03:20:19 00:03:22:12 named Volk Field, 107 00:03:22:12 00:03:24:17 in memory of Lt. Jerome Volk, 108 00:03:24:17 00:03:26:09 whose plane was shot down 109 00:03:26:09 00:03:28:29 in the Korean War. 110 00:03:30:06 00:03:32:15 At the turn of the 20th century, 111 00:03:32:15 00:03:34:10 townspeople could pose 112 00:03:34:10 00:03:36:20 with pride on Main Street. 113 00:03:36:20 00:03:38:04 Camp Douglas could boast 114 00:03:38:04 00:03:40:15 of starting its own bank. 115 00:03:40:15 00:03:42:12 And in 1908, built its own 116 00:03:42:12 00:03:44:10 high school, which became 117 00:03:44:10 00:03:47:03 the pride of the community. 118 00:03:47:03 00:03:48:24 A farmers co-op 119 00:03:48:24 00:03:50:26 took over the feed store. 120 00:03:50:26 00:03:52:09 And Camp Douglas teamed up 121 00:03:52:09 00:03:53:17 with New Lisbon 122 00:03:53:17 00:03:55:00 to start one of several 123 00:03:55:00 00:03:57:19 area telephone companies. 124 00:03:57:19 00:04:00:04 In 1920, Camp Douglas built 125 00:04:00:04 00:04:01:17 the largest community hall 126 00:04:01:17 00:04:03:09 in the county, complete with 127 00:04:03:09 00:04:05:28 a gymnasium, and three churches 128 00:04:05:28 00:04:09:10 would minister to the village. 129 00:04:09:10 00:04:10:24 And, as the era of passenger 130 00:04:10:24 00:04:13:10 trains began to wind down, 131 00:04:13:10 00:04:14:17 the building 132 00:04:14:17 00:04:15:29 of Highway 12 and 16 133 00:04:15:29 00:04:17:05 brought new growth 134 00:04:17:05 00:04:20:02 on the edge of town. 135 00:04:20:02 00:04:22:00 But like all small villages, 136 00:04:22:00 00:04:23:27 Camp Douglas was hit hard 137 00:04:23:27 00:04:24:27 by the big trends 138 00:04:24:27 00:04:27:03 of the 20th century. 139 00:04:27:03 00:04:29:10 It would lose its bank 140 00:04:29:10 00:04:31:28 during the Great Depression. 141 00:04:31:28 00:04:33:25 The number of local farmers 142 00:04:33:25 00:04:35:26 would decline dramatically. 143 00:04:35:26 00:04:37:03 And many young people 144 00:04:37:03 00:04:38:17 would leave the area 145 00:04:38:17 00:04:41:15 to find work in bigger cities. 146 00:04:41:15 00:04:42:28 School consolidations 147 00:04:42:28 00:04:44:13 would eventually close down 148 00:04:44:13 00:04:46:25 the high school, and local shops 149 00:04:46:25 00:04:48:12 would go out of business, 150 00:04:48:12 00:04:49:18 unable to compete with 151 00:04:49:18 00:04:53:28 chain stores and shopping malls. 152 00:04:53:28 00:04:56:11 But in the early 1960s, plans 153 00:04:56:11 00:04:58:04 for a new Interstate Highway 154 00:04:58:04 00:05:00:24 System provided new hope. 155 00:05:00:24 00:05:02:19 >> We were really lucky, 156 00:05:02:19 00:05:04:01 due to the fact that 157 00:05:04:01 00:05:05:28 the military existed out here. 158 00:05:05:28 00:05:07:08 So when they put the freeway in, 159 00:05:07:08 00:05:08:17 they put an exit right here 160 00:05:08:17 00:05:09:27 at Camp Douglas, which benefited 161 00:05:09:27 00:05:11:20 the village of Camp Douglas, 162 00:05:11:20 00:05:12:24 as well as the military 163 00:05:12:24 00:05:15:09 installation. 164 00:05:15:09 00:05:17:25 >> Born as a transportation hub, 165 00:05:17:25 00:05:19:11 Camp Douglas continues 166 00:05:19:11 00:05:21:07 to remain connected, 167 00:05:21:07 00:05:22:28 and sustains village life 168 00:05:22:28 00:05:25:00 by continuing a long tradition 169 00:05:25:00 00:05:27:09 of community service. 170 00:05:27:09 00:05:29:05 >> I came to Camp Douglas 171 00:05:29:05 00:05:32:09 in 1959 and met the gentleman 172 00:05:32:09 00:05:33:29 who was running this place, 173 00:05:33:29 00:05:35:09 a little cafe, 174 00:05:35:09 00:05:37:13 called the Target Bluff Cafe. 175 00:05:37:13 00:05:39:03 It had two pumps out front, 176 00:05:39:03 00:05:40:17 Standard Oil gas pumps, 177 00:05:40:17 00:05:42:21 for 18 cents a gallon a gas. 178 00:05:42:21 00:05:43:28 My wife and I built 179 00:05:43:28 00:05:45:16 a little dining room on. 180 00:05:45:16 00:05:47:01 Later on, we added onto that 181 00:05:47:01 00:05:48:25 dining room, put a new front 182 00:05:48:25 00:05:50:11 on the building, and you have 183 00:05:50:11 00:05:53:00 a nice little supper club. 184 00:05:53:00 00:05:54:06 From day one, I was involved 185 00:05:54:06 00:05:55:23 in the Camp Douglas 186 00:05:55:23 00:05:57:09 Fire Department. 187 00:05:57:09 00:05:58:21 We had the first ambulance 188 00:05:58:21 00:06:00:11 in Juneau County. 189 00:06:00:11 00:06:03:12 We all had to learn to be EMTs. 190 00:06:03:12 00:06:04:19 In a small town, 191 00:06:04:19 00:06:06:01 everybody's got to pitch in 192 00:06:06:01 00:06:08:08 and get some work done. 193 00:06:08:08 00:06:09:07 At first, they say, 194 00:06:09:07 00:06:10:21 oh, another foreigner here. 195 00:06:10:21 00:06:11:28 Then when they found out 196 00:06:11:28 00:06:14:00 I was really fitting in 197 00:06:14:00 00:06:15:17 and chipping in and volunteering 198 00:06:15:17 00:06:17:18 for wherever I could help, 199 00:06:17:18 00:06:19:00 and work in the village 200 00:06:19:00 00:06:20:14 and the fire department, 201 00:06:20:14 00:06:21:21 and the ball park, 202 00:06:21:21 00:06:23:24 and the community hall. 203 00:06:23:24 00:06:25:19 I also belong to the 204 00:06:25:19 00:06:27:15 Camp Douglas Masonic Lodge, 205 00:06:27:15 00:06:29:03 and we raise money for the 206 00:06:29:03 00:06:29:28 grade schools, for the teachers 207 00:06:29:28 00:06:31:20 to support them, and then 208 00:06:31:20 00:06:34:25 we started a new Lions Club. 209 00:06:34:25 00:06:36:24 We're a busy volunteer group, 210 00:06:36:24 00:06:39:20 well everybody is busy. 211 00:06:39:20 00:06:41:21 I had the misfortune, 212 00:06:41:21 00:06:43:12 I had a plumber 213 00:06:43:12 00:06:44:21 that worked on the place 214 00:06:44:21 00:06:47:19 and accidentally set it on fire, 215 00:06:47:19 00:06:49:00 and the entire structure 216 00:06:49:00 00:06:50:25 went down in flames. 217 00:06:50:25 00:06:53:01 The community got together and 218 00:06:53:01 00:06:54:09 said hey, we've got to help Rolf 219 00:06:54:09 00:06:56:04 to get back on his feet. 220 00:06:56:04 00:06:58:07 They put a banquet together 221 00:06:58:07 00:06:59:19 in the community hall, 222 00:06:59:19 00:07:01:20 a fundraising dinner for me, 223 00:07:01:20 00:07:02:29 with the entire community 224 00:07:02:29 00:07:04:04 of Camp Douglas 225 00:07:04:04 00:07:07:17 and raised over $7,000. 226 00:07:07:17 00:07:09:15 Here, Rolf, I know it's a drop 227 00:07:09:15 00:07:12:05 in the bucket, but it will help. 228 00:07:12:05 00:07:13:22 The spirit behind it 229 00:07:13:22 00:07:15:10 was worth more than the $7,000, 230 00:07:15:10 00:07:17:19 almost, you know. 231 00:07:17:19 00:07:19:15 So yes, we got back on our feet 232 00:07:19:15 00:07:22:09 and we built a new one. 233 00:07:22:09 00:07:23:28 I was adopted into this village 234 00:07:23:28 00:07:28:04 like I was born here. 235 00:07:28:04 00:07:29:18 >> The spirit of community 236 00:07:29:18
